he seems to be really bitter and jaded in his performances as of late. dane cook plays "roman polanski" in windy city heat. lol

chaki, Tuesday, 25 December 2007 00:50 (sixteen years ago) link

i just rewatched the SXSW clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UYh8RYMbp4

and it doesn't seem so bad this time. i actually like the fact that once he realizes he's not exactly preaching to the choir, but rather probably a bunch of frat fuxx, he bails.

i saw this fucking guy in a trailer and he seems awful. obviously in five years when he's done a movie with peter weir or ang lee or whatever future-gershy will revive this and laugh at me.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:42 (sixteen years ago) link

ang lee's next movie- "Wilde", starring dane muthafucking cook. Five Stars, The Observer.

darraghmac, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

these "record breaking" stand up sets are not impressive at all.

chaki, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

that zach g clip upthread looks really old (no beard!)?

Jordan, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

anything i thought it was funny. sorta reminds me of michael showalter's catskills comedian bit in wet hot american summer.

Jordan, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think Cook is great shakes either but I've listened to plenty of his stuff in my brother's car and I think he has a lot more going for him than many here credit him with (He really IS funny sometimes). I still prefer Patton Oswalt or even David Cross when he decides to be funny and not whiny, but honestly guys like Bill Maher and Lewis Black could die in a horrible elevator accident and that would be less of a loss to funny than if Dane Cook missed one show after coming down with a cold.

Also, this may be setting the bar low, but during my viewing of the most recent Comic Relief, Dane Cook was the only one who made me laugh out loud.

New breed of bad comics (Dane Cook, Carrot Top, Sinbad) not as bad as old breed (Bob Hope).

Joan Rivers was / is an amazing and ground breaking standup comedian.

New breed of bad comics (Dane Cook, Carrot Top, Sinbad) - Perhaps you weren't watching cable television in the 80's..

Pillbox, Saturday, 5 January 2008 01:48 (sixteen years ago) link

ah sinbad, a refreshing new breed of comedian. finally.

New School = 80s comedy-club revival to present.

OK, I'm half covering my ass.

Somewhere there's a message board where good-looking, optimistic, genuine Dane Cook fans are making fun of jaded, hyper-aware, depressing people like us.

That message board is called the parking lot of a Checkers.

Dane Cook: Mario Cantone is so gay, that when gay people walk down the street and see him, they're like, "Fag".

his jokes have decent premises but the actual jokes are terrible and his persona is terrible - i honestly believe that he makes his fans feel okay about being misogynist whether he intends to or not

I'm with Jordan, actually -- that video makes him look like his show is going to be funny. Nobody really cares about bad taste. Bad taste is just in-the-know. And whatever, it all lives or dies on the punchline, and the dude has no punchlines. He's not funny. Period.

Brundlefly (kenan), Friday, 12 June 2009 07:55 (fourteen years ago) link

"what is it about bookstores that makes people think they can lay on the fucking ground?" <- i think this is a good premise for a joke - gaffigan or galifinakis could do something with this - but there's just nothing good from him after that

let free dom ring (J0rdan S.), Friday, 12 June 2009 08:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I think you have to have been that guy in the bookstore to really make a good joke out of it.

Brundlefly (kenan), Friday, 12 June 2009 08:09 (fourteen years ago) link

Or at least empathize with him. Hate is never pretty, as they say, but it can be very funny. But you have to make yourself the victim of the hate and also take the audience along with you. It's tricky and it's not easy.
