here's the thing - said person took that personal experience, inserted it into a very very VERY different scenario and used it as a valid reason to tell other people what to say or not say. there are other choices that person had, including asking folks to be sensitive on the subject, or just bowing out of the conversation altogether. we all have personal difficulties / awful experiences we've gone through, but i try not to generalize mine in a way that polices what other people are saying based on 'have you no decency sir' bs.

this woman says awful things that dehumanize others, therefore we must say awful things that dehumanize her is so fucking normal it is hard to stop and realize that this norm is fucking awful

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 19 March 2023 03:12 (one year ago) link

No one has dehumanized her, they’ve treated her as what she is - a uniquely horrible person. We have evidence of this, her entire public life and political project.

papal hotwife (milo z), Sunday, 19 March 2023 03:14 (one year ago) link

She is using this story to humanize herself because everything else she posts is so utterly ghoulish and awful. It's an utterly cynical move and really doesn't deserve sympathy. And by saying that I am not implying that everyone who experiences loss is undeserving of sympathy.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Sunday, 19 March 2023 03:16 (one year ago) link

aimless im really sorry for your loss and sorry if this thread my posts or whatever caused you additional suffering im sure everyone here knows what its like to lose someone close to them

lag∞n, Sunday, 19 March 2023 03:18 (one year ago) link

they’ve treated her as what she is - a uniquely horrible person

final comments then I will stop. one aspect of wisdom is knowing when a uniquely horrible person is still a person and recognizing that what is horrible about them does not disqualify them from being recognized as human. being recognized as and treated like a human is a human right.

joking about death is not dehumanizing

this is a more than charitable characterization of many of the comments directed at this (horrible) human being. not death as a subject, but her.

now you all can continue to be amazed at my reaction to all this joking and goofing and telling me why I am wrong to object to slagging off on her for what she did. I promise not to respond. Really.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Sunday, 19 March 2023 03:25 (one year ago) link

Aimless, I'm very sorry for your loss and pain, and sincerely suggest that stepping out of this thread for a few weeks might be a productive act of self-care.

least said, sergio mendes (sic), Sunday, 19 March 2023 06:59 (one year ago) link

Here’s what it is: I shouldn’t be forced to recognize the humanity and trauma of someone who would like me and many people like me to be dead, and who spreads vitriolic abuse invoking real violence against us all over the place, and in fact seems to get off on being a cruel person.

I don’t envy anyone the position of having to decide to take a loved one off life support, and Aimless, I am sorry for your loss.

But when someone displays their trauma for the world to see and then continues to inflict trauma of another sort on an entire population, then all bets are off. The cruelty is on the table, and it is not the job of trans or queer people to act like Jesus turning the other cheek when the validity of our very existence is being called into question.

Our focal metric is hate speech impressions, not the number of Tweets containing slurs.

Most slur usage is not hate speech, but when it is, we work to reduce its reach. Sprinklr’s analysis found that hate speech receives 67% fewer impressions per Tweet than non-toxic slur Tweets

So what does the loss of two-step authentication mean for most (super casual) users? I'm not sure, but I suppose the first sign of anything hinky is a signal for me to delete. Or at least change my password.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 13:47 (one year ago) link

you can still use 2fa fwiw just not via sms which is a bad method anyway

lag∞n, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 13:57 (one year ago) link

I never used it, 2fa is a pain in the ass (I know it's more secure but it's also a pain in the ass so I avoid it when possible).

I created a new, 'professional' account (which uses the same handle I used to use before I started liberally telling people to go fuck themselves on twitter) and I see hardly any ads on it when I use the app on my phone. It is very strange. But my god does TWitter want to shove terrible people in my 'for you' now.

I use two-step stuff for anything that has a linked credit card. otherwise, it's never seemed that important to me. but then, Twitter has never been important to me, or at least I don't use it for anything important.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 14:09 (one year ago) link

Use 2FA everywhere you can bc one way or another anything that gets compromised will be a vector to getting all your other shit wrecked sorry if this offends

G. D’Arcy Cheesewright (silby), Wednesday, 22 March 2023 15:54 (one year ago) link

Yeah, 2FA or bust, preferably through an authenticator.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 22 March 2023 15:59 (one year ago) link

But I don't need this just to scroll twitter, do I? Otherwise I think I do use 2-step everywhere prompted.

One thing I'm noticing now is that when I click on a trending topic all the 'Top' tweets are often several weeks (and sometimes months or even years) old, usually from a previous time that topic was trending.

I, for one, like Twitter a lot more now. I always wanted an app that would show me a fresh video of a man dying immediately upon opening it, then 40 replies from hacked accounts trying to sell me adderall and shrooms. It's what I love about the world wide web.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 24 March 2023 14:38 (one year ago) link

I do find it odd that the Twitter algorithm seems to always want to show me videos of people being injured or maimed. I scroll past those as quickly as possible so I don't get to the part where someone gets hurt.

i feel like i spend too much of morning blocking individual sports teams and Eurovision and marvel universe as subjects and then too much of my afternoons blocking the exact same tweets as accounts.

Starting April 15th, only verified accounts will be eligible to be in For You recommendations.

The is the only realistic way to address advanced AI bot swarms taking over. It is otherwise a hopeless losing battle.

Voting in polls will require verification for same reason.

What he actually means is that all their methods of hiding promotion of toxic spam aren’t sufficient so now they’re just going to brute force it.

Standard reactionary victim-blaming tactics on his part.

recovering internet addict/shitposter (viborg), Tuesday, 28 March 2023 01:28 (one year ago) link

I think it's definitely mostly trying to get people to pay. "Overrun by bots" has been his excuse for almost everything with Twitter.
