Harassing and intimidating people at levels not seen before

Yes, as I recall, American history has heretofore been mercifully free of harassment and intimidation of innocent people

It's really amazing we made it so far

There's a more recent post (I think from today) along the same lines that specifically mentions indictment. Call me crazy, but I don't think he's playing 8-dimensional chess here, I think he's been told an indictment is forthcoming.

the President of Evidence actually ruled today that they can't indict Trump what a super victory for America!!!

There is a loophole in the Constitution that a former President can be arrested at the Superbowl if halftime show performers are white.

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Thursday, 23 March 2023 20:17 (one year ago) link

There was some reportage I saw this morning from his purported inner circle that claimed his lawyers informed him, yes, an indictment is all but certain, with that settling in as they recommended, and he seemed to agree, to focusing on a future appeal. but there are many stories about this mad monkey seemingly accepting an outcome only to turn around and freak out in public about it.

Bombthrower, what a sick burn. If Trump had started his own fast food chain this would be one of the characters.

Bombthrower sounds like the nickname a fast food place would give a frequent customer who would come in and just utterly destroy a toilet.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 March 2023 21:07 (one year ago) link

really more like *dropping* a bomb tho

hootenanny-soundtracking clusterfucks about milking cows (Neanderthal), Thursday, 23 March 2023 21:25 (one year ago) link

if you're throwing it, kinda insinuates you didn't make it to said toilet

There is nothing wrong with the Bombthrower nickname, it is a PERFECT beautiful nickname.

Maybe that's what Trump was talking about when he complained about having to flush 10-15 times.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Thursday, 23 March 2023 22:24 (one year ago) link

Even if we had no other supporting evidence, Trump's Truth Social cosplay is a decent signifier of deep mania

I know the true deplorables are beyond help but I would love to know what %age of his hardcore following aren't feeling at least a little uneasy about how unhinged and bonkers he is. Like, at least a few of the Nazis in the classic Downfall clip were shooting each other nervous glances.

The longer this Trump era limps on, the more I think that kind of portrayal of Hitler's followers is revisionist history.

It's interesting, I'm reading a memoir right now from Hans Massaquoi, who had a German mother and an African father, and grew up black in Nazi Germany (and then went on to do a bunch of other impressive things). The general vibe he recalls is a mix of true believers and people absolutely disgusted with the Nazis, many of whom just held their nose and hoped it would all be over soon. From his perspective, though, as a young guy, he didn't really have any idea what was specifically going on, just bits and pieces and clues here and there, though he did understand why so many Nazis treated him like shit (even if his friends who joined the party didn't). Anyway, it's a good book and a novel perspective and kinda inspiring and ultimately worth more of your energy than the contemporary subject of our ire and distaste.

I think there's almost certainly a faction of Trump Nation who deep down are ready to get past the clown show aspect of the moment and start literally incarcerating everyone on the other side, yes.

Distinguishing Trump followers from other conservatives in 2023 is wasted time. They're the same thing.

You can go look at
https://www.reddit.com/r/AskTrumpSupporters

for insight.

Plenty of them are tired/bored/embarrassed with Donaldian shenanigans, but still prefer him to any other alternative.

I have seen plenty of sentiments like "yeah sure I wish he would sometimes just shut up" or impatience with his hyperpersonal mudslinging ways, but none of these sentiments are turning Trump supporters into potential Democratic voters.

carne asana (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 24 March 2023 13:49 (one year ago) link

Some of it is familiar partisanship: Biden's old, but I'm going to vote for him in 2024. Some of it is a lingering respect for the anti-democratic drool that Trump has legitimated and DeSantis purified.

These people are lying to themselves. The only thing that distinguishes him from other Republicans at this point is his showmanship.

This is the thing people like about him, not the thing they could do without. It’s not like he was exceptionally gifted at governing and forming coalitions or whatever.

treeship., Friday, 24 March 2023 14:01 (one year ago) link

i once sent a Trump voter an email saying he was a cunt and in revenge he signed me up for FBI email updates.

seems pretty likely he's gonna call on his supporters to burn things down but he's gonna phrase it like "it would be a real tragedy if someone bombed the attorney general's office because of fake news!" which is gonna open up another investigation slowing this all down even further

frogbs, Friday, 24 March 2023 14:03 (one year ago) link

it's unlike him to be that direct, he likes his followers to connect the dots so he can sell them out and say he didn't tell them to do it.

it's going to be harder to get his base to want to do what they did on 1/6/2021, when Trump was still in office and they felt more protected, like he could call off the National Guard (as he did) etc. but sure, some will def try things - they already are! hence why going anywhere these days has me always making sure I know where the exits are.

also he is dumb enough to expose himself further but idk if *that* dumb, if anything that'd probably get him in custody faster

seems pretty likely he's gonna call on his supporters to burn things down

In an overnight social media post, Trump predicted that “potential death and destruction” may result if, as expected, he is charged by the Manhattan district attorney in connection with hush-money payments to a porn star made during the 2016 campaign. https://t.co/nAiBlhlh97

yeah that's the way he does it. "this might happen", then when someone does something, he can say "look I aws just predicting what would happen as a warning, not actually telling people to do it".

with the exception of Jan 6 where he quite literally sicced his folks on the Capitol

this is largely, btw, the likely reason that any indictment has been 'delayed', because they're trying to bolster security for the grand jury and the buildings/etc

(though that was already happening before he opened his maw)

curious what exactly the risk is of something like that happening again. was 1/6 considered a huge dud in Trumpworld? it accomplished nothing, made them look like dumb violent thugs, got a few people killed, and several hundred arrested. are any of them still like "hell yeah I'd do it again"?

A lot of people that showed up on 1/6 expected nothing to happen to them because they thought Trump's army/national guard/etc would protect them. Or swoop in and join them

A few of them were quoted in the press as being shocked when this didn't happen.

Your Proud Boys etc don't care about jail, but good luck getting the random families to show up again

yeah agreed knowing what they know now the average trump fan is not going to try another jan 6 but the hardcore militants could get up to stuff

lag∞n, Friday, 24 March 2023 17:53 (one year ago) link

across the various wingnut channels when people suggest showing up somewhere with guns or whatever half the responses are accusing it of being a fed honeypot, mostly theyre not really cut out for that sort of thing on jan 6 they just thought they were allowed to

lag∞n, Friday, 24 March 2023 17:55 (one year ago) link

I also suspect the authorities will be more aggressive in putting them down, and the wingnut warriors know that.

nickn, Friday, 24 March 2023 18:04 (one year ago) link

Will they though? I don't see nypd being eager to arrest their own.

Chyiv Kyiv (Fetchboy), Friday, 24 March 2023 18:58 (one year ago) link

I do think the right wing militia groups are still scary and in FL the Three Percenters literally showed up to 'protect' the Flagler school board from a trans activist group that was protesting it and brought weapons and armor and intimidated and shouted hate invective at them and even tried to follow some of them home.

that's the shit that keeps me up at night. the activist group didn't buckle though.

The light dawns a bit:
