Thought I'd found the lamppost style in Frankfurt but wasn't confident enough it was right.

I think the key might be in that bit of a cardboard box to our left of the front door. I can't get a clear enough resolution to see what it is.

I've found inconclusive evidence that that exact kind of streetlight exists in Braga, Portugal.

I've now found definitive evidence, but I've also found this:

https://www.lighting.philips.com.eg/prof/outdoor-luminaires/road-and-urban-lighting/road-and-street/metronomis/metronomis-malmoe/910502140518_EU/product

So highly doubtful Braga is the only place that has them!

excellent sleuthing!

One way street?

The cars look fairly new, and there's a handicapped parking space (I've never seen one designated like that in the US), so maybe southern Europe?

I suspect the orange-backed traffic signs will be the important clue.

nickn, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 22:18 (one year ago) link

Actually strike "southern," I guess it could be northern too.

nickn, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 22:19 (one year ago) link

learning in my search that some european countries don't seem to have handicapped parking spaces at all. i wont name any names

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 23:12 (one year ago) link

the orange signs appear to be belgian in nature

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 23:37 (one year ago) link

They do, yes, but the handicapped space with the blue line, the special type of ground floor window, the mandatory rose bush for everyone, I wouldn't immediately know where to place those in Belgium

StanM, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 23:44 (one year ago) link

the TV distribution thing with the cable running to it on every house does feel Belgian again too though

StanM, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 23:47 (one year ago) link

found some similar looking streets in bruges but the houses were too big and nice, think it must be a smaller city if this is in the city and not a suburb

ciderpress, Wednesday, 13 July 2022 23:58 (one year ago) link

Maybe stating the obvious as a new player, but my hopes of Luxembourg (based on money for fancy new lights) is dashed by the plates on the cars. Netherlands is out too.

horizontal, Thursday, 14 July 2022 02:26 (one year ago) link

i wasn't able to find the orange signs in any neighboring country even right near the belgium border so i think everything else is ruled out

ciderpress, Thursday, 14 July 2022 02:39 (one year ago) link

plot twist: cherry blossom is receiving these pics from a hacked phone and we are racing to locate an international arms smuggler

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 14 July 2022 03:11 (one year ago) link

I'm keeping an eye out for people with more than two arms

StanM, Thursday, 14 July 2022 06:58 (one year ago) link

the houses are too uniform for Belgium IMO. I'm thinking it might be somewhere Nordic or Scandi, so a less pretty part of Odense or Tampere, perhaps.

Critique of the Goth Programme (Neil S), Thursday, 14 July 2022 08:07 (one year ago) link

Definitely think it's Belgium, as I've seen handicapped parking spaces there that are marked liked that (in Brussels?)

residential areas by one and the same architect are a thing in Belgium, all houses looking the same

StanM, Thursday, 14 July 2022 08:16 (one year ago) link

"sociale woonwijk"

StanM, Thursday, 14 July 2022 08:17 (one year ago) link

I stand corrected! Well it's a flat bit of Belgium, so that excludes Liege and surrounds, but apart from that I have no idea

Ontwikkelingstraat, Brussels I think.

I actually recognised this one, although I've never been, because I came across pics of a similar street nearby, the rue de la Cite Moderne, in a book about modernist housing estates.

nice work!

I don't think I have the google maps chops (or the time) to find the first pic though.

this is the Cité Moderne, a neighborhood built in 1922-1925, by architect Victor Bourgeois:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victor_Bourgeois

StanM, Thursday, 14 July 2022 11:30 (one year ago) link

Tim already said that but I didn't know that was the name of the whole neighborhood

StanM, Thursday, 14 July 2022 11:41 (one year ago) link

ha, the first picture is about 3 clicks away from the second if you click beyond the road barrier that blocks the next road on the left.

the place all looks shabby, like the places near where i live that were built immediately after the war in the cheapest materials and pebbledashed to hide the worst of it

koogs, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:28 (one year ago) link

Well done!

kinder, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:34 (one year ago) link

It does look like it's in need of some looking after for sure, architecturally pretty nice though, it's been on my list of places I want to go for some years now.

Tim, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:38 (one year ago) link

(So much so that I spent my lunch hour identifying modernist churches I might visit on a future trip to Brussels, I can feel a plan coming together nicely)

Tim, Thursday, 14 July 2022 15:41 (one year ago) link

If you turn left and go down the road a bit it seems that between 2009 and 2013 a new estate was built around the corner, in which appears to be a modern homage to the original style:

The top link is 2009, the bottom 2013. It has the same street lights but the buildings have more wood.

Warrington, UK - looking towards Fiddlers Ferry Power Station (which has 8 towers but is the first google images result if you look for power station "7 towers" :-) )

https://www.google.be/maps/@53.3828828,-2.6086605,3a,75y,12.14h,83.03t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipNQQlG1nwnjXj3TE2hbPXnOjvuWuOUGUbeQ9dch!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipNQQlG1nwnjXj3TE2hbPXnOjvuWuOUGUbeQ9dch%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya60.99318-ro-0-fo100!7i5734!8i2867

How'd you find it so quick?

nickn, Thursday, 21 July 2022 16:18 (one year ago) link

I told you: I googled "power station "7 towers" " and the first result looked VERY suspiciously correct + the hills in the distance did too

StanM, Thursday, 21 July 2022 17:05 (one year ago) link

first result in Images

StanM, Thursday, 21 July 2022 17:05 (one year ago) link

and then the first aerial picture already looked like it was the right direction

https://www.google.be/maps/@53.3742371,-2.6680439,3a,75y,38.96h,86.71t/data=!3m8!1e1!3m6!1sAF1QipPUHszeH6erpADiR2Jk4tSuQ8ISZxIOml_Tjokg!2e10!3e11!6shttps:%2F%2Flh5.googleusercontent.com%2Fp%2FAF1QipPUHszeH6erpADiR2Jk4tSuQ8ISZxIOml_Tjokg%3Dw203-h100-k-no-pi-0-ya38.014175-ro-0-fo100!7i8192!8i4096

so we need to be further back + two bridges near each other: and that was it. Lucky :-)

I'd recognise Fiddler's Ferry in a heartbeat, Granadaland icon

ignore the blue line (or something), Thursday, 21 July 2022 17:57 (one year ago) link

Bit too obvious a landmark that one eh? I was going to do it pointing in the opposite direction originally

Christmas in Davenport (cherry blossom), Thursday, 21 July 2022 18:17 (one year ago) link

I only found it via that google search, wasn't familiar with it
