how much would you be willing to pay to demonstrate your fundamental misunderstanding of the platform you're on?

So far Musk has paid most of his money and all of his dignity, so...

SCOOP: Elon has emailed staff following the Twitter outage.

“Please pause for now on new feature development in favor of maximizing system stability and robustness, especially with the Super Bowl coming up.”

I can’t like a tweet anymore, is that normal? Not joking, I’ve been trying all day and I can no longer like.

All going great over there!

The San Francisco headquarters, whose landlord has sued Twitter for nonpayment of rent, has a melancholy air. When people pass each other in the halls, we’re told that the standard greeting is “where are you interviewing?” and “where do you have offers?” The eighth floor is still stocked with beds, and employees have to reserve them in advance.

“Most weeknights, they are fully booked,” another current employee said.

The perks that made Twitter an attractive place to work pre-Musk have been eradicated. Food at the office? “Sucks — and now we have to pay for it. And, I know this sounds petty, but they appear to have obtained the absolute worst coffee vendors on earth.”

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 February 2023 20:41 (one year ago) link

I maybe mentioned way upthread but I was in the headquarters once pre-pandemic for a small gathering (perhaps an awards ceremony?) of local tech groups working in outreach to those without access and the like -- met and chatted with Brewster Kahle for a bit, that was kinda fun -- and it was a pretty cozy setup in the meeting area we were at some floors up: well stocked bar, comfy seats inside and out, good vibes. My guess is the place is completely rotted and dusty at best now.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 9 February 2023 20:44 (one year ago) link

love this tidbit

In case you need proof that view counts on Twitter aren’t accurate:

I have a locked, private account with ZERO followers for reporting purposes. I just posted these two tweets. Check the view counts. One tweet I posted on my private acct less than 1 min ago already has 59 views pic.twitter.com/cNVrRWCZ4u

I don’t get that from the article, I think it makes its point about what happens to radicalised people fairly well.

crafting your social persona for years among the dorks who frequent the comment section on beetbort only to take the show on the road (twitter is the road) when the opportunity presents itself isn't exactly a pattern foreign to large swaths of people on the internet

catturd2 is sad and lame so reading about him and his whole scene might make one a lil sad

leaning that hard into an intentionally dumb brand makes him memorable

you can list a bunch of right wing doofuses and eventually I'm not going to remember who did what, like are they the angry virgin guy who runs a republican student org or some thiel-adjacent shitbag who tries to make things more libertarian? who knows. cat turd? we know which guy that is

remember joe the plumber he was concerned about the taxes he would pay when he became rich

lag∞n, Friday, 10 February 2023 16:24 (one year ago) link

I think he flamed out in 2014 when he wrote an open letter to the families of the Isla Vista victims that said, "Your dead kids don't trump my rights."

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Friday, 10 February 2023 16:29 (one year ago) link

yeah but look at the verb he used -- prescient!

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 10 February 2023 16:33 (one year ago) link

yea I think the thing cat turd gets, or maybe was lucky enough to stumble into, is the fact that modern day conservatism is anchored around the idea of feigning total idiocy towards everything. present yourself as the stupidest person alive and you're free to say whatever you want and no one will hold you to task when you're constantly wrong. who's even gonna argue with a dude who posts poop jokes all day? I think Tucker understands this, MTG and Bobo certainly do, probably Trump as well. it's the folks who try to have some sort of consistent ideology or actually try to use logic to prove their points who are constantly getting dunked on. as the article mentions with Kinzinger if you're a Republican who tries to acknowledge basic reality you wind up out of the party real fast.

frogbs, Friday, 10 February 2023 16:40 (one year ago) link

I think this began with Limbaugh--who was rarely fact-checked or challenged in his most influential period--and when he was he just called you a moron and laughed at you.

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Friday, 10 February 2023 16:51 (one year ago) link

Trump does love the poorly educated, iirc.

I said it years ago, we're living in a real life version of one of those snobs vs. slobs comedies. We're Dean Wormer, and the slobs are winning.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 10 February 2023 17:09 (one year ago) link

imo people hate when things seem publicly intellectualized whether they're actually difficult concepts or not

our version of tall poppy syndrome is specifically for people who "act smart"

mh, Friday, 10 February 2023 17:47 (one year ago) link

to me that's one of the worst things about Trump as president, his whole shtick was that everything was easy, like my first day in office all the immigrants are gone, I'm gonna fix crime, you'll have the best healthcare, your taxes will be lower, we will have the cleanest air, bing bong bing bong so simple. no plan just some vague suggestion like "the deep state globalists are who's preventing everything from being great so I'm just gonna weed 'em out and it'll all be fixed", which is a style of thinking you associate with YouTube commenters or drunk dudes with trucker hats, not people who have actual, actionable power. but since he became President it all became legitimized, so "Fauci actually created COVID while he was torturing puppies" is now an actual viewpoint you can spout on a major network. I mean look at the Twitter bullshit, they made so much noise about how Twitter was censoring conservatives and trying to influence the election to the point where there's a Congressional hearing about it, during which it comes out that actually pretty much the exact opposite was true, and nobody is gonna get dinged for any of it. you're right this probably did start with Rush.

frogbs, Friday, 10 February 2023 18:40 (one year ago) link

As President, I would simply pull the lever that says “low gas prices”, not “high gas prices” like all those other idiots

Alicia Silver Stone (Boring, Maryland), Friday, 10 February 2023 18:57 (one year ago) link

xp I think the thing that people forget is if others are saying fundamentally stupid things you can say that they're fundamentally stupid instead of being the "here's a snopes link" guy

obviously this isn't true across the board, but people want to have that feeling that their views, whether they're well-examined or not, provoke a reaction and are worth defending. and there are just so many things in this world that you can dismiss or not have a strong opinion on, because they're just really dumb

mh, Friday, 10 February 2023 19:24 (one year ago) link

The site is only loading ~40 tweets total for my entire feed. Previously it was at least ten times that (as in before the latest outage or thereabouts).

Does everyone have a check now? I was reading the responses to this tone deaf tweet from the US Ambassador to Afghanistan and all these seeming randos had blue checks.

Are Afghans familiar with #BlackGirlMagic and the movement it inspired? Do Afghan girls need a similar movement? What about Afghan Women? Teach me, ready to learn. #BlackHistoryMonth @Beyonce @lizzo @ReginaKing
