I hate seeing this whole place torn apart like this.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Monday, 14 March 2022 05:55 (two years ago) link

Why is there a Slack? Why was there AIM chatz? Why was (is?) there a Facebook group?

What is wrong with the actual board we're all on? I feel like I almost dont belong here despite being here 20 years because in all that time, I've found out about off-board boards only after the fact (when they blow up like this has) or, in the case of the initial 77 board activity, when I had IRL friends not remotely associated with ILX asking me who X and Y people from here were, because they were writing disparaging comments about me under said non-ILX friend's flickr photos.

I never did find out who did that.

Anyhoo. None of this feels new I suppose.

I get u Trayce. I'm not really interested in going to a separate ilx place, but it makes me feel like I'm not really getting the full picture of anything here, like I'm missing out on the real networking being done by the people in the smoking area. I don't begrudge anyone it of course but also accept that I'll have a different relationship to this place than others.
it's ok, I'll stick to the tv threads.

kinder, Monday, 14 March 2022 08:38 (two years ago) link

Yah my TV and gaming buddies here are good peeps, it'll do me.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 March 2022 08:39 (two years ago) link

I haven’t posted regularly on ILX in years. Tbh it’s blocked at work and I get overwhelmed when I visit as if I don’t even know where to start again. The slack - which was begun during the first lockdown more as a rapid chat forum seemed smaller and more manageable for me so I have been posting there sporadically. There are several channels many of which are similar to those here. There’s a general one and a cooking one for instance. There was one channel that was for ILX discussions that some people posted in. This idea that the slack exists to plan coordinated bullying attacks is incorrect and pretty nuts and I just want to make that really clear.

"Sunday, March 13, 2022 5:45 PM Site Van Horn Street has been banned permanently. 21 FPs in 48 hours"

Just checking is this permanent permanent or a week?

I guess we'll have to see what happens when you get 21'd twice in a month's time. Breaking new ground there, VHS!

peace, man, Monday, 14 March 2022 12:23 (two years ago) link

So, this place has nothing to do with AFL then?

I'm happy to share my thoughts as to why Carlton *can* make the finals this year if anyone is interested.

Pre-Raphaelite Brah (King Boy Pato), Monday, 14 March 2022 12:39 (two years ago) link

KBP! Could do with some more posts from you around here these days.

VHS in actually being useful for a change.

Yep, that is the reason for no end date as of yet. Trying to look through to see if we addressed what to do in the case of 2 consecutive minibans.

emil.y, Monday, 14 March 2022 14:58 (two years ago) link

Be good to know *looks nervously over shoulder lol*

Never secret except that lots of regular posters had never been told about it.

― Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Sunday, March 13, 2022 5:35 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

not for lack of trying!

― thinkmanship (sleeve), Sunday, March 13, 2022 5:36 PM (yesterday) bookmarkflaglink

Probably worth noting that, while ILX can often feel like a tight-knit community, few people read every thread on the board and it's easy to miss stuff. The only reason I knew about the Slack is because someone mentioned it to me off-board around the time it started. (I signed up, realized I didn't have time for it, and haven't logged in since.) So it's not surprising to me that some regular posters might not have known about it and consequently feel left out.

jaymc, Monday, 14 March 2022 15:26 (two years ago) link

hey, do i actually have to remind you that ilx has a search function?

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 15:29 (two years ago) link

There's an xls for that.

I think that maybe we could get certain threads mod-stickied. I think I can remember that happening one time that I've been here, although I might be imagining it (https://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=40&threadid=58899 ???) . The slack announcement could have been one of them (in hindsight).

I thought about this briefly like a month ago when I realized that I never saw the ILM EOY voting thread (which had only been bumped on a handful of occasions) and thus missed the ballots deadline.

peace, man, Monday, 14 March 2022 15:34 (two years ago) link

peace, man: i don't see anything in the admin tools i get that can do that. granted, i don't have all the tools, and i'm guessing that the reason i get errors when i try and use some of the functions is because as a sub-board mod i have more limited permissions? (not complaining, just saying)

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 15:45 (two years ago) link

Yeah, honestly I don't remember that capability from when I was a mod either, so maybe I'm just making it up.

peace, man, Monday, 14 March 2022 15:54 (two years ago) link

The thread that I linked was very apropro, however.

peace, man, Monday, 14 March 2022 15:57 (two years ago) link

hahah yeah, apart from some classic nabisco otm content, this is good to reflect on -- also i miss Edward III

anyway here's why secret boards are bad ideas: a) information wants to be free, and when "secrets" come out the results aren't usually enjoyable, b) secret boards create a sense of disenfranchaisement amongst non-secret board members, and c) it gives the judgment-impaired a screen behind which to hide.

