I am very obviously biased because not only do I know the Manhattan DA from college but he also might be my distant cousin, but there was more to what happened to the case than just "the Manhattan DA didn't want to pursue it":
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/05/nyregion/trump-investigation-manhattan-da-alvin-bragg.html
Mr. Bragg was not the only one to question the strength of the case, the interviews show. Late last year, three career prosecutors in the district attorney’s office opted to leave the investigation, uncomfortable with the speed at which it was proceeding and with what they maintained were gaps in the evidence. The tension spilled into the new administration, with some career prosecutors raising concerns directly to the new district attorney’s team.Mr. Bragg, whose office is conducting the investigation along with lawyers working for New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, had not taken issue with Mr. Dunne and Mr. Pomerantz presenting evidence to the grand jury in his first days as district attorney. But as the weeks passed, he developed concerns about the challenge of showing Mr. Trump’s intent — a requirement for proving that he criminally falsified his business records — and about the risks of relying on the former president’s onetime fixer, Michael D. Cohen, as a key witness.

the risks of relying on the former president’s onetime fixer, Michael D. Cohen, as a key witness.
This is only a risk if you consider the possibility of **gasp** losing a high-profile case as a greater risk than than letting gross criminal misconduct, for which you have plentiful evidence, go unchallenged in court.
― more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 20:43 (two years ago) link
I think if you stopped to process what you were reading before acting like a sanctimonious prick, you would have realized that the assertion here is that proving gross criminal misconduct hinged largely on the testimony of one witness without solid corroborating evidence due to Trump's penchant for avoiding email communication
― castanuts (DJP), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 21:02 (two years ago) link
Yeah if it's not there and nobody flips, *shrug* -- seems like it IS there for Weisselberg, which is why he's hunkering down and taking the hit.
― Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 8 March 2022 21:08 (two years ago) link
Not disagreeing with your take DJP and I gave money to Bragg’s campaign after you posted about him originally, but there is definitely a difference between prosecutors willingness prosecute a drug case without overwhelming evidence and a white collar case without overwhelming evidence. In the latter, there has been a real aversion the last 10-15 years to even the possibility of losing a high profile case, which has not been helpful.
― removing bookmarks never felt so good (PBKR), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 21:16 (two years ago) link
so is this gonna be another thing where Trump gets off scot-free cuz he's so dumb you can't actually prove he was trying to break the law
― frogbs, Tuesday, 8 March 2022 21:27 (two years ago) link
basically yes

"challenged in court" and then not being convicted gives him a "See, I was proven innocent! The libs like to persecute me!" take.
― nickn, Tuesday, 8 March 2022 21:36 (two years ago) link
We've heard that from him hundreds of times already so I wouldn't really say *this* gives him that
― A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Tuesday, 8 March 2022 21:57 (two years ago) link
To his followers it would, "tried in court and found innocent" vs him just saying he's innocent.

Plane carrying Donald Trump made emergency landing after engine failure following GOP donor speech in New Orleans
So close!
― Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 March 2022 01:04 (two years ago) link
I'm torn because it would have been so great but 'engine failure plane crash into the ocean' is probably the most conspiracy theory ready way possible.
― joygoat, Thursday, 10 March 2022 14:33 (two years ago) link
There are probably conspiracies circulating at this moment that he has just survived another failed assassination attempt

Amazing detail is that the plane in question wasn't even Trump's big ol' Trumpy jet. That one has apparently been unused and in disrepair in a hangar for years. This was just a loaner.

I guess he did a new interview where he claims Putin "changed" and that he was "surprised" he invaded, which is a rare instance of Asshole (or someone) realizing he stepped in it and is now doing damage control. Of course the quote I saw still called Putin smart, because Asshole has no discipline and can never back down entirely, but taken in tandem with other news stories making the rounds about the ineffectiveness of his political endorsements, maybe it's just a further sign that his inexplicable swagger is shifting to a stagger. Fingers crossed, and that he follows it up by dying.
