It was basically private until an existing slack contributor had a drunken late night outburst and lashed out at several people and then deleted his inappropriate posts before most of the US woke up and logged back on iirc? And now he's mad at people on the slack for.............not being cool that, I guess?? I don't know why else he has gone around for weeks slyly mentioning it in many other threads and trying to get people stirred up. It's willfully disruptive and has directly resulted in people being hurt by passing conversation that's only still available because the internet is a curse.

The slack and almost weekly zooms were posted about here multiple times two years ago near the beginning of the pandemic so that people could have a more freeform, less publicly displayed conversation. With any community that grows, evolves and builds trust in one another it sometimes will get a little more closed off. How the fuck is this difficult to understand in 2022?

Anyway I mostly stopped posting on ilx because the same people are in a lot of threads and I didn't want to engage with them all the time and I've never figured out how to killfile. And also I love the real-time chat format.

Loooool I joined the slack halfway through its existence when everyone else was already there and it has literally never occurred to me to search for my name. That is an insane overly online thing to do imo.

I think it’s a very human thing to do. People care about their reputations. And also this is the very thing someone did yesterday that led to their feelings being hurt.

learned today that shit talk and gossip are natural things humans need to survive as social creatures but searching your name to see if people shit talked or gossiped about you is bizarre and deviant behavior

I don't see why searching for yr dn is weird. I do it every so often to see if someone responded to me directly in a thread and I missed it. Like there are reasons to do so beyond mere self-absorption.

I mean, I agree that people should have a place to talk about others, blow off steam, whatever. But having it be easily discoverable seems kind of careless. There are some fragile people out here on the ilxes.

Like if i was a student and had my friends over every night to swap stories about how annoying one of our classmates was, and then invited that classmate to one of these gatherings, that would suck. If he felt awkward or hurt by the discussion, it’s not his fault for having accepted the invitation.

not sure how often this needs to be repeated but the issue isn't the slack's discoverability, it's that a specific ilxor decided to act out a grudge against another ilxor by repeatedly drawing negative attention to the slack in such a way that a third ilxor (entirely unrelated to the beef in question) was drawn to look and got badly hurt

the specific ilxor exactly wanted something like this to happen and didn't give a tiny fvck abt the consequences to many others (including the third ilxor)

the specific ilxor is someone i've always got on with and in the past have had no personal issue with but they were absolutely and consciusly and deliberately stirring and got all this -- which is what they wanted -- as a way of "winning" an argument where they had in fact been the primary misbehaver

I don’t want to stigmatize the gossipers either. I just think it should be locked down. Full disclosure I’ve gotten wind of other stuff said in the slack about people I like and it just wasn’t stuff I or they should have heard. You keep the burn book under lock and key—that’s the kind thing to do.

believe it or not but talking about ilx itself constitutes maybe 1-2% of the slack, though frankly it almost feels like i should be using the past tense here

i gave the specific grudge-holding ilxor a lot of benefit of the doubt but it really is hard to avoid concluding that they “blew up our spot” purely out of revenge for being called out on poisonous behaviour

to be fair, ILX used to be so much bitchier out in the open. i participated in that and think much of my behavior was bad, so i am in no position to condemn anyone participating in a Slack i was unaware of. i am sorry Neanderthal discovered comments he was never meant to and also dismayed to discover it’s all a result of Zach TBD’s anger at gyac? mostly because i like all those people. i don’t exactly know why i feel compelled to post in this thread…but i do
