how young is "very young"?

rob, Sunday, 13 March 2022 15:04 (two years ago) link

i genuinely do think that things people can't say directly to someone's face here probably aren't worth stating privately

This is going to sound mean, I'm aware, but I'm kind of surprised anyone could get to 21, let alone 42, and think that - it's just not how people operate, in my experience. I mean, the reason that there's an ILE is that ILM was founded first, but people won't stop discussing other things and each other.

Andrew Farrell, Sunday, 13 March 2022 15:08 (two years ago) link

I'd like an invite to the Slack. I've been here long enough.

One of my new year resolutions was to continually search for ever more novel reasons to feel shitty about myself about.

I'm not on it, but there's a 77 thread ("slack77") about it which might be the best way to ask?

rob, Sunday, 13 March 2022 15:15 (two years ago) link

Because that's perhaps what irks me most about it: if it's so public and open to any ilxor who wants to be on it, then why have some of us been kept in the dark about it?

xp Late teens (about the same age crut and lj were when they first started posting here) to late twenties.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Sunday, 13 March 2022 15:16 (two years ago) link

Thanks Rob.

For the record I'm with Alfred, I am fine with just posting here.

J0rdan S., donna rouge, Stevie, surm, and myself also all started in our late teens and early twenties, fwiw.

I would like to attract more young folks to ILX too, fwiw

if people are going to insist on shit talking off board then maybe actually make an attempt to keep it private?

Honestly, this makes the most sense to me. I do think there is a time for private venting, but if it's not actually private then doesn't that make it pointless? Not saying the slack is pointless or directing any ire to it, but it doesn't feel pleasant knowing that there is a whole dedicated group for slagging people off.

How's there any comparison between a slack with a very limited and clearly denoted userbase and an ilx board that sits right next to the other one? People don't even shit talk each other in 77 afaict, at least as long as I've had access to it. Maybe they did in the past

My understanding of the slack - admittedly limited as I've only heard about its existence through occasional whispers in the wind during a certain phase of the moon on a hot summer's night - comments were/are being made under the assumption that the posters in question wouldn't see them.

I'm not saying people should never talk about other posters as people or acknowledge that they exist as people. I'm not saying people should do anything except learn to keep their shit talk private if they want it to be private.

, Sunday, 13 March 2022 15:34 (two years ago) link

Yes, emil.y! Glad to know there are others who've been here a while, I just have a hard time remembering who, plus there were the 7 years that I lurked and hardly posted.

I've been on longer than most of the name posters here--August 2001. I was 31 then, and I'm 51 now. This feels kind of weird to me.

Yeah, I mean I was barely 21 when I started posting. Gonna be 38 this year.

I'm not talking about the entire slack if that's how you're reading it, I'm talking about what NV was referring to above, the channel of complaining and laughing at and taking the piss out of posters and posts etc

If that really isn't as it sounds then strike me from the record but clearly at least one person has taken it personally

, Sunday, 13 March 2022 15:51 (two years ago) link

that’s not how i was reading it.

Feel free to enlighten me any time you want, or just keep doing this. I guess you're confident that everyone involved was using that channel as if it it were as visible as ILE?

, Sunday, 13 March 2022 15:58 (two years ago) link

Yeah sorry it is incredibly disingenuous to pretend that we all knew about this secret ILX Slack.

we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:00 (two years ago) link

Half the people complaining are mad that the slack isn't more private and half are mad it's not more public. IF YOU WANT TO KNOW, COME BE A PART OF IT. But we have group norms and people will say something if you're a jerk, because we're all people sharing our emotional selves in real time to each other. Jesus christ it's not that complicated.

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:01 (two years ago) link

It's a conversation. If you can't imagine what the norms for that are, may I refer the reader to the mIRC era or whatever your preferred online dosage was. Mine was chatrooms, which is what slack basically is as far as I can tell?

Ima Gardener (in orbit), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:03 (two years ago) link

Thanks for the info.

I'm not on there, but the slack was advertised publicly on threads back when it was created I believe? Fair enough not everyone reads every thread, but don't think there was any effort for anyone to be kept in the dark.

should we just delete ilx and refer every1 to the slack?

brimstead, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:23 (two years ago) link

You see? Keep posting "just come join the Slack" and "it's actually not mostly about dunking on people" and then don't give any further information. Really inspires confidence that it's not just some cliquish BS.

we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:27 (two years ago) link

I dunno how to join either, as I said, I didn't join. Just saying it wasn't created in secret.

yeah sorry, given some of the personal stuff i’ve put on slack vs. the current tenor here, i’m not sharing the link

we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:33 (two years ago) link

Ah, so it isn't a public Slack, then.

we need outrage! we need dicks!! (the table is the table), Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:34 (two years ago) link

Feel free to enlighten me any time you want, or just keep doing this. I guess you're confident that everyone involved was using that channel as if it it were as visible as ILE?

i mean it would be pretty dumb for people to say repeatedly that the slack was open to all and then make an assumption that stuff posted there would stay hidden forever.

and i’m just going to say this once but this was all started by someone who was on the slack and from my perspective not adhering to community standards, who then chose to take their grievance back here and claim that no, it was in fact everyone else who was acting in bad faith.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:36 (two years ago) link

You all seem to be willfully confusing secretive with people valuing their privacy.

This is a good point. It sucks to see someone get hurt as happened today.

treeship., Sunday, 13 March 2022 16:41 (two years ago) link

i just want slack users to promise they'll post a lot to ilx too, because i really don't need to adopt another platform just to maintain the meager substitution for a social fabric that ilx gives me.
