I shouldn’t be surprised, but very disheartening to see Glinner has been unbanned and is immediately posting transphobic bile

As with his writing for the daily heil if you looked at his steez pre hate crusade you might naively assume there would have to be at least *some* introspection about exactly who is on his side these days

the charm of being a subversive ban evader and truth-speaker kind of wears off when your account’s reinstated and the owner of the company is voicing the same repellent views

Huh, never noticed that before. Seems weird that some of the most-read threads in the past 5 minutes haven't been updated in years. I guess ILX gets a fair bit of traffic from search results.

I kind of wondered how they’re defining “views” there and whether it’s actual users or just anytime the tweet’s marked deliveredmaybe the tweet was viewed multiple times by the advertising algorithm

cool cool cool, just no bottom with this fucker
Dec 23 (Reuters) - Twitter Inc removed a feature in the past few days that promoted suicide prevention hotlines and other safety resources to users looking up certain content, according to two people familiar with the matter who said it was ordered by new owner Elon Musk. The removal of the feature, known as #ThereIsHelp, has not been previously reported. It had shown at the top of specific searches contacts for support organizations in many countries related to mental health, HIV, vaccines, child sexual exploitation, COVID-19, gender-based violence, natural disasters and freedom of expression. Its elimination could add to concerns about the well-being of vulnerable users on Twitter. Musk has said that impressions, or views, of harmful content are declining since he took over in October and has tweeted graphs showing a downward trend, even as researchers and civil rights groups have tracked an increase in tweets with racial slurs and other hateful content.Twitter and Musk did not respond to requests for comment on the removal of the feature.

I have been forced out on my laptop and can't log back in, but it's still working on my phone for the moment. If it's over, it's over. I find that my enthusiasm for Mastodon, mild at best, has waned sharply ...mostly because all anybody seems to do there is talk about Twitter or call everyone else racist and ableist.

I can’t log in at all on the web site now, just getting an error message. Mastodon follows Reddit’s primary model of decentralized, volunteer moderation if I’m not mistaken. It’s the libertarian pipe dream but it has a proven history of failure on Reddit, it’s not scalable. I’ll gladly accept the anti-discriminatory self-righteousness if that’s the worst of it as long as there’s some actual community engaged in decent quality discussion of music, science, politics etc. My concern as with Reddit is that decentralized moderation is a formula for takeover by bad-faith actors if it becomes attractive enough to them.

similar but not quite the same as reddit which is still much more centralised by comparison (in that there is a central admin team at all) - moderation is up to the owners of each mastodon instance & so if there's another instance that's say, full of nazis, then other instances will defederate from them but then you run into all sorts of issues with who's federated with who and having to play whack-a-mole with bad instances and typical forum mod petty tyrant stuff

I've gotten some weird glitches and notices today — had to turn to my notifications back on even though I didn't turn them off, had a blue bar pop up at one point saying "Something's gone wrong." Probably related to whatever "backend" thing Elon says he cleared out.
