I can’t imagine a worse combination for something disastrous than uninformed people + panicking + constant meaningless updates and yet Ukraine thread has gone the way of the covid threads, good work everyone.

i started getting the daily paper again a couple years ago and i gotta say, reading a whole bunch of news once a day is 10000x better for my mental & emotional health than paying attention to everything in the entire world all day long

OEO, yes, I think I personally was better off when "the news" meant the thump of the newspaper on my doorstep.

Nothing was really real until I read it in the paper. And things that happened after the paper went to press didn't reach me until the next day's doorstep-thump. Never watched TV news and probably never will

I can't say that this is an ethical position, and am not claiming any kind of moral superiority to consuming the news in that way. But given that I can't even begin to fix my own state, there's no way that my constant awareness of events will positively affect my nation or my world.

Hence, being updated constantly cannot plausibly be presented to me as an unalloyed moral good. The people of Ukraine (or Syria, or East Timor) are not aided in any way by my agony over their plight.

The risk isn’t really a future land grab, imo, it’s that any settlement along those lines would necessarily require Russia to exercise a measure of control over all future Ukrainian governments, either through some kind of electoral mechanism similar to Lebanon or Bosnia where power will, constitutionally, always be split between factions (with Russia controlling one of the factions) or through an overt threat of war any time a Ukrainian government did anything considered to be against the spirit of the negotiated peace. Neither of those things would lead to any form of domestic stability.

Zelenskiy needs a plausible peace he can sell domestically or Ukraine would have to move to something close to the Belarus model of no real democracy and enormous internal repression.

Not an assumption I’d feel safe making given that a) I’ve read your politics threads and b) the sheer amount of horror over thermobaric bombs. Which are not new and iirc were sold by the US to the Saudis to Yemen. Yet the direction of the mouthiest contributors to that thread is that it’s all basically a Marvel film and why not get your zings in against people who are in horror, idk!

There are plenty of other things that thread could be better used for such as:

a) Posting Reddit meme-standard content about Ukrainians doing sassy acts of defiance that subsequently turn out to be from six years ago or depicting a known Nazi oh uh hold up
b) posting threads from American Twitter users nobody has ever heard of dropping science about how Putin will have to imminently withdraw in the next week oh uh hold up
c) wildly veering from b) to imminent nuclear annihilation doomposting oh uh hold up
d) ShariVari posts - ok this one can stay

I posted on the thread itself that I keep seeing these breathless OMG posts on stuff I'd seen on the BBC news two days ago. Which makes me wonder what they're actually showing on the news in the US.

You see those posts because most people on the thread have no idea of commentary beyond speculation and yet still feel the need to keep on posting.
