Worst ever festival line up?

Are we expecting lineups to somehow have a very specific theme? That can work, but I much prefer large, genre-spanning lineups. I know that can and has gone wrong and that ILM likely prefers the former.

morrisp are you familiar with the oeuvre of any dance-y cover act that plays at a local outdoor (non-music) festival? most have stepped up a bit but songs from all those artists could be done… by one band

or a cover band that plays at any suburban festival to be half-listened to with families milling around

mh, Thursday, 30 December 2021 05:04 (two years ago) link

I’ve also had the “beer tent at a state fair where every song is country or hip hop” experience so idk

mh, Thursday, 30 December 2021 05:06 (two years ago) link

Yeah a decent wedding band trying to please an audience aged 40-70 would almost certainly bring out some of that material, with Flock a sort of odd band out - maybe if the the groom had been a new wave dude in '85, they might add "Space Age Love Song" to the mix. Maybe not the full intro to "Modern Love Is Automatic" unless specifically requested.

its a funny lineup in the sense that back in their day all of those acts fans would have actively hated each other. but yeah, also its pretty much a direct lift from the playlists of many oldies stations in 2021 and millions of modern listeners wouldnt identify those acts as being different genres today, in the same way that they would classify frank sinatra, elvis, and the ronettes together.

I'm familiar w/the Jack FM principle, but I guess in my mind there's a difference btw "this playlist is so random!" and "I'm going to buy a ticket to stand in a room and watch each of these particular artists play multiple songs" (who even wants to hear Vanilla Ice play multiple songs?)

(...but for all I know, it's sold out, and you guys are totally OTM!)

Texas Medicine v. Railroad Gin (morrisp), Thursday, 30 December 2021 15:37 (two years ago) link

it’s an entire street experience, man

mh, Thursday, 30 December 2021 15:50 (two years ago) link

fwiw i believe "the fremont street experience" is a big open-air shed covering fremont st, so my guess is that this is a free show on an outdoor stage for the benefit of revelers at the surrounding bars. i agree that this show would be a more WTF concept as a ticketed indoor concert where the expectation is that ppl would want to watch each band one after another.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Thursday, 30 December 2021 16:04 (two years ago) link

Oh - if it's free, then sure, all bets are off (geddit?)

Texas Medicine v. Railroad Gin (morrisp), Thursday, 30 December 2021 16:08 (two years ago) link

it’s on the website noted on the flier, $50

they also have a package deal that includes airfare and a zipline ride

mh, Thursday, 30 December 2021 16:31 (two years ago) link

It depends on how far away you live

Mark G, Thursday, 30 December 2021 18:02 (two years ago) link

Airfare OR a zipline ride

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 30 December 2021 18:16 (two years ago) link

If you live close enough to get there by zipline, tix are half price

i grew up in vegas and the most surprising thing about that lineup is that it isn’t cover bands

Has Avril always been accepted in the emo community, or is this a new development?

Rockin’, and rollin’, and whatnot (morrisp), Tuesday, 18 January 2022 19:48 (two years ago) link

idk. She has a new album coming out called Love Sux.

peace, man, Tuesday, 18 January 2022 19:50 (two years ago) link

lol one of my friends shared this festival w/ me, but he was excited about it, and he is a big 3OH!3 fan among the other bands

Avril probably gets scene kudos for looking and sounding the exact same as she did when she first broke through. That's dedication.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 18 January 2022 19:51 (two years ago) link

ie she wasn't faking it after all!!

abcfsk, Tuesday, 18 January 2022 19:52 (two years ago) link

there's a return-to-form thing happening with the new avril stuff, it's also all produced by travis barker from blink

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 January 2022 19:55 (two years ago) link

who also did the machine gun kelly pop-punk record and the willow record and is maybe wholly responsible for the return of warped tour aesthetics to the charts

"Dance Gavin Dance" ???

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 January 2022 20:59 (two years ago) link

should've gone with Dance Charles Dance

car seat headrest and wolf alice are comically out of place on that lineup

I share brad's initial opinion

Lol seeing this thread finally ties together the loose threads explaining about three different Twitter meltdowns I saw today, but couldn’t follow without the added context. There’s a handful of bands I wouldn’t mind seeing in a different context, but you could not pay me enough to see them together in a shitty festival in Vegas.

But I do admit to a certain level of enjoying the “real emo” purists losing their goddam minds over this.

feel like back in the day bright eyes wouldn’t be caught dead playing in that lineup, congrats to conor oberst for finally embracing his place in the mall emo canon

Trying to pick the least shitty band underneath the two headliners and ... really have my work cut out for me

Four Year Strong! Best known for their pivotal role in that "help me identify these album covers on this bedroom wall" thread.

I think it was ilxor latebloomer who said on twitter that this festival really highlights a mid-generational drift in millennials because if you're on the other side of a 2 - 3 year divide, a lot of this poster seems seems like kiddie world

mh, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 14:46 (two years ago) link

Isn't "When We Were Young" the name of one of the more emo Killers songs? Kind of ironic it's the name of this fest in their home town.

Anyway, aside from Paramore I don't think there's a single band here I'd pay more than $15 to see, let alone in 2022. Mostly giving me flashbacks to all the Victory promos I had to get rid of back in the day.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 14:53 (two years ago) link

re: least shitty.
la dispute, thursday, glassjaw, jimmy eat world, bright eyes, car seat headrest, and wolf alice all have albums i really like

how did Wolf Alice sneak in there?

mh, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 14:57 (two years ago) link

I'd pay a bucket of piss (not mine)

Barker also did "Survivor's Guilt:The Mixtape//" with KennyHoopla, who I hope has a long career in front of him.

already have seen in the past:
MCR (great, would see again if it was less than $40 in a non festival set, so never probably)
AFI (would see again if i had a time machine for their Black Sails era shows)
The Used (forgot who they opened for, they were awful)
Taking Back Sunday (pretty good, would probably see again in a small show)
Dashboard Confessional (lol no)
Alkaline Trio (saw them multiple times but feel like that's in the past for me)
Jimmy Eat World (saw them twice, would totally see them again)

haven't seen, would check out if forced to go to this thing:
Paramore
Thursday
Wolf Alice
Bright Eyes

((lol I accidentally almost type Wolf Eyes instead of Wolf Alice/Bright Eyes, which would be an inspired addition))

xxp you get a much better chance of consistent weather in the spring/fall in the desert than about anywhere else

goldenvoice presumably has some long-standing deals for coachella, etc. and they feed off of LA's transportation hub. this looks like a live nation/las vegas thing, and vegas is pretty much a transportation hub in itself as far as entertainment goes. also, very easy to get everyone in/out when most of the area is just roads to and from the airport

all speculation on my part of course, etc

mh, Wednesday, 19 January 2022 15:14 (two years ago) link

Brad, in the future everything will be in the desert, so the concert-promotion industry is just doing its part to get us all acclimated.

Je suis mad max

Also I'm not a fan of these pure nostalgia fests. It's like the "Happy Together Tour" that my parents go to.
