Donald Trump: Classic or Dud?

i'm sure trump hates his guts, but barr did him a major solid by putting out that memo (or press release? I don't remember) that purportedly summarized the findings of the Mueller report, weeks/months before that report became public. he straight up lied to protect Trump. he made it seem like an exoneration for Trump. Even now, to this day, since no one ever reads shit like the Muller report, even many/most liberal/left people have no idea how damning it was (and even that, from Mueller's team, seeming to bend over backward for Trump at every point)

it took a village to polish that turd for America

Karl Malone, Friday, 2 September 2022 21:47 (one year ago) link

Didn't the unredacted version of the Mueller report he summarized just come out a few days ago, revealing ... nothing? Or did I miss something.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 September 2022 21:48 (one year ago) link

barr is a pile of steaming shit but the part in that clip about how long the DOJ should be expected to wait before acting is pretty solid

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 2 September 2022 21:49 (one year ago) link

xpost i didn't know that an unredacted version just came out, i wasn't trying to reference current news, whoops. but...

it wasn't the redactions that were the problems with it. i'm talking about criticisms that were evident as soon as the Mueller report came out. differences between how Barr described them (falsely, inaccurately "leaked" it, more like) and what the actual contents of the released report were.

I wouldn't want to send him to a gulag, but I do think it would be fitting if he were disbarred.

“The inconsistencies between Attorney General Barr’s statements, made at a time when the public did not have access to the redacted version of the Mueller Report to assess the veracity of his statements, and portions of the redacted version of the Mueller Report that conflict with those statements cause the Court to seriously question whether Attorney General Barr made a calculated attempt to influence public discourse about the Mueller Report in favor of President Trump despite certain findings in the redacted version of the Mueller Report to the contrary,” the judge added.

wow, Barr got slammed on that one! so many consequences for him!!

Karl Malone, Friday, 2 September 2022 21:54 (one year ago) link

bill barr was like, damn, i'm never going to be invited on television again

Asked what he thought of the argument for the appointment of a special master, Mr. Barr laughed. “I think it’s a crock of shit,” he said, adding, “I don’t think a special master is called for.” https://t.co/auJhHiRXGN

I've a hunch that Barr is deeply offended that, after Trump hired him as AG, he's publicly employed a long list of lawyers who are complete hacks and fools, thus forcing Barr to be associated with them in the public mind.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Friday, 2 September 2022 22:48 (one year ago) link

Right. Barr may be a liar, an authoritarian and an enabler of authoritarians, but he is neither a hack nor a fool.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 2 September 2022 22:51 (one year ago) link

no he's a hack

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 September 2022 23:22 (one year ago) link

Yeah but he is a *conceited* hack, and one whose father helped give Jeffrey Epstein a leg up into high society. We must respect him.

treeship., Friday, 2 September 2022 23:26 (one year ago) link

I guess we can at least agree he is not a quack.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 2 September 2022 23:28 (one year ago) link

He’s just a fucking asshole GOP apparatchik.

treeship., Friday, 2 September 2022 23:29 (one year ago) link

The best description I ever read of Barr's look was "Steve Bannon Meets Queer Eye."

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 2 September 2022 23:29 (one year ago) link

He’d still be carrying water for Trump if it was in any way in his interest to do so. He’s just making a different calculation these days.

treeship., Friday, 2 September 2022 23:30 (one year ago) link

He was awful as Poppy's AG

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 September 2022 23:30 (one year ago) link

Alfred have you read Russ Baker’s book “Family of Secrets,” and if so do you regard it as quackery or a pretty good portrayal of how the Bush family situated themselves at the center of American power?

It's OK to remind everyone that Trump is a shameless liar who will say anything that he thinks will make him look like an admirable human instead of a worthless piece of shit. It ain't news but it is truth.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 4 September 2022 03:42 (one year ago) link

you are correct

and i guess i'm glad that you haven't become too disheartened to mention it yet again now when it meant nothing 10 years ago

the only solution to trumpism is to displatform trump completely from everything

appeals to hypocrisy are laughable

It's absolutely infuriating, is what it is.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Sunday, 4 September 2022 04:50 (one year ago) link

forgive my being slow on the uptake but it recently crystallized for me that (one explanation for why) the core cult simps for him so hard is because he’s an avatar of all the privileges: white, male, straight, cis, rich. he can’t break the law because he is the law. he can’t ever face consequences because he can’t ever be wrong. that’s why every foul thing he says and does just cleaves those fuckheads closer to him. his untouchableness, his absolute freedom to publicly indulge in every lowest stupidest harefulest impulse, is a reflection and amplification of their own privilege (actual or aspirational).

feeling pretty “um, no duh" about taking so long to see this. i bet others have been pointing it out for ages.

he's just the result of a spoiled brat never being taught responsibility. It's always someone else's fault, you can run away from everything, you can pay people instead of doing anything yourself, etc

StanM, Sunday, 4 September 2022 07:10 (one year ago) link

It goes beyond that. He has a truly aberrant personality. Without money, he'd likely be in jail or dead already.

A document describing a foreign government’s military defenses, including its nuclear capabilities, was found by FBI agents who searched former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence and private club last month, according to people familiar with the matter, underscoring concerns among U.S. intelligence officials about classified material stashed in the Florida property.
Some of the seized documents detail top-secret U.S. operations so closely guarded that many senior national security officials are kept in the dark about them. Only the president, some members of his Cabinet or a near-Cabinet-level official could authorize other government officials to know details of these special-access programs, according to people familiar with the search, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive details of an ongoing investigation.
