why do you guys talk about literary clusterfucks on the twitter thread?

budo jeru, Monday, 9 January 2023 07:39 (one year ago) link

Introducing 4000 character tweets might be the move that actually kills Twitter. There are two dozen people in the world who want that and they all read each others’ 1/89 tweet threads anyway.

Will be genuinely surprised if they ship that anything like on the schedule he claims. The changes required are enormous.

yes, but if you post it on Twitter you will be banned

he's trying to make Twitter a competitor to YouTube and Wordpress (??), which again begs the question of what exactly he thinks Twitter is and why he thinks people use it. what he's doing here is Bad Software Design 101, I'd say "this might actually kill Twitter" but it's Elon so it'll probably just never happen

frogbs, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:02 (one year ago) link

wonder if the long tweets with have formatting available or if itll just be a really long tweet i hope its just a long tweet thats funnier

lag∞n, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:07 (one year ago) link

also if they just show the whole thing on the timeline

lag∞n, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:08 (one year ago) link

I think once your tweet goes beyond 280 characters you should lose the ability to punctuate or insert line breaks. If you're gonna type 4000 characters it's gonna appear in a solid block of text.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 9 January 2023 16:30 (one year ago) link

Just noticed a load of yellow/gold ticks on official accounts. Are they gonna start trying to charge $80 for those at some point or what?

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 9 January 2023 16:53 (one year ago) link

gold ticks are for official business accounts

(so yes, they may well start charging more)

NYTimes airhead @ezraklein:

"Clean, abundant energy is the foundation on which a more equal, just and humane world can be built."

Two points:

1. Wind power made the trans-Atlantic slave trade possible.

2. Modern 'clean' energy has been a disaster. https://t.co/NczKWIrPwG

looking at a world in which the 1% use a thousand times more energy than the average person: if we can just a get lil more of this stuff surely everyone will become a yuppie

Freemium social media.

would be great if in three months Twitter looks like Friendster after it was turned from a social media site into an incomprehensibly overstuffed gaming platform, or whatever it was by the 2010s.

hopefully this is a bug

I kept jokingly telling people on Twitter not to mention the third-party apps to Elon because I honestly think he didn’t understand they exist! This might be what happens when someone finally explained to him that they do :(

Tweetdeck still seems to work thank goodness (and my timeline on the iOS client remains chronological.)
