I still don't get Facebook. I can't find anyone I know. Why is it so inconvenient? How did all these people on Facebook find everyone they know and even people they don't know? I'm eating chewy candy shaped as wedges of fruit.

mostly you just let it search for people in your email contacts list & see who it coughs up no?

facebook is mostly good for scrabble imo.

There's several dozen groups called I Love Music now, so not so easy. Is there any way to identify the real one? What's the graphic used, type and number of members right now?

The secret is you are in college, and have been on since it was .edu only, and pretty much get what it does.

I mean, is it really relevant to other people? I'm more or less dependent on it nowadays but for those that aren't already really into it, what's the point?

I hate trying to get my friends to join my Rock Legends app as a groupie; but how else am I going to become a rock legend?

nine months pass...

there seems to a trend of people linking ilx threads from their facebook status updates. is it just me who is kinda not into that? perfectly prepared for the answer to be "yeah dude it's just you," there are plenty of questions I have about stuff which can accurately be answered "yeah that sounds like more your deal than anybody's problem"

im not into that

try to avoid participating in discussions that might be construed as interesting is the best strategy I guess

woah so not into that

xp mind you idk if i ever even joined an ilx facebook group. i am not sure i am cool with mark zuckerberg knowing i am on ilx, i feel like that is not information i would trust him with.

naglpuss (c sharp major), Monday, 24 May 2010 20:07 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't like the idea, either.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 24 May 2010 20:09 (thirteen years ago) link

I keep ilx and facebook as entirely separate worlds. Like, there are so many facebook.friends who are like, obligatorily involved in my life. If I posted an ilx facebook status update, or commented on someone's ilxor fb status update, I'd be opening the ilxor door to people who I'd much.rather just know as IRL people.

kkvgz, Monday, 24 May 2010 20:31 (thirteen years ago) link

hmmm yeah i don't like it...didn't know that was happening.

obvs cant assume that everybody's fb friend demographics or privacy settings are same as mine, but cant assume they're not either.

kkvgz, Monday, 24 May 2010 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

i also would prefer these worlds not collide

hobbes, Monday, 24 May 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I'd add ilxors as friends, especially ones I've met, but that isn't exactly a running concern so far. I'd feel weird linking to here unless it's some sort of commentary thread that could stand on its own, without really acknowledging that this is a site I post on and do not just browse.

not at all saying that
a) i'm anything but a semi-lurker
b) anything i post is of interest to anybody

but i wouldn't feel that good if people were (without my knowledge) discussing on facebook something i said on ilx

i guess others would agree?

how do i promote a party on facebook? do i already have to have a personal facebook page? i've setup an artist page but can't see any way of actually inviting people or adding friends

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 16:35 (thirteen years ago) link

this thing is bullshit. myspace was so much better for this type of thing

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 16:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Create an event, invite people to event, profit.

turtles all the way down (mh), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

put the details and a link to the event in a status update of your page so it appears on all the fans feed.

make the event public so all the invited people who are attending have it show up on their news feed for their friends to see.

also allow others to invite friends.

much better promotion than you could ever ask for on myspace.

seems a bit late in the day for getting a facebook page tbh

不合作的方式 (r1o natsume), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 22:11 (thirteen years ago) link

i've setup an artist page

i didn't know you could do that without a personal page.

i don't see why you can't put in status updates on your artist page for fans to see, if you have an artist page.

DMB is Dave Matthews Band? Are they really that popular amongst American students?

Moka, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 22:19 (thirteen years ago) link

not any more. remember, that was 5 years ago.

i suspect that if the Pulse thing were still going, stuff would be a lot more interesting now? tho with some obvious things like LADY GAGA etc.

I think the life-death cycle for Facebook is finally kicking in (a la Friendster and MySpace)... Already know a half-dozen or so people who've cancelled their FB account. No reason other than they're just bored with it.

Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 22 July 2010 01:10 (thirteen years ago) link

people were canceling their FB accounts two/three years ago two. I don't think FB is going the way of Myspace or Friendster any time soon - Friendster was run ridiculously as a business, Myspace didn't really ever get the grown-up-world presence that FB has. The real FB killer is Twitter, and the two have integrated pretty comfortably

imo

While I kinda understand the above view, I also find some of it a tad amusing, at least in the context of the threads I post on and look at here, and my FB friends. Somehow, I do not think that me putting an ilx Chitlin Circuit Soul posting (that is currently read by 3 people maybe) or a Latin or Global Music one on my FB page is gonna cause me embarrassment or bring 'uncool' FB people here. Actually those ILX threads could use a few more people posting. Maybe the rap goons like having only 5 or 6 people posting on that rolling thread?

"Ghostface Gorilla Hood"

no info on those pages and I am the first person to "like" them, because I am a sucker.

wtf how did they know?

Good that they finally did that. Seemed like the logical move.

I'm guessing my groups will basically break down into:

Family
Family + friends I actually like
Everyone else
