Feel like we've at least nailed it down to a small city in the US that had immigration from a Catholic country. (Having put all that down in black and white now it's probably all wrong!)

I had thought the correct guesser got to set the next challenge, but that's not the case?

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 11 November 2021 22:54 (two years ago) link

That used to be be they way it worked, but it seems many guessers don't jump in with a new one soon enough, or at all.

Yeah tbf cherry blossom's heroic efforts in starting my favourite thread and keeping it going ensure I'll cut their idiosyncrasies plenty of slack

Those Christmas pyramids are characteristically (but not exclusively) German fwiw.

Tim, Thursday, 11 November 2021 23:38 (two years ago) link

Definitely not throwing shade at cherry blossom, just that we are foundering without them lol. Hope they’re just busy.

A Pile of Ants (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 12 November 2021 00:32 (two years ago) link

Not sure what to make of the German origin of Christmas pyramids, as it doesn't jibe with what looks like Catholic clerical garb.

Zelda Zonk, Friday, 12 November 2021 00:59 (two years ago) link

the photo has already disappeared behind the fold in this ~8000-post thread. it's obviously stitched together from at least a few images

Dan S, Friday, 12 November 2021 01:10 (two years ago) link

There are Catholic Germans, right?

nickn, Friday, 12 November 2021 01:37 (two years ago) link

Yes but they’re in bavaria and I think they’re kind of under represented among German Americans.

Fair warning I’m like 80% certain that’s a US outlet and catholic vestments, but I could be completely wrong.

Wisconsin is filled with descendants of Catholic immigrants from Bavaria fwiw

It's flat, there's a pick up truck, I'm guessing somewhere midwest

nickn, Friday, 12 November 2021 05:43 (two years ago) link

the shade of blue is very characteristic of Ljubljana tho

assert (matttkkkk), Friday, 12 November 2021 08:01 (two years ago) link

There are lots of catholics in Germany outside Bavaria, especially in the west of the country, not that that makes much difference to the likelihood of this being a specifically German exhibit / museum.

Tim, Friday, 12 November 2021 08:09 (two years ago) link

I don't know why the image isn't showing. It was at first, maybe I deleted by mistake and it cached. I'll put it up again shortly

Small Railroad town in the US Midwest, but that’s all I got. And I’ve been to a lot of small town historical museums with a display like the first image.

A Pile of Ants (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 12 November 2021 16:25 (two years ago) link

looks a little more west (plains) than midwest tbh

I'm trying to understand what I'm looking at on the right, between the tree and our location?

StanM, Friday, 12 November 2021 18:06 (two years ago) link

some kind of old gas pump?

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 12 November 2021 18:10 (two years ago) link

feels like nebraska

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 12 November 2021 18:15 (two years ago) link

maybe kansas or one of the dakotas.

Linda and Jodie Rocco (map), Friday, 12 November 2021 18:16 (two years ago) link

Seems like many medium-sized midwestern towns have a historical museum with displays similar to the first pic.

o. nate, Friday, 12 November 2021 22:55 (two years ago) link

the picture's above the fold now so i can't verify without loading this insanely huge thread but iirc it sure looks similar to The American Historical Society of Germans From Russia in Lincoln, NE

2nd pic: there's a sign in the distance with a longish word on it but it's too small to read - other than that... No idea? Are all the buildings very low because they're near an airport?

StanM, Saturday, 13 November 2021 08:55 (two years ago) link

In the first pic I’m looking at the photo of a street scene that seems to be labelled “[-illegible-] music store Santa.” Next
To the music store on one side there is a sign that could say Taft’s and in the other one a sign that might say Kuhn.

There’s an old theatre in Lebanon,OR called Kuhn’s, but there was also a chain of “variety stores” called Kuhn’s that started in Columbia,TN that was a precursor to Big-K so this gets me nowhere.

I think it’s just a place where no building is taller than two stories except for the water tower.

we're on a road that's going up -> a bridge over something that ends in H ?

I don't know if this will point the right way but:

(Davenport, Iowa). Now to find the indoor place...

yay! nice one

StanM, Sunday, 14 November 2021 19:25 (two years ago) link

ngl, it has been an ambition of mine to get one of these one day!

kinder, Sunday, 14 November 2021 19:27 (two years ago) link

How did you find it? Are you familiar with Davenport?

nickn, Sunday, 14 November 2021 21:26 (two years ago) link

nope, I googled 11'8 bridge and it turns out there's a really famous one in North Carolina, but it's not the one in the picture.
Then I googled "overheight vehicle route" and found a Flickr picture of it! so I got lucky for sure.

kinder, Sunday, 14 November 2021 21:35 (two years ago) link

An unexpected route to it for sure. Surprised this one took so long!

Sladoled Umbrella (cherry blossom), Sunday, 14 November 2021 21:52 (two years ago) link

There are some places that I don't "get" because why would I want to even think about that place, and Davenport, IA, is one of them. What an absolute pit.

so the sign in the Santa/street/piano picture says "Gifts" - and it's "Schmitt ??? - ??? Santa" - meanwhile, the family pic is "German Family Christmas" and the three landscape/tower drawings aren't labeled.

This one was wild

a (waterface), Monday, 15 November 2021 18:07 (two years ago) link

how the hell did you end up in a place like this, cherry blossom? :-)

StanM, Monday, 15 November 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link

the costume looks more like Saint Nicholas though - who comes with gifts on December 6th here in Belgium and looks/sounds suspiciously like Santa Claus (Sint Nicholas -> Sint Nikolaas -> Sinterklaas / Santa Claus)

I think the vertical KUM might be EUM as port of RKO Orpheum (which is todays Adler)

Haha I was wrong about more or less everything so I am likely wrong about this too but I’m clinging on to this being Schmitts Music Store Santa.
