now that blue checks are floating to the top of replies it basically guarantees that all the worst posters get the first reponse, since no decent poster would ever pay for Twitter Blue. not only do they all say the same shit every single one of them is weirdly obsessed with their like/RT/view metrics and talk about them nonstop. amazing how much worse Twitter got in just one week

they should add the emoticon rating system where you get to choose whether a post makes you laugh, cry, angry, confused, happy, or sick

lol these people are so weird theyre extremely passionate about very dumb things that make no sense

it's not so much funny that the guy doesn't know who albini is but that, as frogz said wrt metrics, they cannot comprehend that someone has followers because they actually DID SOMETHING that people care about, or are like actually funny or clever...everyone who has engagement has to have found a way to game the system or exploit some theoretical algorithm

the twitter blue subscriber accusing someone of paying for engagement my god

it's really funny to look at the replies of someone who has been blocking blue checks and seeing virtually none of the crap you get on other tweets

someone who is good at cards does seem like the person who would have such an obsession in an almost comical way tho xp

yea it reminds me of how the right loves the term 'virtue signaling' because they themselves have never cared about anything that wasn't in their own self-interest and can't imagine anyone else does either. or how the Dilbert guy assumes the only reason people could possibly disagree with him is because they've been persuaded by powerful master hypnotists. which coincidentally is the exact thing he claims to be able to do.
― frogbs, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:16 (one year ago) link

I've seen some Twitter Blue subscribers say stuff like "why WOULDN'T you want to pay a small fee to make your tweet perform well?" And it's like, if I'm paying to make it happen, then it sort of ruins whatever thrill there is from a tweet that takes off organically. I guess if you're just being cold-eyed about it and just want to accrue followers at all costs, then fine, whatever. But I find that approach kind of depressing.
― jaymc, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:20 (one year ago) link
oh yeah poker guys are very weird about their engagement, they do the same annoying shit all the big Youtubers do but most of them are getting less than 1000 views on each video, probably because they're such boring and uncharismatic people who refer to videos as "content". they're good videos if you wanna learn the game though
― frogbs, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:22 (one year ago) link
a few poker guys have good videos but yeah mostly theyre pretty bad

the whole culture of youtube –content creators– is so terrible and bizarre but also kind of fascinating, theyre completely cloistered reinventing the wheel, poorly and weirdly
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:25 (one year ago) link
one thing they do that you dont see on real tv is talk about their process, hence using the term content creator, it must be effective giving people that parasocial thrill, but id rather they not
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:27 (one year ago) link
I play PLO so there's only like 2 or 3 European guys out there making decent vids but I think JNandez is pretty decent. you wouldn't know it though from the thumbnails of him with a wide open mouth pointing to a graph with a title like "POKER PRO MAKES WORST CALL EVER!??"

tho tbf the amateur feel when done well is better than some generic slick tv bs, but still i wish they would stop talking about content, if i were on there id call my stuff art, high art, the best art ever please smash that subscribe button and the bell icon too
xp self re youtube
i guess some people do make money using these strategies.
― treeship., Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:33 (one year ago) link
my feeling is mostly people who do big youtube numbers are just making "good content" and the analytics are secondary, like theyll look at how videos perform and base decisions on that but mostly the reason theyre getting big views is because theyre making things people want to watch
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:36 (one year ago) link
which is somewhat different than say tiktok where trends play a bigger role

otoh you have guys like Mr. Beast who built an empire by relentlessly studying what kind of YouTube content gets the most engagement, everything from topic to length to thumbnail to title. you could argue he's making "good content" but really he's letting YouTube's algorithm dictate basically everything he does. which I guess is not too dissimilar to how a lot of pop songs get written if you actually listen to the Swedish dudes who are writing them
― frogbs, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:43 (one year ago) link
isn't this what ai does
― Laurie Anderson’s Singing Bowl Migraine Orchestra (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:44 (one year ago) link
except the algorithm = the "the total content of the dataset collected"?
― Laurie Anderson’s Singing Bowl Migraine Orchestra (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:45 (one year ago) link
i mean yeah but also hes trying hard to make good videos he puts a lot of money and effort into it, and theres not little skill in reading and synthesizing the trends etc, dont get me wrong its creepy trash but its also not just some ai generated slop xp re mister beast
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:46 (one year ago) link
I mean I guess it's the same idea that sex sells so if you're selling kitchen fixtures you might as well have a spokesperson with a lot of cleavage. everyone thinks it's gross and exploitative but if it works no one's gonna stop doing it
― frogbs, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:48 (one year ago) link
heh "trends curation"(?) vs ai FITE xp
i admit i know nothing of mister beast. or poker! i'm a perfect mark let's play
― Laurie Anderson’s Singing Bowl Migraine Orchestra (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:50 (one year ago) link
don draper would frown on the idea that sex sells, i mean theres just no easy way to win you have to figure it out theres a lot of competition
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:51 (one year ago) link
when you want someone to click something, sex and conflict sell. when you are trying to actually sell kitchen fixtures i'm not sure if it does.
― treeship., Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:53 (one year ago) link
algorithmic platforms produce a lot of garbage content because they are just trying to get people to click. it's just disposable content.
― treeship., Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:54 (one year ago) link
which is why this idea that ai will make content easy is just silly theres no barrier to entry, if every grindset guy can do it none will profit, now will there be a role for ai sure, but its a tool that you have to figure out how to use best
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:54 (one year ago) link
algo platforms do want good content tho, thats why they pay popular people to post, ultimately they need stuff that people want to watch
― lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 15:58 (one year ago) link
the whole monetized youtube content grind always reminds me of this

This is also what took a lot of political Youtube shows into anti-vax territory (Jimmy Dore) and other things that increase clicks
