^ that's the only one i know tbh but i really love it. which of their other records are similar?

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Tuesday, 18 October 2022 20:06 (one year ago) link

(basically i still have days where i listen to 'teargas' twenty times in a row and i'm more than happy with that, but i guess i *could* diversify at some point?)

o shit the sheriff (NickB), Tuesday, 18 October 2022 20:10 (one year ago) link

last fair deal gone down has a run where every song is the best katatonia song ever from "teargas" through like "fear of speech"

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 October 2022 20:35 (one year ago) link

i would say logical next step is viva emptiness or the great cold distance

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 October 2022 20:35 (one year ago) link

thanks brad, they will be my work soundtrack for tomorrow

personal fave from viva emptiness, "wealth"

i think it's maybe their most radio-forward album? parts will recall nu-metal but as if filtered through a fine mist. what i think is crazy about this record is the twin effect of 1) how proggy the riffs are 2) how catchy the songs are

great cold distance feels like they settle into a groove (and they sort of do up to and including fall of hearts)

i want to do a discog ranking but it's frustrating, i think you could argue for any katatonia record as their best excepting idk tonight's decision (i'm sure that's someone's favorite)

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 23 October 2022 01:35 (one year ago) link

dance of december souls
discouraged ones
the fall of hearts
last fair deal gone down
dead end kings
night is the new day
brave murder day
the great cold distance
viva emptiness
city burials
tonight's decision

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 23 October 2022 01:38 (one year ago) link

top three are three of the greatest albums ever released by anyone

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Sunday, 23 October 2022 01:39 (one year ago) link

ok i made that ranking before revisiting city burials which is much better than its position implies, lol

i would like to write at length about why katatonia is the greatest band of all time but i never really know what to say! like, yeah, sure, i just love it when the riffs curl up like a dying spider's legs but beyond that idk! something ineffable! when autumn or a particularly gloomy day comes around you want to put them on and stare at the gray world through your window with the impassiveness of a raven! their b-sides are also crazy good! and i really love this 2011 show where they play all of last fair deal gone down and then a sampling of tracks across their discog including "brave" and "i break"!

I was seeing that cover image as "Sky Full Of Stars" and thinking, yeah I can see Katatonia pull off a decent cover of that.

i was grieving over running out of katatonia albums to listen to but i just found out about october tide's rain without end! yeah!

flamenco drop (BradNelson), Friday, 28 October 2022 03:26 (one year ago) link

seriously if you're like me and have been looking for a secret follow-up or at least something else approximating the desolate decayed "alone in my castle thinking about the absence of god" atmosphere of dance of december souls, the october tide record is the closest i've come to it

god they're just always so good

Need to get back on this band soon. I didn't like For Funerals To Come much and I think maybe that delayed me a bit, even though I know the album after that is a classic.

Have you heart The Fall Of Every Season? Both albums scratch the early-Katatonia itch very well. Saturnus “Paradise Belongs To You” as well.
