en-dashes

En dashes go between numbers (working 9–5) and when you want to hyphenate a multi-word proper name to another word (those Sesame Street–watching punks). Em dashes are the long dashes that come up much more often—most often to separate parts of a sentence.

"En" and "em" are typographical widths—the width of a lowercase n and a lowercase m. I believe that in typewriter (monospace) fonts you are supposed to put a space around the double hyphen that indicates the em dash -- as is usually done around here.

I love the em dash, but back when I was a copy editor I would practically orgasm at the opportunity to put an en dash where it belonged.

Casuistry the practical orgasmer (Chris Piuma), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I should use HTML for these things when I'm just typing along?? Crazy. No. I'll stick to double hyphens, even though they're a typographical embarrassment.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 13:42 (seventeen years ago) link

Nah, they just harken back to the days when your averages Janes and Joes used typewriters and didn't have to care diddly squat about en or em dashes or ellipses or any of that printing stuff.

You're being hip and retro!

And Chicago-K3nt College of Law, which you oughtta know Amander, since they are affiliated with a certain higher learning institution at which you teach wee, precious ragamuffins born in 1988 the finer points of composition.

The head of their labor and employe department wrote my public sector labor law book! They HAVE a labor and employment department! They have a Labor and Employment Law certificate, for Pete's sake! I had to nearly get kicked out of school for insubordination to get DP to offer your standard employment law class! And I still won't know if my efforts were successful until I see the schedule for next semester. BAH.

HELLO ILX I AM BITTER TODAY.

funny you should mention that, since i am reading essay after essay after essay about the changing notions of love and marriage.

i have learned that korean people have learned to "make the romantic love happen" in today's society, among other things.

xp - oops. i'm new there and didn't receive a thorough orientation, but NOW I KNOW! bad bad bad bad bad teacher.

Dear ILX Fashion Advisors:

Hey, can I start wearing tights now or is it too soon? It's 62 and raining and gray outside. The tights I would wear are purple.

Love,

I've been told that " when the society itself is ready to understand how people behave, they will automatically start their love."

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:02 (seventeen years ago) link

I believe a friend of mine refers to #3 as "just get[ting] on with it" and attributes his readiness to do so to his working-class upbringing. Synonyms include "think less" and "it's not about you -- really".

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Jenny: Is it tights time already? I strongly dislike them, but I think in the rain you can do whatever you want. Especially if what you want is purple.

Manders: I have no idea what that means, but I would like to automatically start my love. Or even automatically.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:05 (seventeen years ago) link

I would say yes. Monday was the first time I've worn a jacket this season, so it's about that time.

I had completely forgotten what jackets I own. I looked for my leather jacket, but remembered that I threw it out last year after the cats peed on it (and then peed on it again). But then, then I found my Michael Jackson jacket! It's sort of a dark purple with stripes down the sleeves and no collar, and I had forgotten all about it. It was like Christmas, or at least what I imagine Christmas to be like.

Perhaps this will clear it up, L: Poor people are more free from marriage since their relative care less about him.

Thanks, Korean Gary, for my new myspace profile headline.

xpost to Jordan - Pumpkin Spice Latte time is also upon us! Also, I think I decided on pants because I am in class until 9 pm and that's a long time in tights. Also, Laurel, you strongly dislike tights??? Does not compute.

ALSO something is c-r-a-z-y crazy with Jeff's keyboard so that when I press shift-home, it turns the volume up and shift-end turns it down and shift-up arrow opens the DVD drawer and shift-down arrow closes it and it..............................

Party Time Country Female (pullapartgirl), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Fortunately, I was already going to hell anyway for making the romantic love happen before marriage, so whatevs.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:12 (seventeen years ago) link

Maybe Korea is the only place where romantic love still happens.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:13 (seventeen years ago) link

I will mention that the Koreans were the only ones to ask me whether romantic love needs to be between a man and a woman or not. They seemed pleased with my answer...

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:14 (seventeen years ago) link

Oh, I like tights just fine on other people, I just dislike having squeezy things around my waist and tights are offender #1.

XP: what was your answer? Do tell.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:15 (seventeen years ago) link

what was your answer?
Of course it doesn't have to be only between a man and a woman. Men fall in love with men and women with women, duh.

The Milkmaid (82375538-A) (The Milkmaid), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Amanda, you could easily turn those essays into an art film. You have connections!

I don't like people today, beginning with one coworker who said, "Let's make it a rule that for now on, the first person in the office has to make the coffee." She knows that person is me. Never mind that I rarely drink office coffee.

So, I went to the chiropractor/physical therapist yesterday. It was interesting. I felt better afterwards, and I'm going back tomorrow. HOWEVER, I don't want to make this a habit. Even with insurance, at $25 a pop and two visits a week this week and next (and then once every two weeks after that), these visits add up!

"Let's make it a rule that from now on, the last person in the office has to give the first person in the office $20."

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Sarah, it's official: I hate your co-workers.

Laurel (Laurel), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha ha

I don't like people today...
You guys don't count as people, so don't feel offended! Also, don't feel offended that you don't count as people or that I called you 'guys'!

As for tights, I have been on the lookout myself as I am a tights enthusiast. I collected so many pairs of tights last year, that I still have at least one unopened pair! Anyway, so far I have spotted two different women wearing tights. There were more, but I decided to only count people who were close to my age (ie: not 80) and not completely crazy. I made the mental decision to wait until October starts.

Queen Sarah Saturday (coco), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Speaking of romantic love, I'm kind of fascinated by this co-worker of mine. She's pretty religious -- she and her fiance owned a house together before getting married, but not only did they not DO IT, he would go back to his apartment at 9 pm and not sleep over. Now she's doing all these things for the first time and it's all very twee (for ex., they set their alarm 45 min early in the morning for "cuddle time"!!!).

It's very easy to make fun of, but I have to admit that it seems to be working for them. I'd love to know what their relationship will be like in 5 years.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

When I was going to the chiro it was only, like, $12/visit (after insurance) and after the first two weeks it was only once a week, and I felt like it was horribly decadent. But for the only time in my adult life I was free from my constant low-level upper back pain!

Oh I miss those days.

Casuistry (Chris P), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 14:22 (seventeen years ago) link

Yeah, the thing is that my back feels pretty fucking good today.
