Od's Blood! Hath ILE no thread for anticipation of THOR 4? Verily?

Parallel thread, activate! Enjoyed this a lot, haven't read any reviews but I did see that it's got a lower review average than many of these movies, to which I can only ask, why? Just rewatched the latest Doctor strange, which one of my kids wanted to see, and this is so much better than that. Good to have a bad guy with at least minimally complex motives, Even if the bad guy in this case was essentially Voldemort.

I really didn't dig it, and I'm not entirely sure why? I think you could probably build two or three really good films out of the bits of it, but they didn't really gel together. And I'm not usually averse to tonal shifts!

Partly this was Bale - terrible when he's serious and more terrible when he's not (the bit? in the cage? with the snake?)

Partly this was too much Taika Waititi in multiple dimensions - there's another screenwriter involved but I'm guessing that they didn't get much of a chance to rewrite Korg, and Korg is all over the film, offering wry commentary and flattening any attempts to get a vibe going.

Also Waititi can't leave a joke alone - the first few times Stormbringer drifted jealously into frame were good, but it brought the film screeching to a halt at least once more after that - and then in the finale, where it might've been of some relevance, Thor just hacks at a few arms.

And again the actors joke is rolled out (because it's funny), and then again at a time of great trauma (when it's not). And it hits slightly differently from the original (that it's a sign of the vanity of Loki-as-Odin) that it's now New Asgard as gaudy tourist trap.

I liked Tessa Thompson a lot as Valkryie in Ragnarok - now she's here but not here, most are exposition and reaction, or wry exposition or wry reaction.

The Paradise Omnipotence City section is weird because one the one hand it's entirely unnecessary to the film, but on the other it's one of the few times that they're not shuttling from point A to point B and it's actually really fun in a way that a lot of the rest of the film isn't? Waititi still has a great eye for bright and varied spectacle.

The death for me was when Thor was giving his third pompous and useless speech of the film, to the kids in the cage, and I realised he was resembling no-one so much as Boris Johnson.

There is exactly as much Guardians of the Galaxy as there should be (which means I saw most of it in the trailers) and far too little Kat Dennings.

The comparison I made on the Marvel thread is to Terry Gilliam's "Baron Munchausen." Maybe not entirely successful, but pretty weird and enjoyable on its own terms.

I saw a quote from Taika Waititi in the last week, that he was getting pissy that lots of people are discovering Kate Bush through Stranger Things when that's the only song they know, and he was going to have a bunch of less well-known songs by her on the soundtrack until this (which is, like, a month ago?) and so I was amused to see that the soundtrack is actually the three biggest hits by struggling indie rock band Guns'n'Roses.

lol he was going to have a "bunch" of Kate Bush songs in the movie? Really? More than one? And deep cuts? I saw the quote, and sure, I can imagine him slipping in "This Woman's Work," but that's not exactly a deep cut, especially in movies.

Thor cracking skulls to "Suspended in Gaffa"

Yeah, it was from the NME interview:

Christian Bale said you were supposed to have a Kate Bush dance scene in Love and Thunder?

Before Stranger Things! Yeah, there were a bunch of Kate Bush songs I wanted to have in there. We were gonna have ‘This Woman’s Work’, which was gonna be great for <a scene with> Natalie Portman’s character.

I enjoyed this a lot, it was very silly & fun but had kind of a nice serious message too?

Overall vibe was “ballpoint pen cartoons about comics & gods & metal band logos that you scribble in your workbook in maths class” but also lots of feels too. I like Taika’s vibe in general & the light touch w comedy & music & visual fun is what i needed

LOVED the kids, loved that they got to fight, loved Mjolnir with a pretty face on it & sparkly streamers

Thought Bale was excellent, and Rusty was a hoot in his little tunic skirt & ridic Greek accent i died

The song over the credits was great & worth the wait & very fitting lol

I would like to add that Portman looked hot af as Mighty Thor btw
