How did you find it? Are you familiar with Davenport?

nickn, Sunday, 14 November 2021 21:26 (two years ago) link

nope, I googled 11'8 bridge and it turns out there's a really famous one in North Carolina, but it's not the one in the picture.
Then I googled "overheight vehicle route" and found a Flickr picture of it! so I got lucky for sure.

kinder, Sunday, 14 November 2021 21:35 (two years ago) link

An unexpected route to it for sure. Surprised this one took so long!

There are some places that I don't "get" because why would I want to even think about that place, and Davenport, IA, is one of them. What an absolute pit.

well done though

so the sign in the Santa/street/piano picture says "Gifts" - and it's "Schmitt ??? - ??? Santa" - meanwhile, the family pic is "German Family Christmas" and the three landscape/tower drawings aren't labeled.

and it's a Santa costume, no famous pope/cardinal

Gifts, omg.

This one was wild

a (waterface), Monday, 15 November 2021 18:07 (two years ago) link

how the hell did you end up in a place like this, cherry blossom? :-)

StanM, Monday, 15 November 2021 18:08 (two years ago) link

the costume looks more like Saint Nicholas though - who comes with gifts on December 6th here in Belgium and looks/sounds suspiciously like Santa Claus (Sint Nicholas -> Sint Nikolaas -> Sinterklaas / Santa Claus)

I think the vertical KUM might be EUM as port of RKO Orpheum (which is todays Adler)

Haha I was wrong about more or less everything so I am likely wrong about this too but Iā€™m clinging on to this being Schmitts Music Store Santa.

in July 1913, relocated to 111-113 W. Third St. Schmidt Music Company continued in business in Davenport until 1964.

I was pretty sure that I read "Schmitt Music Store Santa" in that photo caption. I found a Schmitt Music store website with all of their store locations, which are all in the Midwest, and I checked many of them for a historical museum. But they have no current location in Davenport, IA, so I never looked there!

Ok since I guessed one not so long ago, here's today's:

Thinking Israel

Chicks and Ducks and Geese better scurry (Ste), Tuesday, 16 November 2021 12:52 (two years ago) link

All the cars are white. Feels like in Israel they wouldn't all be white, but then it is a small sample size. And it could be near an airport

Black and white striped poles

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 16 November 2021 13:44 (two years ago) link

yeah I was thinking that most of them are taxis perhaps. Airport or big hotel on the right.

Direction signs with blue background and white text: not Israel?

StanM, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 16:09 (two years ago) link

definitely Middle East though

Man is wearing a Kippah I think?

willem, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 16:38 (two years ago) link

I'm not finding blue traffic signs like that in Israel (or yellow buses) - maybe I'm not looking in the right spots

StanM, Tuesday, 16 November 2021 16:45 (two years ago) link

Thought it might be Tunis, but I did some wandering and didn't find many signs that were similar.

I'm a sovereign jizz citizen (the table is the table), Tuesday, 16 November 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

i think it's somewhere moister than that. getting pacific vibes, philippines maybe. can't find those traffic stripes though

I think I found some striped poles

All non-white cars are forbidden in Ashgabat (Turkmenistan) but I don't think this is it

StanM, Wednesday, 17 November 2021 08:25 (two years ago) link

Striped poles for both street signs and lights are very distinctive. Googling around I found striped poles in Kuwait. The blue sign with two indecipherable lines of text - wondering if this is arabic script on top and Roman script underneath

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 17 November 2021 08:52 (two years ago) link

The striped poles I found were in Haifa, near the airport but not had a chance to look properly

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Wednesday, 17 November 2021 09:08 (two years ago) link

I'm not 100% on that cap being a Kippah - could be a Taquiyah or Kufi too?

StanM, Wednesday, 17 November 2021 12:44 (two years ago) link

I see FAH too, and the word underneath looks like "depot."

nickn, Wednesday, 17 November 2021 17:28 (two years ago) link

The area immediately north of Tel Aviv airport is festooned with striped poles. Festooned!

That was a good one. I definitely got sidetracked by finding stripey poles in Israel. Haifa and Tel Aviv both felt too busy but they had the striped poles, but weirdly only in certain areas so I felt hmm maybe

Then I looked Jordan, Saudi, Oman and saw the traffic fines photo with the highway overhead and furniture store and it was pretty quick from there

One thing I learned is that Haifa and Tel Aviv both have a lot of tiny roundabouts, that are pretty well decorated

Nice one, was looking for a while like the middle east was a bit of a blind spot for the thread.

Initial thought: those bigger houses feel scandinavian - but it could just as easily be Scotland or something like the flatter parts of Austria, maybe? :-/

Can't quite make out what's on the road (bottom) - xxxT xxNAS ? (west/east something nas?)

Trying to see if the cars drive on the left or right but that three lane road is very confusing - looking at the arrows near the bottom of the pic all three lanes are coming our way, but a bit further away, between the trees, it looks like there's an arrow that splits into left/straight on for traffic coming from where we are - so which is it?

StanM, Monday, 22 November 2021 12:15 (two years ago) link

Looks like driving on the left to me, I can't see an arrow indicating the left lane is coming our way, only the one higher up. Can't make out the writing on the road on the right hand lane beyond __Y ___S - any lanes? left turns? Might be a place name instead of an instruction.

namaste darkness my old friend (ledge), Monday, 22 November 2021 12:23 (two years ago) link

I think that's the UK, and it might be Lancaster?

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Monday, 22 November 2021 13:27 (two years ago) link

That could be a currys / pc world logo on the left edge in the middle - have looked at a few megastores with no joy though.

The roads and carparks all look very quiet!

namaste darkness my old friend (ledge), Monday, 22 November 2021 14:50 (two years ago) link

Might look silly in a bit but I'm pretty confident that is not the UK. First thought was Scandinavia
