should also be noted that Michael Tae Sweeney is a film and tv editor, with little expertise on the issue, and the person he quoted (Marc Joseph Stern, who is an extremely reliable source) didn't have quite the outlook he did. MJS is more baffled at the entire filing and thinks the most Trump will get out of the judge is slow-walking the case.
xpost yeah it's never been a certainty he would be indicted to begin with.

how many times do we have to do thishe IS stupid AND he was the 45th president. we are at the point now where that is demonstrably true.he’s not a secret genius no matter how much you want that to be true, no matter how much you want to believe that only smart people attain power he IS stupid and any success he has isnt because he’s a secret genius it’s because there’s a system allowing it to happen

there have been like 500 tell-all books about Donald Trump and the only ones that promote a remotely flattering assessment of his intelligence are the ones he paid to have written. whenever he goes off-prompter he either says the dumbest shit imaginable or acts like he has no clue what he just said 5 seconds ago. hate to be one of the guys who say this kind of bullshit but reality TV really did lead us directly to this, literally and figuratively

Even bypassing the redactions, it's immediately clear that there is very narrowly written statutory language describing what you're allowed to do with classified and secret documents, whether you're an ex-president or a janitor, and that this fuck broke every rule of document security. He should already be in prison.

...Cannon, who was nominated by Trump and confirmed by the Senate about a week after his defeat in 2020, said she plans to hold a hearing Thursday in West Palm Beach on the former president’s request for a special master. She typically convenes court in Fort Pierce, Fla., about an hour’s drive north of there. The judge’s two-page order giving “notice of [her] preliminary intent to appoint a special master in this case” came less than a day after Trump’s attorneys late Friday made a pitch for an independent review of the materials seized from his Mar-a-Lago estate and before prosecutors filed any reply.Cannon gave no indication how she viewed Trump’s claims that the search was unnecessary and extreme. Instead, she asked Trump to file a brief responding to the Justice Department’s produced list of seized materials. She also asked both sides to describe specifically the role they envision for a special master. And she asked DOJ to reveal the status of its filter review, and whether any investigators outside of the review team had seen the seized materials. The Department of Justice declined to comment on the ruling.Appointments of special masters to oversee the handling of evidence seized in federal criminal investigations are unusual, but typically have occurred when prosecutors seize records from an attorney’s office. Judges in Manhattan used the mechanism in recent years in connection with investigations into two Trump attorneys: Michael Cohen and Rudy Giuliani.

Leaving aside how far Judge Cannon is going to accommodate Trump, it’s not like appointing a special master changes anything about Trump’s potential liability or the legitimacy of DOJ’s search. It’s about the possible return of *some* of the seized materials — and nothing more. https://t.co/MrWQdacvfi— Steve Vladeck (@steve_vladeck) August 27, 2022

to me the crazy part is admitting he lost because the FBI (that he presided over) didn't publicly pursue his political opponents aggressively enough and that amounts to election interference.
