im sure anyone who knows a lil about tracking crypto transactions could figure out if those were legit sales pretty easily, the trump org is not known for its rigor, in fact i the info is prob already on twitter

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:27 (one year ago) link

i might be completely misunderstanding the trading offers and stuff. i try not to dabble too much in crypto these days because i don't like the sensation of turds squeezing between my teeth and down my esophagus

You don't think there are at least 45,000 morons in the USA?

who know how to buy NFTs and are willing to spend $99 to do so? idk just look at the NFT market this year practically nobody is buying them

frogbs, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:29 (one year ago) link

I mean it's really a pretty brilliant scam: I have 5,000 limited edition piece of shit jpegs for sale @ $100 a pop. Whoooops, they all just 'sold out' and are even more valuable! And now all of the shitty jpegs that I totally sold to other people and totally didn't just keep for myself are available at inflated prices on the secondary market. And if you have a long history of fraudulent behavior without ever having suffered punishment sufficient enough to do you any harm whatsoever, why would you even hesitate?

Beautiful Bean Footage Fetishist (Old Lunch), Friday, 16 December 2022 16:30 (one year ago) link

well he does need someone to actually buy them at some point

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:33 (one year ago) link

more likely they sold zero of them and then just bought them up to save face

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:33 (one year ago) link

Here's the Opensea wallet of the person who bought 1,000 Trump NFTs. No previous activity before (though it's trivial to set up a new wallet). Major collection. This is how generational wealth is built.https://t.co/kiHL7r5naf pic.twitter.com/CPyqc0DXHa

Trump might be an exception as far as the NFT market goes. He's probably the most famous celebrity to put out an NFT, I'd think? I could totally see there being a lot of initial demand for these fucking things.

jmm, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:37 (one year ago) link

idk trumps hardcore fans are more buying gold coins off fox news types than digital art investors, asking them to go through the process of buying one of these things is a lot

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:40 (one year ago) link

xps

honestly, i don't know how difficult it is to fake all these transactions. but it would seem that you'd have to at least have thousands of fake wallets?

if they did, it was a pretty complicated scheme with thousands of fake buyers. like, on that shitpic i posted just above, there are dozens of offers from different accounts on it, already. here's one of the accounts that's made an offer - https://opensea.io/techboss - techboss has 6 NFTs and has been on opensea since oct 2021.

again, beats me, maybe it's easy to create a bunch of fake accounts to make it look like a bunch of different people actually bought them. but if they did, then it seems like an unusual level of competence for either trump or the grifters to make these accounts that look like they've had authentic shitty taste in investments for over a year now

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:42 (one year ago) link

it would be not very hard to do it if you wanted to, wash trading is basically what nfts are for, whether wanted to or not who knows, maybe they sold some and bought the rest idk

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:43 (one year ago) link

assuming that theres scamming going on with nfts is a very safe bet tho

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:44 (one year ago) link

i mean who did the technical part of making the nfts probably an established nft entity aka a scammer

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:47 (one year ago) link

definitely wouldn't surprise me if that's the case. the chances of "trump nfts were a money laundering scheme" happening is very high and approaches 100% in the long-term

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2022 16:51 (one year ago) link

trump nfts were a money laundering scheme requires no scare quotes, just a fact

its not hard for me to believe that there are plenty of shady international pols & oligarchs eager for a simple way to pass along a 7-figure bribe to the trump org

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Friday, 16 December 2022 17:22 (one year ago) link

my guess would be the fraud is all on the nft guys side, trump org prob played it straight its just not their area of expertise

lag∞n, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:26 (one year ago) link

the confounding factor here is that it's probably both. i believe there are at _least_ 45,000 people who would be more than happy to give donald trump $99 for tacky photoshops, and also that there are many people who can use this as a vehicle for fraud. the former group provide very good cover for the latter.

in a somewhat tortuous way, it reminds me of the meadows texts that came out recently and also televangelists and the people who give money to them, where it's unsettling to see so many people in that orbit appearing to legitimately believe that the total bullshit. whether they actually believe it or not, as long as they give the appearance of a true believer they provide the cover to the ones doing the crimes

Karl Malone, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:32 (one year ago) link

Took me a moment to realise Trump is not wedgie-ing himself in that gold-tinted pic above.

nashwan, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:35 (one year ago) link

is it reasonable to think that a perhaps not insignificant percentage of the cards were purchased as gag gifts?

