Thank you Matt! :-)

church spire, bridge with Roman arches, a row of similar looking houses... England? France?

StanM, Monday, 13 December 2021 12:32 (two years ago) link

Is it a city?

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 13 December 2021 12:33 (two years ago) link

Looks like England anyway

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 13 December 2021 12:33 (two years ago) link

It looks like South East London to me, maybe looking South(ish) from the big lump that is Forest Hill / Sydenham Hill towards Catford? Can't find the relevant basketball court and wouldn't have expected lewisham to aint things orange anyway so either its a non-municipal court (eg a school or something) or it's different borough or its a different place altogether

Tim, Monday, 13 December 2021 14:00 (two years ago) link

that (railroad?) bridge with all the arches seems like it could be a big deal I'd think?

StanM, Monday, 13 December 2021 15:43 (two years ago) link

Pretty standard for the UK I would say. The playground looks quite old, in my experience the ones in london (in the more affluent areas at least) are more up to date, less so as you go further north.

It's not a city but it is accrington

bravo!

I couldnt see that viaduct on my phone, had to look at it on a bigger screen. But if you look at the list of 'railway bridges and viaducts in the UK' on wikipedia then right at the top there you'll find accrington. Didn't take long to locate the park in relation to the bridge

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:22 (two years ago) link

Well done - haven’t been there for years and I thought it was more red brick than I thought looks on the pic.

Tim, Monday, 13 December 2021 16:28 (two years ago) link

do we have a thread about one's personal definition of a city? I feel like this has been coming up a lot lately and it's kind of interesting to think about my own criteria

rob, Monday, 13 December 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link

Well done or something (!), would you have gone through the whole list?

big online yam retailer (ledge), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:37 (two years ago) link

Quite possibly not ledge, tho I did get a twinkle in my eye when I saw it, the picture having quite a northern town feel

ignore the blue line (or something), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:53 (two years ago) link

nice!

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 13 December 2021 16:56 (two years ago) link

Good work, thought we were due an easier one (even though some really tough ones have fallen with very little resistance of late!)

ooh, nice one or something :-)

StanM, Monday, 13 December 2021 19:59 (two years ago) link

US surely

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:07 (two years ago) link

The concrete brutalist-lite blocks make me think this is either a college town or a state capitol. Midwest or Rust Belt, somewhere that was urban-renewed in the 70s?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:08 (two years ago) link

It's someplace with bleak enough weather that people wear parkas and carry an umbrella when it's that sunny outside....

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:09 (two years ago) link

English speaking based on the "keep clear at all times" sign. but the bicycle markings are puzzling me. can't decide if they mean it's a lhd country or a rhd country.

I've not seen drop curbs like that in the UK though, so I'm ruling that out.

koogs, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:13 (two years ago) link

"Keep clear at all times" just feels to me like a phrasing I see in the US

Guayaquil (eephus!), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:26 (two years ago) link

The white car in the distance seems to be driving on the right - assuming that's not a one-way street. Yes obviously a place with cold wet weather and of the six or seven people you can see, they're all white. Could it be some small city in Western US, Colorado or something

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:31 (two years ago) link

If anyone can identify the tree, that might suggest a general geographic location

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:35 (two years ago) link

Looks like a jacaranda at first glance, they are all over Brazil but also ... Australia

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:48 (two years ago) link

Wish I could figure out what sign has been removed from the wall - "Accident", "Acclaim" something something, looks to be in Helvetica or Unica or another humanist sans.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 04:57 (two years ago) link

Does look like a jacaranda. Doesn't look like Australia though, unless it's some windswept corner of Melbourne docklands or something - but I think squinting at the car in the distance, it's driving on the right.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 05:12 (two years ago) link

The sign might say "Adelaide" on further inspection. But that could be the Adelaide Hall or something like that.

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 05:13 (two years ago) link

The sign does look a bit like it might say Adelaide.

There's a red bike there that looks like it's a Vespa - not common in the US, I imagine, but I might be wrong.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 05:19 (two years ago) link

44 wakefield st, adelaide, sa

micah, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 06:36 (two years ago) link

xp
I was thinking jacaranda for the tree too, but they are common in SoCal. Could also be Canada, maybe?

nickn, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 06:46 (two years ago) link

lol, the address is right there above the bus stop about 10ft to the right of the picture.

the adelaide... seems to continue behind the tree, wonder what it says. and number 60 has some writing under the logo but it's too small to make out.

koogs, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 06:51 (two years ago) link

but, yeah, micah has mailed it

you never lived on wakefield st matt?

micah, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 08:14 (two years ago) link

Correct,

The text in the image says "Adelaide Police Station". Understandable that Matt only wanted to hint at knowing this, rather than revealing any direct experiential knowledge

assert (matttkkkk), Wednesday, 15 December 2021 09:24 (two years ago) link

there's another layer of palimpsest under the police sign, what looks like a roundel near the start of "station". it predates the earliest google picture though.

koogs, Wednesday, 15 December 2021 11:25 (two years ago) link

We were right that those trees are jacarandas.

just based on the temporary construction and the "TOGETHER" : a covid vaccination center somewhere? (the one here in Mechelen, Belgium had a big "HERE WE REGAIN OUR FREEDOM" motivational banner and the Pfizer plant in Puurs, BE has a "SCIENCE WILL WIN" banner btw) (but what are the round things on the wall? overhead pics of cappuccino?)

StanM, Friday, 17 December 2021 13:29 (two years ago) link

Yellow circles on the left look like they might have an eagle on them
The O of together has a castle in it?
Patio heater has an oval logo on the sticker, looks like US politics to me
The door is tied back with something printed, the right hand one maybe ends DAS or OAS
Logo above the stair rail looks like military or emergency services
