is that bad?

The Bankruptcy of the Planet of the Apes (PBKR), Wednesday, 16 November 2022 22:13 (one year ago) link

eh, apologies, the details of how twitter does sms 2fa mean it's difficult to spoof a number, i.e. this is bad but it's not very bad.

Ok, it's been pointed out to me that using short codes for this should make it much harder to spoof - they're routed inside the carrier, and the carrier already knows your number

guys hear me out

now that Musk has driven the value of Twitter into the dumper, what if Twitter users did a massive global GoFundMe and bought him out and ran it as a cooperative, like, I dunno, the Green Bay Packers

Still the best.

quite a good 48hrs or so:

- "cooking food for people is a violation of consent"
- "poor people should stop doing so much dry cleaning and Peloton"
- "If you invite me to an event with food I'm calling the police"

Time for RSS to make a big comeback

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Friday, 18 November 2022 00:50 (one year ago) link

Just can’t turn away from the trainwreck. If only NYT had a Twitter collapse meter I could watch to know pseudo-objectively how close we’re getting to impact. Are bookies taking odds on when it will happen? I guess “website total collapse” would have to be very clearly defined if so.

RSS would be awesome if A) anyone websites still used it and B) there were options for shitposting (I am recovering to be clear). I still was regularly using the Netvibes RSS client within the past couple of years but it seems like even over that span the popularity of RSS has seriously waned.

what's great is that in the free marketplace of ideas, the competition to replace twitter is inevitably going to lead to innovation and a better communications product for us all

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Friday, 18 November 2022 00:57 (one year ago) link

There should be an ILX template to just post our own posts as tweets. For the sake of nostalgia.

Is there a bet available in betting markets for predicting times of system disruption/ length of downtime during World Cup?

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:01 (one year ago) link

That seems plausible?

I think in terms of broader discourse Twitter served its purpose. Everything is so siloed now, maybe it won’t be so bad for some other less granular wannabe public forum to replace it.

Unless the replacement really is some chimera of WeChat, Instagram and Parler.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:03 (one year ago) link

Tons of places still use RSS, I am drowning in articles lol. Including tumblr for your shitpost-reading needs.

really appreciate that twitter didn't really *want* to sell to him, but had a fiduciary duty to its shareholders to accept such a wildly overpriced bid, resulting in the destruction of everything. capitalism!

twitter going down is a bad thing

In the short term yes no argument. But does social media have to be so market-oriented? Is that just a completely naive framework?

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:22 (one year ago) link

it's going to be hard to build something up like that again that everyone buys into to be heard.

Best thing Twitter did for the world in general was to allow anyone to yell directly at rich and powerful people, which drove many of them insane, including the richest guy on earth

Karl Malone, Friday, 18 November 2022 01:33 (one year ago) link

xxxp "more bad than good" - I guess it depends on what your experience was on twitter

I really liked hearing from the people I loved and followed!

Sure, there were a lot examples of "so-and-so you followed liked this tweet" that I found repulsive, or responses to someone evil whose original tweet I wish I'd never seen, but overall it has been a rewarding experience for me

Dan S, Friday, 18 November 2022 01:36 (one year ago) link

i left twitter in october 2015 and my life has been great except for when people remind me of or direct me to tweets. rest in piss

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:38 (one year ago) link

Hi Brad

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:38 (one year ago) link

i agree with you except i have never enjoyed it. i also fucking loathe the twitterspeak argot that became default conversational tone on ilx during its reign.

no that part is good

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:46 (one year ago) link

You all sound like you were bad at Twitter. I enjoyed my (admittedly highly curated) experience there greatly, made tons of valuable professional connections, and read lots of funny jokes about Danzig and Rob Zombie and interesting articles (and bought books) that people I know wrote that I might not have found out about any other way.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 18 November 2022 01:48 (one year ago) link

i think the best thing you can say about it is that it made the world a worse place by accident, unlike facebook, which did it deliberately.
