My complaint with "my brother in Christ" online meme language (whether derived from different cultures/subcultures or simply being very online) is that it rapidly starts to feel algorithmic rather than like authentic human communication - "this is what I say to get more likes on my tweets/posts."

yeah appropriation is fraught because it happens lots of ways. There are objectionable and actively harmful forms of it. But a lot of culture is not one-way, it's an exchange of ideas. So some level of appropriation or absorption is just kind of inevitable especially in a diverse population. Those of us who like living in cities partly like them because of the cultural intersections that happen there, it's interesting when different ideas and experiences come together. There are also power imbalances in a lot of those intersections, and you have to be aware of them. So I think appropriation in the bad sense is kind of a know-it-when-you-see-it thing. Iggy Azalea, say.
