People don’t become CEOs by treating staff well. What a weapon.

I don't find it surprising that CEOs think stuff like this, but you'd think some basic self-preservation instinct would inhibit them from saying it in public

Also I see we're past 15 April now and I can still vote in twitter polls.

For the coders on this thread, would it be fairly straightforward to limit voting to Blue subscribers only?

groovypanda, Tuesday, 18 April 2023 16:40 (one year ago) link

not if you fired all your programmers haha

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 April 2023 16:42 (one year ago) link

serious answer is who knows depends on how the program is structured, guessing that the answer is no tho considering that twitter is a very complicated program and twitter blue is a new thing thats grafted onto it, also they fired all their programmers

lag∞n, Tuesday, 18 April 2023 16:44 (one year ago) link

probably yes, if there was functionality to limit who can vote on a poll cross referenced with some TwitterUser class

alas something we're seeing is that Elon's ideas are so dumb that the people who built the software would've never anticipated implementing them, so theoretically simple tasks require some extensive refactoring. this happens a lot with the software I work on, people come up with bad ideas that are "easy" but break the rules and we have to come back and say no, the system wasn't designed to work like this, we can't do it without a lot of work, and usually that's that. Elon of course doesn't take no for an answer.

frogbs, Tuesday, 18 April 2023 16:46 (one year ago) link

depends if you want to ship it without introducing other bugs, or if you're ok with e.g. breaking all image links for users in europe and south america.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 18 April 2023 16:47 (one year ago) link

difficult to overstate the operational burden of shipping and observing new features in a system as complex as twitter. implementing the behavior is the easy part, relative to putting it in prod. which is why the changes he's made to the core timeline product have been incremental and have often been accompanied by downtime because shipping them broke something else.

honestly X Corp is a more fitting name for the kind of company they apparently want to be. it sounds vaguely supervillain-like.
also i think if you could go back to the day before twitter existed and just said "X or Twitter", most people would pick X. "most people" not in the good way but in the "the average of collective taste is something that is often very blandly acceptable" way
