that’s how I’ve been viewing twitter for years w/tweetbot

Lol I had no idea that option was on the table. Knew it was too good to be true that the cunt had come up with something useful.

I'm a very, very light user of Twitter (I've barely posted anything since 2019), but I don't think I know what ppl mean by ads? I don't think I ever see any? Nothing in my "Following" feed that is being pushed at me as far as I can tell.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 16 January 2023 14:54 (one year ago) link
there are fewer ads right now because no one’s paying for them, but I was seeing an ad every 50 - 100 tweets on the web yesterday

Some great stuff in that auction. Tables! Chairs! Espresso machines! N95 masks! Would bid if I were in SF.

there was a decent article on the history of twitter apps but the short version is:twitter predates apps, the following-only chronological timeline was the former default, several iOS apps popped up (Twitterific first iirc?) and twitter only had an official app after they bought Tweetie in 2010. I think algorithmic scroll was added around the same time period, although I think it was later. The official app got it, other apps maintained the following/chronological view. Note that @mentions, retweets, referring to posts as “tweets,” and a handful of other things were all adopted from the community and rolled into the site as features over several years
― mh, Monday, 16 January 2023 15:11 (one year ago) link
xp the unopened thunderbolt 3 docks are still good imo!it’s funny because everything that’s used is starting around $25 and nearly everything that’s unopened and priced higher is for employee onboarding. modular work area furniture in a box, laptop docks, decent power strips
― mh, Monday, 16 January 2023 15:14 (one year ago) link
Even without a third-party app, you could always avoid the algorithmic timeline in the Twitter app by tapping the little sparkly icon at the top to switch to Latest.
― jaymc, Monday, 16 January 2023 15:20 (one year ago) link
oh, and my twitter “hack” of the day: if you go to the site on iOS and do the “add to home screen” action so you get it as a faux-app, it appears to keep you stuck on whichever timeline you pick and probably phones home less than the native appxp it doesn’t stick on latest, though, does it?
― mh, Monday, 16 January 2023 15:22 (one year ago) link
I think if you hadn't logged on in a while it would automatically switch you back to Home (algorithmic), but I never had that problem.
― jaymc, Monday, 16 January 2023 15:23 (one year ago) link
^^same. i think i pressed the little sparkly follow/recommended button at the top maybe 10 times over several years. otherwise it was on follow mode
― Karl Malone, Monday, 16 January 2023 15:56 (one year ago) link
Yes it generally stuck to latest for me, however there were times when even that would include recommended tweets that I did not follow.

surprising no one, trump is coming back to twitter. he's also petitioning facebook to let him back on there.

Another Trump confidant who also didn’t want to be identified speaking about conversations with him said that Trump has sought input for weeks about hopping back on Twitter and that his campaign advisers have also workshopped ideas for his first tweet.

Seeing a much higher proportion of paid blue checks than normal now. I guess it could be random but it feels like part of the creeping push of unwanted recommendations. I’d managed to filter out everything not directly related to my follower list for a while but lately that seems impossible.

I went back, for a bit. Then I got banned, for wishing ill on a Tory MP who was gloating about immigrants dying in the sea. Then I got back on again, and I'm hating it, and I feel complicit. Basically my plan is to stay off it unless I have an article or project to promote on it. It's a miserable place. It was before Elon took it over but now it's just miserable to such a vast degree, like Sideshow Bob stepping on rakes for all eternity, but still somehow carrying on.

feel like there was an explosion of enthusiasm for twitter amongst the worst people in the world when elon took over but its pretty much gone back to normal now which makes sense like if you didnt want to be there before knowing that elon is in charge is only going to go so far
― lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:50 (one year ago) link
should say that i always use the chronological (currently "following" used to be "latest" before that was just the only option) timeline so whatever changes happen there i never see them
― lag∞n, Thursday, 19 January 2023 17:52 (one year ago) link
i suspect this elon experiment wont last and twitter will have some faceless private equity bosses before long, if it doesnt just go out of business altogether which seem pretty unlikely but not totally impossible

not xp - you personally? nothing. "you" in the larger sense is anybody utilizing the 44b playground which is revenue. i dunno, that seems purposely disingenuous along the lines of "what exactly is r kelly getting from me listening to him on spotify"

advertisers bailed, his fortune is tied up in tesla stock which is dropping daily, he didn’t create the site/app/whatever and while he’s a creepy worm, people attribute all kinds of things to him (both positive and negative) that he has nothing to do withfor personal and work reasons I use software products and services by companies who have announced layoffs exceeding those he did at twitter by a large marginI guess if me leaving teaches the world or one man that it’s bad to be a disgusting person publicly — when many are as bad or worse but keep their mouths shut — then…
