Russell Westbrook said he felt discomfort in his back against Milwaukee, and adds that part of the issue is that he's not accustomed "to sitting down for long stretches".

#Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff said that Jarrett Allen was unable to pause Pokemon Legends: Arceus so that’s what led to a quick conversation about him being named to the All-Star team.

Allen seemed to appreciate the message and went back to playing.

why are so many retired players complete dumbasses?

Tracy McGrady says Giannis Antetokounmpo would’ve ‘struggled’ in his era

“If you can’t shoot, it’s gonna be hard. And Giannis’ game is predicated on coming downhill. ... It would have been tough for him to be who he is today, back then.” https://t.co/RCaMfyd5eu

obvs theyre all super competitive guys and whatnot but it would be refreshing to see one of them admit that players are just flat out better now

i think iverson has been generous with his praise. cant really think of too many others...

Spottie, Thursday, 17 February 2022 21:47 (two years ago) link

It's just so obvious that anyone decent in today's NBA would be elite at any point >20 yrs ago or so

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Thursday, 17 February 2022 21:57 (two years ago) link

iverson seems like the platonic ideal for what a retired baller should be: high as fuck, riding his positivity, rich, getting fat and mostly happy

there's a steve kerr interview on this subject that I've always enjoyed

symsymsym, Thursday, 17 February 2022 22:13 (two years ago) link

“They’re all right. They would all kill us. The game gets worse as time goes on,” Kerr joked, according to the Bay Area News Group’s Jimmy Durkin. “Players are less talented than they used to be. The guys in the ‘50s would’ve destroyed everybody. It’s weird how human evolution goes in reverse in sports. Players get weaker, smaller, less skilled. I don’t know. I can’t explain it.”

seems like they could just ask, say, lebron or Chris Paul, guys who played in both eras

Clay, Thursday, 17 February 2022 23:39 (two years ago) link

the thing that stands out to me when i watch old games is the lack of movement by help defenders. theres so much more switching and help/recover work by off ball defenders these days. i think a lot of the old pros would really struggle with the complexity and activity of todays defenses

micah, Friday, 18 February 2022 04:57 (two years ago) link

yup. defenses today are way more active now that they can't just bang bodies and grab like in the 90s. the accuracy of long range shooters has spread the floor and transformed the game majorly.

the extra reward of three-point shots may have 'created' the modern day deadly long range shooters, but if their same level of skills had existed in the two-points-only era defenders would still have had to come out and challenge their shots, spreading defenses in ways they never had to cope with back then. plus the game today is faster than ever.

When he retires (though given the arrangement I have no idea why he ever would), I want to see a deep investigative 30 for 30 on why the Heat have dedicated a roster spot to Udonis Haslem for all this time. We are now going on 7 YEARS since he was a rotation player, and more since he was a better than replacement NBA player. It’s not like they don’t know there is such a thing as assistant coaches!
