my brother and I often quote the extra playing the dad who screams "ya gotta TAG him DUMMYYYYY" in Bad News Bears all the time.

and often go around singing the Tony Clifton rendition of "Volare" from Man on the Moon.

and speaking of Super Troopers, I often say "littering ANNNND" and my friend reminds me that Super Troopers isn't funny (but it is)

Super Troopers is full of lines like that..."I don't want a large Farva"

The original tv version of Up The Junction was on BBC last night and seemed to be full of them. Seemed like whoever wrote the dialogue lifted comments from overheard conversation and put them in actors mouths.

Xp I think Verhoeven satirised the gung ho aspects of 50s sci fi. Haven't read the original book so can't say how bad it is for that.
But do think there is a lot of intentional humour in the film. Not sure to what extent the politics reflect Verhoeven's own, I don't think it's like a Red Dawn or something.

Super Troopers is Verhoeven’s best satire for sure

five months pass...

on It's Always Sunny there's a scene where they see a quack doctor named "Dr. Jinx" who is, for some reason, played by P. Diddy. when they walk into his house "The Right Stuff" by New Kids on the Block is playing loudly. One of them describes their symptoms and he goes "I got something that will make you feel better". and then he picks up a bass and starts playing "The Right Stuff"

I saw The Jerk when it was new, and was the only one in the theater laughing uproariously to the "cosmetologist" non sequitur. Amazed to find the clip on youtube.

That’s awesome, thanks! Had no recollection of it. Sorry if I’m literal-minded, but is it really a non sequitur?

I thought that as soon as I posted it. It's "a conclusion or statement that does not logically follow from the previous statement," except that it does in Steve's mind, it's just a conflation of meanings. So I dunno...

Non sequiturs can be responses that have nothing to do with the conversation or flawed conclusions “based” on what preceded them.

So yes, I think so.

Oh, okay, didn’t know the second part. TIL…

from Daddy's Dyin, Who's got the Will?

I totally posted a non-non sequitur, it just becomes a non sequitur when it appears in my head unbidden

There's an SCTV sketch about an expensive French restaurant where celebrity gourmands, such as Orson Welles, go to have their most elaborate culinary fantasies realized; wherein the maitre-d' makes the bilingual non-pun "Mr. Welles likes his coq-au-vin prepared with real cocoa".

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 29 June 2023 00:20 (ten months ago) link

That joke was also in a Three's Company episode, where Chrissy made dinner and Jack (who was a cook) says "That's the first time I've had coq-au-vin made with cocoa."