I think all 3 of these factors greased the sledrails on the recent ... debacle. at least when this shit was on noize board people could shrug it off as "what do you expect, noize board is made of dicks", but when it's on some secret area that only "certain people" are privy to, it adds an extra twist of humiliation...

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:01 (two years ago) link

also relevant

the idea that's it's some gossip infested shitstorm with teh bottom feeders of ilx scurrying around and talking shit on ppl they don't know and don't usually interact and argue with is completely false

imago, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:13 (two years ago) link

sarahell, error messages might be permissions-related, but they might just be shonky code! Actually, now I'm thinking about it I've had issues with deleting posts. Could you try deleting a post by ticking the check box, then scrolling down to the "delete selected posts" button?

emil.y, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:13 (two years ago) link

nope, doesn't work -- i get about a dozen lines of error message code when i try to delete a post, with our without ticking the checkbox

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:15 (two years ago) link

it gets me to the "do you really want to do this" screen, i click yes, i get the errors

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:15 (two years ago) link

Ah, bums. That's about as far as my tech help goes, I'm afraid.

emil.y, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:16 (two years ago) link

Sometimes I would just edit the contents of a post and replace it with some text like CONTROVERSIAL MOD EDIT.

peace, man, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:21 (two years ago) link

― peace, man

Honestly, I prefer doing this so you don't then have to delete the responses as well, and people can tell that something was said. Not always the right answer but lots of scenarios where it makes more sense than just deletion.

emil.y, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:26 (two years ago) link

imago - i didn't do that! I can't edit posts ... limited mod powers

imago trying to get you in trouble by fabricating abuse of mod powers, uh oh

emil.y, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:31 (two years ago) link

i think i did give him a comedy threadban a while back so fair play on his part tbh

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:32 (two years ago) link

I heard AbstractAccessLogValve and ThreadPoolExecutor tried to start a band with ThreadSelectedControllerServlet

imago, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:35 (two years ago) link

ThreadSelectedControllerServlet is very very prolific and is like in a dozen other projects; everyone wants to work with ThreadSelectedControllerServlet

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:52 (two years ago) link

don't get me started on the techbro fanbase of AbstractAccessLogValve

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:53 (two years ago) link

their insistence that catalina.core rather than coyote.ajp is the pinnacle of the apache cycle does grate rather

imago, Monday, 14 March 2022 16:56 (two years ago) link

idk catalina.core just makes me feel old y'know? like i was just making peace with vaporwave and then ... it's like i don't understand what music even is anymore?

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 17:22 (two years ago) link

whereas the scene that ThreadPoolExecutor comes out of, I can trace back to stuff that makes sense to me ... like the structure + aesthetic I "get"

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 17:24 (two years ago) link

yeah but it's updated and fresh, you don't put stuff like runWorker out unless you're aware of what's going on right now

imago, Monday, 14 March 2022 17:27 (two years ago) link

oh totally! runWorker is lit af, but then i have that middle-aged self-doubt that stuff like runWorker is catalina.core for olds

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 17:37 (two years ago) link

like prob Thurston Moore and Byron Coley are out there repping for runWorker

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 17:38 (two years ago) link

oh and semi-seriously -- the "hypnagogic pop" reference in yr current thread title -- that's not an oblique reference to something in my personal life?

sarahell, Monday, 14 March 2022 17:40 (two years ago) link

xxp Yeah maybe. We are products of our time after all. But we'll always have that moment AuthenticatorBase dropped, and it felt like something had changed

(not at all! it was a straight c&p of a Whiney post detailing things he didn't want in his experimental music thread)

imago, Monday, 14 March 2022 17:46 (two years ago) link

aha so the anachronism was all a WGW thing ... ok ... the reference (were it to be a reference) would be a very oblique one so n/m
