YouTube is awesome if you use it to find what you are interested within, I think leaving it to algorithmic chance is a dicey proposition. It seems like any random thread can lead into some dark alley crap in a couple moves, some times even on the YouTube kids app.

yeah youtube is in some ways amazing its prob the greatest learning resource ever assembled like if you want to fix your car you can find a video thatll help you do it but also it creates nazis

yeah I used it to replace the heating element on my dryer and also to fix the vent on a dishwasher

I used it in the bathroom once to learn how to crack crabs while on a dinner with a client, to avoid embarrassing myself I'm front of said client.

the teacher was amusing and just matter of factly used a framework of empire for the whole thing which is not something you typically get in a history documentary or whatever

I was thinking about the Sneetches the other day too, but the big difference is that the huckster in the Sneetches — Sylvester McMonkey McBean — knows the stars he's selling (and later removing) are worthless, and he makes a ton of money off of them. Elon thinks most people are as blue-check-obsessed as he and his sad fanboys are, and he is losing cash hand over fist because he misunderstands what's actually valuable about Twitter. why did I read the vile responses to that thread, jfc.

I mean he appears to literally be logged into it in that screenshot so I don't think it's a 'conspiracy theory' per se

also this is exactly the kind of shit he posts under his main account so why wouldn't it be

i've never had a twitter account, but i sometimes read certain accounts, and click through from ILX twitter embeds sometimes. just clicking around a teeny bit today, this thing of the blue-check people getting bumped to the top of the replies means every single post is just instantly encrusted with hateful right-wing garbage. like, that was always there, but now it's pushed up past any kind of response that even had the potential to be worthwhile.

and then those awful replies, being more visible, seem to attract more replies (and thus, i think, algorithmic juice) from people trying to argue against them. which maybe comes from a good place, but it means that almost all of the energy being put into the site is either trolling or engaging with trolls. like, great. great job. great website. the only question is how long it takes for its status as horrendously unpleasant right-wing cesspool to really proliferate in the public consciousness and displace whatever conception folks already have when they hear the word "Twitter." but it'll happen.

tbf most tweets on my tl even ones from pretty big accounts still dont have any blue check replies, but then the ones that do yeah its real bad

maybe i'm rate limited or something but on a musk post it's not possible to scroll to the non-verified (i.e. actually funny) replies. the infinite scroll site breaks before you get there.

yeah, there are certain types of posts that attract the blue checks-- the Kevin Bacon one is a prime example. Hillary tweeted her support for Biden and I don't know if it's possible to scroll past the blue check replies.
