this (literally) kicks off in a few days 😉
I've seen people literally say "If you post about the world cup I'm cutting you" - I think this is going to be a quiet one (though people will argue about whether that's this world cup or the death of Twitter)

As an engineer at Twitter, I can confirm that Elon Musk doesn’t understand anything about our website, or coding in general. Not gonna lie, we laugh REALLY hard about it behind his back. We’ve been calling him “the CEO,” but it stands for Code Efficiency 0.— diana thirst (@rlycalm) November 15, 2022

I have noticed a lot more timeouts and 500s in the past week or so than I had in the preceding, say, several months. It's already struggling but it's not attracting widespread notice probably because it's a bit subtle and people are used to all software being kind of broken all of the time

is that bad?
― The Bankruptcy of the Planet of the Apes (PBKR), Wednesday, 16 November 2022 22:13 (one year ago) link
eh, apologies, the details of how twitter does sms 2fa mean it's difficult to spoof a number, i.e. this is bad but it's not very bad.
Ok, it's been pointed out to me that using short codes for this should make it much harder to spoof - they're routed inside the carrier, and the carrier already knows your number— Matthew Garrett (@mjg59) November 16, 2022

now that Musk has driven the value of Twitter into the dumper, what if Twitter users did a massive global GoFundMe and bought him out and ran it as a cooperative, like, I dunno, the Green Bay Packers

Time for RSS to make a big comeback
― G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Friday, 18 November 2022 00:50 (one year ago) link
Just can’t turn away from the trainwreck. If only NYT had a Twitter collapse meter I could watch to know pseudo-objectively how close we’re getting to impact. Are bookies taking odds on when it will happen? I guess “website total collapse” would have to be very clearly defined if so. RSS would be awesome if A) anyone websites still used it and B) there were options for shitposting (I am recovering to be clear). I still was regularly using the Netvibes RSS client within the past couple of years but it seems like even over that span the popularity of RSS has seriously waned.

Is there a bet available in betting markets for predicting times of system disruption/ length of downtime during World Cup?
― Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:01 (one year ago) link
That seems plausible?I think in terms of broader discourse Twitter served its purpose. Everything is so siloed now, maybe it won’t be so bad for some other less granular wannabe public forum to replace it. Unless the replacement really is some chimera of WeChat, Instagram and Parler.

twitter going down is a bad thingIn the short term yes no argument. But does social media have to be so market-oriented? Is that just a completely naive framework?
