i guess some people do make money using these strategies.

my feeling is mostly people who do big youtube numbers are just making "good content" and the analytics are secondary, like theyll look at how videos perform and base decisions on that but mostly the reason theyre getting big views is because theyre making things people want to watch

which is somewhat different than say tiktok where trends play a bigger role

xp otm, watch and share with their friends. word of mouth still underrated compared to under the dash analytics.

otoh you have guys like Mr. Beast who built an empire by relentlessly studying what kind of YouTube content gets the most engagement, everything from topic to length to thumbnail to title. you could argue he's making "good content" but really he's letting YouTube's algorithm dictate basically everything he does. which I guess is not too dissimilar to how a lot of pop songs get written if you actually listen to the Swedish dudes who are writing them

i mean yeah but also hes trying hard to make good videos he puts a lot of money and effort into it, and theres not little skill in reading and synthesizing the trends etc, dont get me wrong its creepy trash but its also not just some ai generated slop xp re mister beast

when you want someone to click something, sex and conflict sell. when you are trying to actually sell kitchen fixtures i'm not sure if it does.

algorithmic platforms produce a lot of garbage content because they are just trying to get people to click. it's just disposable content.

which is why this idea that ai will make content easy is just silly theres no barrier to entry, if every grindset guy can do it none will profit, now will there be a role for ai sure, but its a tool that you have to figure out how to use best

algo platforms do want good content tho, thats why they pay popular people to post, ultimately they need stuff that people want to watch

This is also what took a lot of political Youtube shows into anti-vax territory (Jimmy Dore) and other things that increase clicks

My 8 yo is a Mr. Beast fan, and he's been bugging us to let him do Youtube vids. He's already talking about subscription numbers and advertising rates.

but then look at this doug demuro has 5m subscribers and its usually just a thumbnail of him next to a car no arrows no text, he to me is the perfect youtuber charmingly amateurish on the surface while actually making very good tight videos, then youve got the charts guy with just a picture of a chart, basketball guys thumbnail looks more like something from a magazine feature

YouTube is awesome if you use it to find what you are interested within, I think leaving it to algorithmic chance is a dicey proposition. It seems like any random thread can lead into some dark alley crap in a couple moves, some times even on the YouTube kids app.

yeah youtube is in some ways amazing its prob the greatest learning resource ever assembled like if you want to fix your car you can find a video thatll help you do it but also it creates nazis

yeah I used it to replace the heating element on my dryer and also to fix the vent on a dishwasher

I used it in the bathroom once to learn how to crack crabs while on a dinner with a client, to avoid embarrassing myself I'm front of said client.

i watched a semesters worth of a yale classes on history of ukraine that was great, truly the promise of the internet paying off
