it's certainly intriguing. there are a lot of very nice hillsides on the eastern side of Australia, I'm learning, but apartment buildings on them? Not so much. Or I keep missing them. But where, then?

Second view needed, or a bit more time with this one?

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Thursday, 9 December 2021 12:11 (two years ago) link

My gut says it's NZ and somewhere in the Hutt Valley but I can't get any more from the pic.

... can we get a hint instead of a second pic? :-)

StanM, Thursday, 9 December 2021 18:27 (two years ago) link

intriguing part 2

- nearer the equator than we initially thought, based on the very short shadows?
- ACIFIC
- those two houses straight ahead have very eastern influenced looking roofs
- guy on the right looks rather white/american?

... is it like some Western enclave/american military presence in an otherwise Asian country, maybe?

or Hawaii, even?

StanM, Friday, 10 December 2021 09:08 (two years ago) link

i clicked a street in Honolulu that looked very similar indeed. but I think the right-hand steering wheels suggest not?

kinder, Friday, 10 December 2021 10:06 (two years ago) link

(similar to first pic, I mean)

kinder, Friday, 10 December 2021 10:06 (two years ago) link

Father Christmas in summer suggests southern hemisphere

man I nearly thought I got it, north of Hobart, Tasmania, but the 4+ apartment buildings aren't there either

StanM, Friday, 10 December 2021 11:01 (two years ago) link

4+ storey

StanM, Friday, 10 December 2021 11:02 (two years ago) link

that kind of foliage would die within six months in Tassie

I was convinced it's Cairns but i couldn't find it, so now I'm not

I'm pretty sure it's Samoa

I have zero familiarity with the area, but from some streetview trawling I do think it looks a lot like Northern Queensland.

o. nate, Friday, 10 December 2021 22:51 (two years ago) link

I've pretty much eliminated Noosa/Noosaville and also Townsville. Wondering about Mackay. The hill/mountain in back of the first shot looks typical of the Glasshouse Mountains which run down the eastern seaboard, a series of heavily eroded volcanic plugs which look like old teeth from a distance. We are an old continent so pretty much all of the topography is worn to bits.

that's what it looks like to me tbh, but on a pacific island

my general-area guesses have literally all been wrong though, so maybe use it as a "not-there" guide lol

isn't the steering wheel on the wrong side for Samoa?

StanM, Saturday, 11 December 2021 01:29 (two years ago) link

where my cousin lived for several years, I'm considering a restraining order against the nefarious forces of ILX

Nice one!

StanM, Saturday, 11 December 2021 23:09 (two years ago) link

Wow!

StanM, Samoa uses RHD steering wheels, apparently— both types are legal, same as American Samoa.

I got it by googling "pacific restaurant queensland logo" and this was among the hits

Nice, there was a Pacific hotel in Cairns too, but the sign didnt look anything like that one.

For anyone curious about the original view, it was over here a few streets away on the other side of the city

it's not a city!

ignore the blue line (or something), Sunday, 12 December 2021 11:21 (two years ago) link

those multi storey apartment buildings have thrown me off - I've only looked at big cities because of those

StanM, Sunday, 12 December 2021 12:06 (two years ago) link

let's ask matttkkkk first - Matt? :-)

StanM, Monday, 13 December 2021 12:20 (two years ago) link

100% not Queensland

church spire, bridge with Roman arches, a row of similar looking houses... England? France?

StanM, Monday, 13 December 2021 12:32 (two years ago) link

Is it a city?

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 13 December 2021 12:33 (two years ago) link

Looks like England anyway

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 13 December 2021 12:33 (two years ago) link

It looks like South East London to me, maybe looking South(ish) from the big lump that is Forest Hill / Sydenham Hill towards Catford? Can't find the relevant basketball court and wouldn't have expected lewisham to aint things orange anyway so either its a non-municipal court (eg a school or something) or it's different borough or its a different place altogether

Tim, Monday, 13 December 2021 14:00 (two years ago) link

that (railroad?) bridge with all the arches seems like it could be a big deal I'd think?

StanM, Monday, 13 December 2021 15:43 (two years ago) link

Pretty standard for the UK I would say. The playground looks quite old, in my experience the ones in london (in the more affluent areas at least) are more up to date, less so as you go further north.

a (waterface), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:21 (two years ago) link

I couldnt see that viaduct on my phone, had to look at it on a bigger screen. But if you look at the list of 'railway bridges and viaducts in the UK' on wikipedia then right at the top there you'll find accrington. Didn't take long to locate the park in relation to the bridge

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:22 (two years ago) link

Well done - haven’t been there for years and I thought it was more red brick than I thought looks on the pic.

Tim, Monday, 13 December 2021 16:28 (two years ago) link

do we have a thread about one's personal definition of a city? I feel like this has been coming up a lot lately and it's kind of interesting to think about my own criteria

rob, Monday, 13 December 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link

Well done or something (!), would you have gone through the whole list?

big online yam retailer (ledge), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:37 (two years ago) link

Quite possibly not ledge, tho I did get a twinkle in my eye when I saw it, the picture having quite a northern town feel
