earlier this week -- I was hanging w/my friend Jenny who was telling me that near the end of the Anarchist Bookfair, there was a table of tankies and there was some kind of drama that I wasn't entirely clear on because neither of us had gone, but her husband did and told her about this.

the whole concept of "irl", i spent like two years only talking to one other person irl so... idk. strict divides between online and in-person discourse don't work for me.

mostly it's like _jargon_, leftist _jargon_, i mean where the hell do people use the word "cisheteronormativity" in person, right? well, anywhere you're in person with me, because it's a word that's relevant to my life, i use that word a lot. just because leftist debates are largely irrelevant to people outside leftist circles doesn't mean those disputes are, like, these bitter fights over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin or some shit that's presumably removed from reality.

See, I recognise that this is often the case now, but as an addendum to my post about using it irl I should point out that 'tankie' does not and should not mean 'communist'. Tankies are Stalin supporters/authoritarian regime apologists.

(upshot was a second fracture of the uk communist party -- conservativew wing vs eurocommuists -- and an intensified hostility towards both wings of same from the many flavours of trots, the latter being the species of far left org that best articulated the aftermath of may 1968, linking the prague spring to solidarnosc as models of a revived left)

from the 90s in the uk it began to break free of intra-communist discourse, as ppl formerly on the far left as students began to find their feet in the non-communist parliamentary left and used it to mock the inablity of the old far left to "modernise" (modernise being a term with a variety of meanings in the event: the kpunk wing of the far left were just as scornful of the traditional far left as the newly careetist nu-centre were, and tankie was a term often deployed in that scorn)

since the 00s it has increasingly simply een an online insult -- and occasional an ironised online self-identification -- which has broken fully free of uk secatrian parochialism and could often honestly just be swapped out for "bot" (or "trot") for a particular kind of teenage channer trolling complete with left-informed wojacks and etc. it no longer applies to membership of anything resembling a political party of organisation that a 56-er tankie would recognise as left politics at all -- and you more and more hear it as a dismissal in the mouths of ppl not remotely on the left (at which point it doesn't really overlap with the meanings and implications a lefty with a sense of history probably hears in it)
