blue check, blue check official, blue check lite

A lot of folks have asked about how you'll be able to distinguish between @TwitterBlue subscribers with blue checkmarks and accounts that are verified as official, which is why we’re introducing the “Official" label to select accounts when we launch. pic.twitter.com/0p2Ae5nWpO

— Esther Crawford ✨ (@esthercrawford) November 8, 2022

Not all previously verified accounts will get the “Official” label and the label is not available for purchase. Accounts that will receive it include government accounts, commercial companies, business partners, major media outlets, publishers and some public figures.

— Esther Crawford ✨ (@esthercrawford) November 8, 2022

The new Twitter Blue does not include ID verification – it’s an opt-in, paid subscription that offers a blue checkmark and access to select features. We’ll continue to experiment with ways to differentiate between account types.

Soothes the dumbest blue checks who think it is a special privilege, keeps the door open for the grifters because their victims will never go looking for the “official” tag.

I actually have a new prediction: Elon musk is going to create a second kind of blue check that will be given to those who already have them. Perhaps it’s not a blue check - or maybe the $8/month isn’t for a blue check. Either way, it’s going to be very funny

it should have occurred to me that if they actually fired engineers based on code commits or whatever, then they fired all the people who keep the site running

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 01:43 (one year ago) link

Note I am skeptical the site will break in the coming weeks, more likely the product and advertiser situation fails to stabilise and that does medium term damage. But it would be extremely funny if the product breaks and that article makes a good case that it might happen.

look this is undoubtedly a better idea than just letting everyone be "verified" for $8 but I bet you Elon personally is gonna make a lot of decisions regarding who gets to keep "verified" status

frogbs, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 15:52 (one year ago) link

thing is they just should let anyone who wants to get verified but theyre unwilling or unable to actually do the verification, and it should be free, or they could even charge a one time processing fee sure why not, but fake verification as a revenue stream is just wrong and shortsighted, as many have pointed out twitter itself greatly benefits from having reliable identities on there

on the whole I'd say the general anonymity of posters on the internet is more of a bane than a boon. it promotes recklessness through lack of accountability. but it is now deeply embedded in all our expectations of how the internet works and any imposition of rules requiring use of your true identity would cause riots. people like to indulge their own recklessness, even if they deplore it in others.

No problem with people not using their real names online (or offline, really). A pseudonymous identity is fine as long as it’s fairly stable and doesn’t involve impersonation.

it's not like anyone willing to do that under their true name will ever shrink from owning their fascism under any circumstances. still seems marginally preferable to their doing it pseudonymously.

Googling around reveals that this may have been being pushed out for a few months now, but I opened the app earlier this morning and it popped up asking to connect to other devices on my local network. Uh, no thanks. When I saw it I assumed the worst of Elon, but I guess this was being rolled out before he came into the picture as part of the newer ios requirements for asking permission. Something to do with video casting, but skeptical af as to why Twitter would need that.

The official label is still going out as part of the @TwitterBlue launch -- we are just focusing on government and commercial entities to begin with. What you saw him mention was the fact that we're not focusing on giving individuals the "Official" label right now.

im personally all for internet anonymity but for twitter its good for them if official sources are official, as far as randos prob doesnt make much difference

lag∞n, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 19:03 (one year ago) link

but if randos want it let them have it why not thats called customer service, having it be a profit center obvs corrupts the whole idea tho

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Wednesday, 9 November 2022 19:17 (one year ago) link

idk anonymity is also extremely important for marginalized people (especially trans people) plus lots and lots of people who do not live in the USA. I've also heard a few nightmare anecdotes about getting verified by FB requiring you to upload passports and the like

rob, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 19:21 (one year ago) link

yeah there are good legit reasons to be anon like safety for vulnerable people, and good non legit reasons like its nice and its internet, i dont think reddit really proves anything outside reddit sucks and maybe huge platforms suck (something proven by all huge platforms including and maybe especially facebook which requires real names)

lag∞n, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 19:27 (one year ago) link

Outside of Facebook I don’t think I’ve ever used a gendered username anywhere, and there’s a reason for that.

after several days on “the milk,” (gyac), Wednesday, 9 November 2022 19:28 (one year ago) link

Yes, excellent point. See also ethnicity, religion, and caste for last names.

mh, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 19:39 (one year ago) link

should also be noted that to some extent were all vulnerable to bad things happening re our names being tied to our posts whats the chance say the usa goes full fash in the next five years its not zero even tho im a cis white straight american male info worker doesnt mean i really want public posts next to my real name saying “ it is good too burn police stations lol”, thats a dramatic example but you could get fired lose yr health care etc over some fb bs too

this is a good point. twitter's product development is slow in part because if they are required to follow an extremely pedantic process agreed with the FTC in order to settle with them. i'm thinking this is not what musk is doing.

By the way, is there anyone left at Twitter who remembers that the company is still under a pretty stringent FTC consent decree that has, you know, some requirements about launching new products & services and having a written plan about their security? https://t.co/ZjytSLUq1W pic.twitter.com/Wc1iJKeEEZ

— Mike Masnick (@mmasnick) November 9, 2022

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 9 November 2022 21:39 (one year ago) link

unless the FTC has any actual teeth to enforce that decree, i don't think musk cares much about it - see his own agreement with the SEC to have an outside advisor pre-approve all tweets, which is also not what musk is doing

, Wednesday, 9 November 2022 21:44 (one year ago) link

no i'm sure he doesn't, but the FTC does have enforcement capabilities.
