fwiw it was only below where it needed to be since musk tried to destroy the company during 2022. net income was positive in every quarter since 2017 except Q2 2020 and the last two. it was a profitable business! except for one quarter when the world stopped, and two quarters when the business was paralyzed by musk. room to improve? sure. but it wasn't a loss-making business until he started fucking with it.

The second post here, about Platformer deplatforming itself from Twitter (not entirely, but mostly) seems pretty otm to me. (The War on Bots post also good and telling.)
https://www.platformer.news/p/how-elon-botched-his-war-on-bots
Meanwhile, Musk’s full-throated embrace of the conservative mainstream has actively degraded Twitter as a news source. Because he is the platform’s CEO, its most-followed user, and topic No. 1 nearly every day there now, opinions about Musk now dominate the timeline. (Candidly, Zoe and I have both contributed to and benefited from this phenomenon.)
I imagine all this is a lot of fun for Musk, and maybe even worth the $44 billion he overpaid for it. But it can be hell for anyone who showed up to talk sports, tech, entertainment, or anything else.
... Now, awaiting Musk’s latest tweets, I find myself anxious that one of his former employees could be physically assaulted or worse over what the CEO is posting. I don’t know how, in that environment, to make little jokes about Google’s latest failed messaging app, or bad PR pitches, or any of the other bits I have been doing on Twitter forever. I don’t know how to pretend that what is happening is not actually happening. I don’t want to provide, even in the smallest of ways, a respectable backdrop against which hate speech against my fellow LGBTQ people, or Black or Jewish or any other people, can flourish.

god the way he handled getting booed was so fucking pathetic. first banning anyone who posted the video on Twitter, then claiming that 90% of the people there were actually cheering, then having Bari Weiss drop "the Twitter files part 5" in the middle of the day, then deleting the 90% tweet, then claiming he actually couldn't talk because there was a fight in the audience, even though Chappelle was talking the entire time

NEW: Twitter currently does not have admin access to some of its GitHub repos. These repos contain Twitter source code (much of it is open source; some is not). This includes code for companies Twitter acquired, like Smyte. 1/— Zoë Schiffer (@ZoeSchiffer) December 13, 2022

in my mind i demarcate old twitter and current twitter by when tweets started getting way more retweets/favs than 1k. in the old days, having a 1k retweet / 1k liked tweet was a pretty big deal. tweets just didn't do numbers, everybody had a chronological timeline, everybody was pretty silo'd to only the accounts they followed and only got exposure to new accounts through retweets. i think you could check for the most popular tweets on favstar, and there weren't really very many tweets that were able to do 10k plus engagements.
at some point twitter introduced the algorithmic timeline and also started putting tweets liked by the people you follow into your timeline randomly. i kind of hated it but no question that seemed to exponentiate user engagement and i associate twitter's current iteration with all the stuff they've done to increase engagement, make sure you're looking at stuff outside your bubble.
anyway hopefully all those engagement stims are breaking and twitter will itself collapse and sink into the ocean.
