if these are google streetview photos (the first one has the watermark) then that further limits the countries in play, theres only a few african countries with coverage

ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 16:34 (one year ago) link

i do still suspect it's in eastern south africa or one of the kingdoms, there's a lot of places in that region that look like that

ciderpress, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 16:39 (one year ago) link

I'm still liking Kampala for this, but I don't know. That little hill keeps cropping up, but the similar one in Kampala is sort of taller

I did find a house with that gate

Presuming second view is also a street view, its not often they're done at dusk

The road divider things are super distinctive!

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 17:22 (one year ago) link

My first thought was Ethiopia (although I had no idea where) which logically leads me to Kenya next - through driving on the left.

Road markings v similar to Britain too so I want to say Commonwealth.

found the weird railings I think

nicely done cb

rob, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 19:46 (one year ago) link

Hell yeah! Nice work.

Just a query: I wasn't sure whether it was "solved" when people mentioned they were thinking Kampala— what do we consider "solved" here? is it more about someone saying with certainty that it is a specific place and being correct? Or is it guided by mere mention of the accurate place?

Sorry if this has been gone over, I just don't know!

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 20:17 (one year ago) link

I think it's solved when the person posting the city considers it to be solved!

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 20:21 (one year ago) link

Okay! Glad I waited. Numerous posters thinking it was Kampala made me think it best until someone found the exact locale or said it with certainty.

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 20:24 (one year ago) link

With this one I guessed Kampala pretty early, but not with any certainty whatsoever (and Rob suggested it before me too). I gradually got more sure on it, but wasn't till I found the weird crash barrier that I actually knew (actually the road with the barrier on)

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 20:24 (one year ago) link

Where are you based again, cb?

broccoli rabe thomas (the table is the table), Tuesday, 5 July 2022 20:28 (one year ago) link

well done cb!

StanM, Tuesday, 5 July 2022 22:02 (one year ago) link

yes, imo the thread-game's rules have evolved to mean you have to post the exact map location. unfortunately that means I will never "win" but that's okay, I am always impressed with other posters' skills!

hmm not a lot to go on here but i'd start my search in turkey or the balkan countries i think? unless i'm missing an important clue

can anyone decipher what’s on the box next to the entrance?

big movers, hot steppers + long shaker intros (breastcrawl), Sunday, 10 July 2022 17:18 (one year ago) link

The pavement, brick steps, street light and building finish don't really look UK to me.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:05 (one year ago) link

It was the pavement and foliage which did look UK to me, them and the rubbish. I'm with you on the building tho, that's what's throwing me

ignore the blue line (or something), Sunday, 10 July 2022 18:13 (one year ago) link

Doesn't look UK to me, and the building looks too shoddy to be most places in Western Europe. I'm guessing somewhere in Eastern Europe.

Zelda Zonk, Sunday, 10 July 2022 20:58 (one year ago) link

My guess is Marseilles but I don't have enough time to trawl the streets around the migrant / public housing in La Castellane. Looking at the original the trees might be too green tho.

The German city of Freiburg is currently no slouch in the shoddiness stakes.

the street lamp looks quite distinctive but how do you start googling that, there's like 2 billion different street lamp designs in the world

StanM, Monday, 11 July 2022 10:48 (one year ago) link

It was the pavement and foliage which did look UK to me

you're right, i was looking on my phone and the paving stones didn't look offset, but yep that could be uk paving. still think the building's too shoddy.

if you look at the reflection on the window to the right (as we see) of the front door you can make out some stuff, theres a car here i can't quite make out the model

Ste, Monday, 11 July 2022 12:13 (one year ago) link

What is that metal loop sticking out of the wall to the right of the door?

Any clues in the figurines in the lefthand window?

A boot scraper?

human, giraffe, snake?/cat?/??, camel - just decorative stuff, no?

- reflected car feels like it could be Peugeot or Mercedes?
- yeah, boot scraper
- figurines: maybe someone from Africa lives there? or someone who likes the continent

StanM, Monday, 11 July 2022 14:38 (one year ago) link

yeah that can be misleading. Like, if you looked inside my window and saw a horrendous amount of computer coding books you might be completely wrong thinking I'm sort of genius.

Ste, Monday, 11 July 2022 14:41 (one year ago) link

In the reflection I thought it might be a park opposite with some kind of structure in it resembling a pyramid of metal framework. Assuming a lot there though.

Ste, Monday, 11 July 2022 14:43 (one year ago) link

The general style of building doesn't look British - purpose-built flats aren't common outside London. And yet there appears to be zebra crossing on the road to the left. The streetlamp looks distinctive, but Google Lens is (typically) useless at recognising it. I see the building is number 3.

It looks like a typical French-style HLM, very much like the headline image:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HLM

The way that the windows are cut in two by the gutter is odd, though. You have to wonder about the interior layout. Why aren't there windows on the second and third floors? Even if it was a stairwell you'd expect windows. And if it is a stairwell it can't be much fun for the people living in the rooms at the ground floor. When they have a wank they're just a couple of feet away from people walking by on the street. That must be disconcerting. I would be worried about the postman knocking on the window to deliver a parcel. Or what if the light is on at night, and you're backlit?

Ashley Pomeroy, Monday, 11 July 2022 17:28 (one year ago) link

my approach has been trying to find an identical lamppost which has been unsuccessful so far

reflected car is likely to be the photo car right? so not necessarily representative of the local cars

ciderpress, Monday, 11 July 2022 18:20 (one year ago) link

you can see the photo car in the door reflection yes, but in the window to the right is another car

Ste, Monday, 11 July 2022 18:21 (one year ago) link

Was getting hits on similar-ish lighting around Bratislava and Ostrava. The lack of AC kept me further North.

horizontal, Tuesday, 12 July 2022 00:00 (one year ago) link

A built-in boot scraper makes me think it either dates from a time when horses were prevalent, or it's a muddy climate.

From the undoubtedly uneven selection of boot scraper pictures in Wikimedia Commons (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Door_scrapers), metal loops attached to buildings are not as commons as ones attached to the ground. For what it's worth, most of the metal loop pictures came from Germany and France.

Hideous Lump, Tuesday, 12 July 2022 03:21 (one year ago) link

Thought I'd found the lamppost style in Frankfurt but wasn't confident enough it was right.

I think the key might be in that bit of a cardboard box to our left of the front door. I can't get a clear enough resolution to see what it is.

I've found inconclusive evidence that that exact kind of streetlight exists in Braga, Portugal.

dear confusion the catastrophe waitress (ledge), Tuesday, 12 July 2022 10:52 (one year ago) link

I've now found definitive evidence, but I've also found this:

https://www.lighting.philips.com.eg/prof/outdoor-luminaires/road-and-urban-lighting/road-and-street/metronomis/metronomis-malmoe/910502140518_EU/product

So highly doubtful Braga is the only place that has them!

One way street?

The cars look fairly new, and there's a handicapped parking space (I've never seen one designated like that in the US), so maybe southern Europe?

I suspect the orange-backed traffic signs will be the important clue.
