genuinely baffled by what Elon thinks is going to happen open sourcing all this code. nobody is gonna do shit to improve it and it may lead to a bunch of backdoors being discovered. best case scenario he just finds new ways to embarrass himself.

frogbs, Friday, 31 March 2023 21:43 (one year ago) link

I’m likely the only one bored enough to still occasionally check the For You tab so this is of limited interest. But they’ve significantly deteriorated the functionality over the past day.

Yesterday there was still a clear indication of why tweets were recommended as “For You” — if you clicked “Not interested” it would bring up a list of options such as “Show fewer follows from [X account you follow]”. That’s all gone now. It’s obvious there’s a lot more random Twitter-selected recommendations in For You since they made the change too.

We’ll see if they really go through with the promised self-defeating termination of legacy blue checks over the coming day.

I do wonder how much of the Twitter userbase actually knows this is happening. I know a lotta people aren't particularly active on it or use it just to follow sports accounts or whatever.

@elonmusk , question for you. I'm losing about 500 to 1k users a day. To counter this I went Blue² thinking it gave me some preference and would help retain or grow users. Any suggestions ?

Can’t help but notice people still have their checks

frogbs, Saturday, 1 April 2023 17:06 (one year ago) link

1) As someone who was (briefly) in charge of the Twitter Media team - the group tasked with getting high profile people onto Twitter, and verification - AND as one of the few ever to voluntarily give up the blue check, I want to try to articulate how risky this policy change is. https://t.co/ABYu2kJIWa

— Nathan Hubbard (@NathanCHubbard) March 31, 2023

2)The reason the Twitter Media team existed was because *almost all* of the engagement on Twitter happens with tweets from high profile people/organizations across government, sports, music, business, news, whatever the Kardashians are, etc. They’re the lifeblood of the platform.

Hmm

Removal of verification badges is a largely manual process powered by a system prone to breaking, which draws on a large internal database — similar to an Excel spreadsheet — in which verification data is stored, according to the former employees. Sometimes, an employee would try to remove a badge but the change wouldn’t take, one of the former employees said, prompting workers to explore workarounds. In the past, there was no way to reliably remove badges at a bulk scale — prompting workers tackling spam, for example, to have to remove check marks one-by-one.
“It was all held together with duct tape,” the former employee added.

the whole thing is so amazing, he's not only making Twitter much much worse he's also making it basically impossible for it to ever recruit any new users again. and all for what'll total out to like 10% of the interest payment, which he has to pay because he stupidly offered 300% of what the company was actually worth. and now it turns out to be a massively convoluted switch. this shit's like something out of Arrested Development

frogbs, Sunday, 2 April 2023 03:20 (one year ago) link

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 2 April 2023 04:14 (one year ago) link

actually its even funnier than that, I'm guessing verified accounts were designed to have to be added by hand with no thought given to potentially having to remove them, possibly because nobody at Twitter envisioned them actually having a reason to do that

its da algo baby

Twitter revealed its algorithm to the world.

But what does it mean for you?

I spent the evening analyzing it.

Here’s what you need to know:

— Aakash Gupta 🚀 Product Growth Guy (@aakashg0) April 1, 2023

1. Likes, then retweets, then replies

Here’s the ranking parameters:

• Each like gets a 30x boost
• Each retweet a 20x
• Each reply only 1x

It’s much more impactful to earn likes and retweets than replies. pic.twitter.com/hwpriLgEXj

— Aakash Gupta 🚀 Product Growth Guy (@aakashg0) April 1, 2023

2. Images & videos help

Both images and videos lead to a nice 2x boost. pic.twitter.com/KQgkA2Qj6J

got it in the blood, the kid's a pelican (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 2 April 2023 13:49 (one year ago) link

its kind of funny thinking through the logic of ranking likes higher than retweets, retweets are what you want other people to see but likes are what you actually like, idk feel like a retweet is just fundamentally a stronger endorsement and should be ranked higher

lag∞n, Sunday, 2 April 2023 13:54 (one year ago) link

Well I had the sense that actually linking to Bandcamp was a no-no in terms of tweeting about your new record, there you have it.

ive seen people make a thread with the first or more posts having an image and text then tweet the link in the last post, and it turns out they did in fact crack the code

lag∞n, Sunday, 2 April 2023 14:02 (one year ago) link

as someone who mainly uses twitter to post links to my site, this is some bullshit right here

3. Links hurt, unless you have enough engagement

Generally external links get you marked as spam.

Unless you have enough engagement. pic.twitter.com/5BNbb4YvGJ

I never cracked the code. Didn't try very hard and just figured it wasn't worth it. I'd post some silly thing on Facebook and gets a hundred likes and 50 comments of interesting conversation. I'd post something on twitter and crickets. That was all I needed to know.