"Generational wealth" LOL

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Friday, 16 December 2022 17:47 (one year ago) link

if this was a legitimate sell-out, you know that Series II is being created right now... you gotta keep grifting until the marks move on

Andy the Grasshopper, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:49 (one year ago) link

sure but they're $99, that's kind of a big chunk of change for most people

I mean look I agree with KM there are a lot of morons out there willing to chuck money at Trump I'm just saying I have a hard time believing very many of them are interested in NFTs or even know what they are. and it's not like he doesn't have every conceivable type of merchandise out there already

however one thing I am learning via the discussion on this is that there do seem to be at least some people who bought these without knowing what they really were and are now tweeting at the official account wondering "how do I access this thing"

frogbs, Friday, 16 December 2022 17:49 (one year ago) link

As someone pointed out, the entire collection is worth less than $4.5 million. Will it appreciate? Doubtful. This is hardly the stuff of "generational wealth."

holy shit there's one of him wearing a yarmulke at the Wailing Wall:

Also wanna point out it’s a pretty common Republican tactic to use donor money to buy thousands of copies of their own books so idiots like Rubio and Don Jr. can be “best selling authors”. Just saying this shit is already in the playbook

It's interesting to see the slight variations to make each one 'exclusive'.. a little change in the background, a camo cap instead of red, etc. I almost wonder if they used some kind of AI to make every possible variation of every single pose:

the super saiyan trick

I'm guessing one of the people buying the max was Don Jr. trying to win that one-on-one dinner with Dad

They should sell Mr. Potato Head Trumps that you could swap out limbs and outfits for.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 16 December 2022 19:00 (one year ago) link

They should reboot the "Ernest Goes to ... " movies with Trump. Was there an "Ernest goes to Washington"?

Action Jackson Trump

The AI has a slimming effect

It's also embiggened his hands!

Reportedly "the Jan. 6 committee will vote Monday on a subcommittee recommendation to refer *at least* three criminal charges against Trump — including for USC 2383, insurrection. Two others: 1512c obstruction and 371 conspiracy to defraud the US."

Also: "House Ways and Means announces closed meeting next week where they are expected to discuss — for the first time — Trump’s tax returns that they have obtained after years of court battles. It’s unclear how the committee plans to handle it."

The correct thing to do would be for ways and means to issue the tax returns as NFTs.

Um, just catching up, 45,000 is not by any means a large number in pretty much any context when it comes to # people (esp since the 45 virus is to an extent worldwide, not US only)?

That x people should do a specific daft thing is surely only remarkable if x has I dunno seven digits or more, maybe eight?

I mean (and I choose this team at complete random) the Lansing Lugnuts at the high-A level of Minor League Baseball: how many unique spectators (ie not counting repeats) do they draw in the course of a season? I have no idea, but baulking at 45K doing a Dumb Thing seems somewhat in need of calibration.

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 17 December 2022 14:05 (one year ago) link

I see it could come across that way: No shade intended at the Lugnuts!

anatol_merklich, Saturday, 17 December 2022 14:07 (one year ago) link

Gonna have to push back as no one chooses Lugnuts at complete random! This has been proven by probability science. Also, everyone who attends Lugnuts games did a fantastic job, I wish I were there with them at every game, let’s go Nuts

I bow to your greater sagacity and will carefully reconsider my positions, users Karl Malone and lag∞n. I have also acquired an otherwise unexplainable urge to travel to Michigan, United States of America, for the viewing of non-superhero-level baseball. This is a thing I have never actually seen.
