My 8 year old was introduced to gang beasts by a friend's kid earlier this year and now I have a standing friday afternoon date to battle two second graders who absolutely destroy me every time.

These rumors have been rumoring since like 2019, at this point I’d bet that the next thing will be launching somewhere March-June of 2024 and cost $400

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Saturday, 4 March 2023 19:02 (one year ago) link

I've started playing BOTW again to train for part 2. I am determined to complete the master sword trials! That's the only thing I never got around to doing.

Well, I didn't get every single korok seed, but I can't be bothered with that.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 4 March 2023 19:07 (one year ago) link

there are new rumors ok xp

lag∞n, Saturday, 4 March 2023 19:11 (one year ago) link

console release cycles have been 7 years for the past while so yeah we're entering the window soon

ciderpress, Saturday, 4 March 2023 21:40 (one year ago) link

I think I only managed to complete 7 or 8 levels of the master sword trials. Lots of fun but too difficult for me.

I really want a Switch to complement my PS5 - there are some games like Hades, Octopath Traveller etc I'm really keen to play but just don't think work so great on a big OLED telly. But Switch doesn't seem to be going down in price. Even s/h ones are selling for a good £200-£300

it probably won't go down in price until a successor is announced, doing too well still

their "price cut" options are the original Switch and the mini - but if you're getting a new one one now you might as well pay a bit more and spring for the OLED version

Nhex, Monday, 6 March 2023 13:22 (one year ago) link

I used it in handheld mode far, far less than I expected. It was great iirc for grindy stuff like Hollow Knight and Breath of the Wild, but in the end I prefer playing games on the TV, even those games, especially with the pro controller. I outright dislike the Switch's little joy-cons.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 6 March 2023 13:36 (one year ago) link

get da switch baby play zelda play zelda 2

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 13:51 (one year ago) link

Yeah I'd be tempted to get a Switch Lite and save myself a bunch of money, but it's nice to have the option to plug it in to my nice TV

i definitely wish i had the oled one, one of the most worthwhile upgrades imo

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:31 (one year ago) link

i have a lite bought it on a whim im not really "a gamer" but its good, will prob get a nicer one of the next gen tho

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:36 (one year ago) link

also im gonna be the zelda TOTK skeptic i think it looks un-hype from what theyve showed so far. i don't see the hook yet

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:37 (one year ago) link

i think theyre just being coy and its gonna be crazy

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:40 (one year ago) link

no ones making games like the n64/gamecube zeldas (and no ones ever quite been able to replicate the experience of the dungeons in those games) whereas everyones making games like botw now it's a much easier design to copy. so i need stronger rationale for every new game that they make in that direction

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:42 (one year ago) link

yeah i cant really speak to that i only played the 2d zeldas before botw also i have not played all the open world games but botw is really good you must admit right then what if they kicked it up a notch

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:47 (one year ago) link

ciderpress not to challenge you on that but I'm wondering what it is about those n64/gamecube dungeons that you're referring to? I feel like tons of 3D platformers from that era felt similar, it's just not the hottest design style (layout + gameplay-wise) right now.

Evan, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:52 (one year ago) link

New Zelda is about two months away, and there's still been very little revealed about it, which is ... curious. It's also about 4GB bigger than "Breath," which is also intriguing. I wonder if they'll pull the same thing they did with the Wii-U, release "Tears" for the Switch, then pretty soon after re-release it for a new system. Unfortunately, when it comes to Nintendo, it's probably safe to assume whatever comes next will not be backwards compatible.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:53 (one year ago) link

The only reason Nintendo was like that was because they kept changing the physical format of the game hardware. Which may be what you mean. But my Wii plays Gamecube games so it's not against their philosophy otherwise or something.

Evan, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:55 (one year ago) link

xp hard to describe but the puzzles and all the clever and surprising little ways in which the routes through the dungeon loop back on each other, also just the overall look and feel was particularly immersive and spooky in a way that the botw shrines and divine beasts arent

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 14:59 (one year ago) link

wii u, wii, 3ds, ds were all backwards compatible with their predecessor. switch is the outlier and it's for technical reasons, completely new gpu chip/architecture (and only 1 screen). switch 2 will be able to just use a newer version of the switch chip so no reason not to have back compatibility again

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:05 (one year ago) link

IDC if TOTK is the same as BOTW but more. Would still be worth it.

Jeff, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:08 (one year ago) link

i think theyve got some tricks up their sleeves, i mean weve already seen you can build a car, link is driving a car now

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:13 (one year ago) link

also u can build weapons

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KlOZcCSZqdw

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:14 (one year ago) link

also theres nothing stopping them from dropping 3 or 4 good big dungeons in a botw style zelda they just went with the mini-dungeons thing the first time. idr if they showed anything that looked like a dungeon in the trailer

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:14 (one year ago) link

seems like all that could lead to the new one being more puzzley also if theres time travel thats even more puzzling

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:15 (one year ago) link

theres a lot of evidence of the underground being more a part of this game and we all know whats underground (dungeons)

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:16 (one year ago) link

see building a car is the sort of thing i have no interest in, i liked botw in spite of it being a sandbox game, not because

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:17 (one year ago) link

i will build the most half assed car the world has seen, if its something you need to do to progress

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:17 (one year ago) link

botw2 link is a car guy now

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:19 (one year ago) link

grand theft auto: rune andreas

hell yeah brother

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:22 (one year ago) link

Yeah the shrines and beasts I think are meant to be a little shallower of an experience due to the overworld focus. I assumed they were creating a hierarchy where the overworld wins out as the focus, and the beasts act more as mini dungeons to drive the story.

xposts

Evan, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:28 (one year ago) link

the shrines were bad i think we can all agree

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:30 (one year ago) link

the divine beasts were... ok

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:30 (one year ago) link

I wouldn’t bother recommending anyone buy a switch now

giant bat fucker (gyac), Monday, 6 March 2023 15:31 (one year ago) link

if you want to play the switch you gotta buy switch new one comes out in what a year at the soonest its a year and half before you can even get one i mean

lag∞n, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:34 (one year ago) link

Shrines were fine. I didn't mind the concept tbh

Evan, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:36 (one year ago) link

shrines were fine yeah its just the divine beasts were like 20% the size of an OoT or wind waker dungeon which was a bit disappointing when you realized that they were gonna be the closest equivalent

ciderpress, Monday, 6 March 2023 15:39 (one year ago) link

the shrines/beasts were just kind of empty and sterile not a lot going on in there and most of the puzzles were not particularly fun or memorable, i did like moving the elephant trunk, hyrule castle was the most dungeony thing in the game
