Durst started attacking the promoter on-stage at the Sydney show, who then took over the mic himself and asked people to calm down and move back. Durst arguing with him somehow did not encourage people to calm down and move back.

To be clear, I'm not defending Durst for any crimes, just pointing out that the Woodstock '99 comparison made by Breihan doesn't make sense.

But Travis Scott didn’t kill eight people. I would put that blame elsewhere.

No one lined people against a wall and "killed" them; there were various degrees of negligence involved. Hpefully the investigation and lawsuits will get at the specifics. Breihan wants to let Scott off the hook and place all the blame on the "promoters." I get the impulse of being wary about blaming an artist, but it doesn't seem to fit here.

That's a good point. At least at the Silverdome they opened the doors very early, like 3 in the afternoon. So anxiety levels weren't as high as they could have been.

Neadnerthal otm, I keep seeing people conflating cardiac arrest with heart attack, which aren't the same at all. Not saying you Halfway, but esp on Twitter I keep seeing people saying, "don't you think it's suspicious that so many people had heart attacks??? there is more to the story we haven't heard".

i'm just struggling w/ why so many people I know literally don't get the mechanics of a crowd surge. like I get not everybody was the concertgoer I was pre-pandemic but it's like the feeling of standing with your feet not being on ground, lurching in both directions in a sea of people and trying to stay upright, with zero body autonomy.

Oh yeah the social media discussion around this is absolutely deranged, on the level of middle-school rumors.

I mean, the posters and set design and the rest lean unabashedly into occult kitsch, so it’s fair enough that people take that seriously, in the way people would if someone died at an Ozzy concert in his prime.

Rode past the concert site last night on my way to work. Due to the investigation, they haven't yet taken down the stages or a good bit of the tents etc. It's quite eerie, particularly the main stage, which backs right up on the Main St. fence, and easily visible to anyone passing by.

Usually. You have to remember that this particular event was presented as being a kinda-sorta family friendly event, with amusement park rides and a carnival midway. I can imagine alot of tickets were gifted as birthday or early Christmas presents.

most festivals are all-ages, aren't they? unless we're talking like small-time punk festivals at one bar or something.

i can't think of any big festivals like this that are/would be 21+.

That’s interesting; I don’t remember seeing kids when I attended a fests back in the day, and they wouldn’t have seemed like an environment for children. Lots of drunk adults, rowdiness, etc. Not to put the blame on people who brought kids, I’m just surprised they were there.

(I’ve seen kids at seated stadium concerts, of course)

maybe they are different elsewhere in the world, but the big ones i've been to have all been kid-friendly, i think.

They removed Travis Scott as a Coachella headliner, but don't worry, Rage Against the Machine is still there, which means there will be plenty of chill music for the packed crowd to relax to.
