“Fabioulus Cucina” (which I probably misspelled but Google that)

is there any good weird folky/outsidery/oddball stuff a la Museum of Jurassic Technology and the Watts Towers?

― Stevie D(eux)

Velaslavasay Panorama.

Best thing I've seen in LA. If you email them a couple of days in advance, they'll give you a private tour. They have a little garden with some plants too.

(I also wouldn’t personally recommend Fabiolus. If you want Italian restaurant recs specifically, I have a few)

Next door to the museum of Jurassic technology is the very excellent center for land use interpretation which displays documentation of human incursions on the landscape from land art to engineering projects. Literally next door

In the Culver city area there is the Wende museum devoted to cold war history in an artful rather than didactic way.

On the palisade above the beach in Santa Monica there is a fun camera obscura inside a senior center. May be closed due to covid.

The Griffith park observatory has some very Jurassic like aspects from its excellent architecture to the long walkway lined with space themed costume jewelry.

The Lifes exhibit as the Hammer museum has some Jurassic qualities in it's effort to appeal to all sensory modalities and weird assortment of stuff.
The dioramas and the bird room at the museum of natural history.

If I think of more I'll pop in again

bryan, Sunday, 20 March 2022 17:45 (two years ago) link

yeah the panorama is worth checking out, have been to some cool screenings/readings there. also the garden of oz in the hollywood hills (if it’s open?)

donna rouge, Sunday, 20 March 2022 17:46 (two years ago) link

The Fern Dell to Griffith Observatory hike is a real pleasure on a nice day (if you can handle the uphill grade).

Guisados is a must

The Bradbury Bldg. downtown is fun, if you're a Blade Runner fan (think someone mentioned it above)

Stevie your itinerary is very close to my own in 2019. Have fun! Where are you staying?

calstars, Thursday, 31 March 2022 02:12 (two years ago) link

Stevie, you should go to Hollywood Forever cemetery -- i think there's a rad dude that does funny tours of it?

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 31 March 2022 05:18 (two years ago) link

Oh I thought abt going to that cemetery!!

I am staying in Koreatown right off the purple line and I am definitely going to a spa at some point

Stevie D(eux), Thursday, 31 March 2022 13:42 (two years ago) link

I’d also recommend the Santa Monica pier at sunset. Touristy but really pretty. Maybe some LA people know some better spots on the coast

calstars, Thursday, 31 March 2022 14:15 (two years ago) link

i love LA so much, honestly probably my favorite city in the US

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2022 15:02 (two years ago) link

had such a good time there last week. i wanna move there so bad, $$$$$$ tho. if i had the cash i wouldn't think twice

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2022 15:02 (two years ago) link

marcos tell me what to do!!!!

Stevie D(eux), Thursday, 31 March 2022 16:55 (two years ago) link

black american portraits at LACMA is SO impressive. definitely check it out. LACMA is under construction but the exhibit is open
we ate korean food in some mall restaurant in koreatown, so fucking good
went on a bike ride up the beach from venice to will rogers beach -- "ginger rogers" is the gay beach! maps gave me the heads up on the gay thread. i felt so free on that bike it was amazing
walked up to little ethiopia, so many restaurants
ucla botanical gardens were dope as fuck, meant to go to huntington garden too but LACMA took its spot that afternoon
went to Trulee Hall's exhibit from LA Nomadic Division, https://nomadicdivision.org/exhibition/trulee-hall/, hilarious and fun tbh, i think it may be done now though
biking around in general, the main streets are a little terrifying but cutting through all these residential streets LA is fucking beautiful tbh

i wanted to go out dancing but didn't, the trip was part work for me and w/ jet lag i was so beat.

it was only a few days, i wanna go back more and more and more

marcos, Thursday, 31 March 2022 17:06 (two years ago) link

oh that's pretty much my dream lineup, lacma, koreatown and ginger rogers. that black american portraits exhibit was at the top of our list for the trip we didn't take last december. la is the best city in the us it's true. keep dreaming of going back for a vacay but skint lately, maybe it'll happen soon though.

i do The Punk Rock Graveyard Tour at Hollywood Forever! It's less Renee Adoré and more Rozz Willams (you won't see any music people that made music after 1944 on the other tour)

oh yeah, this time of year is probably perfect weather. i skated residential streets from echo park to amoeba and parts of it are like not even being in the middle of LA.
I had a super Bibimbap in K-town once, too. Forget the name, but was a VERY large restaurant

damn I didn't even schedule LACMA but maybe I'll go after the Academy Museum depending on how tired I am/if there's tix available

Stevie D(eux), Thursday, 31 March 2022 18:54 (two years ago) link

academy museum is such bullshit but the terrace is nice

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 31 March 2022 19:51 (two years ago) link

maybe but I wanna see the Miyazaki exhibit

Stevie D(eux), Thursday, 31 March 2022 20:35 (two years ago) link

The Miyazaki exhibit is interesting / worth the price of admission if you're into his stuff. I agree the museum itself is... not good. The whole thing needs to be reconceptualized or something.

Please don’t take / My time change away (morrisp), Thursday, 31 March 2022 20:41 (two years ago) link

it’s hit or miss and tbh i was underwhelmed by the Miyazaki exhibit. the sci-fi montage rotunda room was my favorite part

So I have a ticket into the former Bob Hope airport and am sposed to be there for a week one month from now…but I am of course wondering if I should cancel in light of BA2… I guess if someone would care to talk about their recent experiences traveling to LA and whether the mask compliance is good there, whether you felt OK about outside vs. inside socializing …it seems like a lot of ILxors went there recently, according to this thread…

veronica moser, Tuesday, 12 April 2022 14:52 (two years ago) link

Cases are indeed rising a bit, but not as high as (say) SF at the moment (or especially parts of the East Coast, as I understand). Of course who knows what things will look like in a month.

Mask "compliance," as in wearing? (they're not required most places indoors in LA County anymore), is moderate to low I guess, depending on the area/neighborhood. If cases increased significantly, I have no doubt the county would quickly re-impose the ordinance, as that's how they roll.
