The mapping of controls for the Switch N64 emulator really messes with me. Kinda wish I'd gotten one of those overpriced Switch N64 controllers while they were still available.

aegis philbin (crüt), Friday, 25 February 2022 15:53 (two years ago) link

there's gotta be an 8bitdo or something clone controller out there

Nhex, Sunday, 27 February 2022 00:31 (two years ago) link

i used to use a saitek p990 for n64 emulation but thats an ancient one, i dunno what the current equivalent would be. presumably someone still makes a 6 face button gamepad though?

ciderpress, Sunday, 27 February 2022 01:35 (two years ago) link

the retrobit tribute64 is pretty good, don't know if it works on a switch though. also there's the brawler64 which looks nice

diamonddeva85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 3 March 2022 04:08 (two years ago) link

what i really want is one of those overpriced switch n64 controllers though

diamonddeva85 (diamonddave85), Thursday, 3 March 2022 04:11 (two years ago) link

the actual n64 controller form factor is awful sorry. i will never use it unless i'm playing on a real n64

ciderpress, Thursday, 3 March 2022 04:38 (two years ago) link

I was finding Occarina impossible on this Switch Online version, does the patch do anything to fix it? I couldnt work out what buttons did what.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 3 March 2022 05:46 (two years ago) link

Oh and it also looked janky. I'm sure the 3DS versh didnt look that bad but it prob doesnt help I'm trying to play a 30 year old game on a gigantic 4K tv LOL

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 3 March 2022 05:46 (two years ago) link

the n64 is the worst major console controller i've ever touched, it's horrible

the world's undisputed #1 fan of 'Spud Infinity' (Karl Malone), Thursday, 3 March 2022 15:49 (two years ago) link

it's definitely bizarre, especially since it followed the SNES controller which was fantastic

aegis philbin (crüt), Thursday, 3 March 2022 15:52 (two years ago) link

maybe just a terrible throwback to '80s-style arcade/controller design, maybe they just wanted it to look really different from Playstation

Nhex, Thursday, 3 March 2022 16:01 (two years ago) link

the entire left third of the controller being a red herring is so bizarre

ciderpress, Thursday, 3 March 2022 16:42 (two years ago) link

i guess mischief makers used it. one game out of hundreds

ciderpress, Thursday, 3 March 2022 16:42 (two years ago) link

my terrible secret is that i always used the left third and left the middle one untouched. i don't even know how i played goldeneye.

the world's undisputed #1 fan of 'Spud Infinity' (Karl Malone), Thursday, 3 March 2022 16:45 (two years ago) link

I am guessing Nintendo thought having the thumb point directly towards the screen was important. It wasn't.

adam t. (abanana), Thursday, 3 March 2022 16:53 (two years ago) link

iirc they designed it to be used with multiple layouts/grips, youre not supposed to use it all at once its basically two controllers in one, tho actual use didnt really pan out that way, but you gotta give them a break triggers analog sticks all that stuff was new no one knew what a controller for 3d games was supposed to be like, it was innovation baby, then other systems refined it

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 March 2022 17:51 (two years ago) link

did the NES dogbone come out before the SNES asymmetric dogbone?

Bixby in a Samsung I know it's Siri-esque (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 3 March 2022 18:27 (two years ago) link

I believe not, the NES dogbone came with the redesigned NES toploader which came out after the SNES launched
I always forget that the PS1 originally came without analog sticks on the controller

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 3 March 2022 18:44 (two years ago) link

xp i mean, fair enough, they were trying something new, but the original Dualshock came out the next year...

Nhex, Thursday, 3 March 2022 19:23 (two years ago) link

yeah they took the good stuff threw out the bad stuff and added some more good stuff and video game controllers basically reached their final form

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 March 2022 19:43 (two years ago) link

i dunno, I feel like Nintendo always comes up with crazy new controller concepts, that's their thing! Gamecube was wacky, Wii was crazy, etc.

Piven After Midnight (The Yellow Kid), Thursday, 3 March 2022 19:56 (two years ago) link

yeah nintendo continued to do wacky stuff but ps/xbox/etc has remained pretty much the same, i guess the addition of motion controls via the wii was the last big addition, and now the switch is basically a standard controller w a screen in the middle

lag∞n, Thursday, 3 March 2022 20:35 (two years ago) link

so far triangle strategy feels like 5% gameplay, 95% unnecessary exposition

aegis philbin (crüt), Saturday, 5 March 2022 15:13 (two years ago) link

I was hoping for ff tactics2. Not so much?

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 5 March 2022 15:27 (two years ago) link

triangle strategy

ciderpress, Saturday, 5 March 2022 15:52 (two years ago) link

strategy = talking to villagers
tactics = casting spells

lag∞n, Saturday, 5 March 2022 15:54 (two years ago) link

this! it would be called triangle tactics if it was a fft-like

ciderpress, Saturday, 5 March 2022 15:57 (two years ago) link

most of the reviews say its a good storygame but only an okay tactics game, which would make it more of a fire emblem-like

ciderpress, Saturday, 5 March 2022 16:04 (two years ago) link

oh god I finally got around to trying Slay The Spire and I can't stop playing plz 2 pry this thing from my hands

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 9 March 2022 00:41 (two years ago) link

salsa shark, Wednesday, 9 March 2022 08:50 (two years ago) link

please, just tie a piece of string around your feet so you can find your way back to the world after...after you're done...after it's done with you

the nintendo switch, when playing mobile, looks like a pair of wrist shackles. combined with a Skip-It, you are fun's prisoner.

pickle loaf (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 10 March 2022 18:22 (two years ago) link

if you think that's rough wait til you upgrade to monster train

^^^THIS. Slay the Spire rules but feels like a gateway drug in retrospect.

Just discovered Super Mario 3D World again. It's been on my Switch since the day it came out, only played once. It's fucken good!

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 12 March 2022 19:13 (two years ago) link

i just did a replay of it tho i never totally finished it i guess i didnt realize there was the crown world, anyway i am on the very last level champions road, very excellent game imho

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 19 March 2022 19:30 (two years ago) link

I played it a ton with my son on the Wii U - is there a reason to get Bowser's Fury? I'm not really clear on if it's the same game or not.

And yes, I agree it's excellent - maybe the best sidescrolling (sort of) Mario there is?

frogbs, Saturday, 19 March 2022 20:02 (two years ago) link

Ninja Hideaway mario kart is nuts

Michael Flatley's (Sufjan Grafton), Saturday, 19 March 2022 20:07 (two years ago) link

Bowser's Fury is like a 3D World DLC, it's very good. Apparently it takes about 4 hours to finish if you're a games journalist, so I'm guessing a couple weeks for a normal person.

Chuck_Tatum, Saturday, 19 March 2022 20:33 (two years ago) link

yeah its good but not full length, prob only worth buying if you want to play 3d world more

lag∞n, Saturday, 19 March 2022 20:37 (two years ago) link

Playing the Witcher 3 on Lite. Like having a steak dinner through a straw.

brisk money (lukas), Saturday, 19 March 2022 20:51 (two years ago) link

Ninja Hideaway is really the star of the first Mario Kart dlc batch. Having a bunch based on cities is a fun concept too though.

I forgot how punishing 150cc is in this game (for me anyway). I never did manage to find an ideal character/cart combo for that mode.

salsa shark, Sunday, 20 March 2022 18:46 (two years ago) link

ninja highway is fantastic

nxd, Sunday, 20 March 2022 20:33 (two years ago) link

I’ve been sucked into playing MarioKart Tour for the last couple years. It’s cool to see some of the tracks from there getting the full Switch treatment.

DJI, Monday, 21 March 2022 00:54 (two years ago) link

Was gonna say wasn't that track on the mobile version? That's cool

Nhex, Monday, 21 March 2022 13:01 (two years ago) link

I’m so used to 2 laps per race now I keep forgetting to keep racing for the third lap 😜
