imo his youtube videos stand on their own but yeah if you want more formal instruction youve gotta pay, luckily for me i dont just in it for the entertainment rarely play anymore and never played plo

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 16:47 (one year ago) link

YouTube is awesome if you use it to find what you are interested within, I think leaving it to algorithmic chance is a dicey proposition. It seems like any random thread can lead into some dark alley crap in a couple moves, some times even on the YouTube kids app.

The Artist formerly known as Earlnash, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 16:57 (one year ago) link

yeah youtube is in some ways amazing its prob the greatest learning resource ever assembled like if you want to fix your car you can find a video thatll help you do it but also it creates nazis

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 17:03 (one year ago) link

yeah I used it to replace the heating element on my dryer and also to fix the vent on a dishwasher

I used it in the bathroom once to learn how to crack crabs while on a dinner with a client, to avoid embarrassing myself I'm front of said client.

He then turned out to be a racist birther

i love the open yale courses

treeship., Tuesday, 25 April 2023 17:17 (one year ago) link

the teacher was amusing and just matter of factly used a framework of empire for the whole thing which is not something you typically get in a history documentary or whatever

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 17:22 (one year ago) link

i like this one: https://oyc.yale.edu/english/engl-300 sometimes i fall asleep listening to him go on about roman jakobsen and jacques derrida and these sorts of people. reminds me of college.

The funniest, most accurate explanation of why a blue checkmark is Elon's mark of death. pic.twitter.com/ejUGYeVLvM

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:05 (one year ago) link

nothing about the conspiracy theory that elon is running an alt account posing as his 3 year old kid?

he's weird and seemingly on drugs enough that i could believe it

If you are dumb like I am let me explain: Elon showed a screenshot which included him logged into his alt which is a very disturbing alt at best. https://t.co/5m8fnRIm2p

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:06 (one year ago) link

bit of it on the elon thread, i dont think its a true alt/sock its more what it says in its name a test account for elon, prob particularly to see what twitters like for a normal user that doesnt have millions of followers, some weird posts def tho lol

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:09 (one year ago) link

i mean if youre trying to have a secret account you usually dont put your name in it

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:13 (one year ago) link

Unless ... you're an attention craving moron?

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:15 (one year ago) link

yea the most charitable reading is that he's using it to see what content a minor might see/a normal user but the replies are fucking weird

global tetrahedron, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:17 (one year ago) link

I was thinking about the Sneetches the other day too, but the big difference is that the huckster in the Sneetches — Sylvester McMonkey McBean — knows the stars he's selling (and later removing) are worthless, and he makes a ton of money off of them. Elon thinks most people are as blue-check-obsessed as he and his sad fanboys are, and he is losing cash hand over fist because he misunderstands what's actually valuable about Twitter. Or what was, anyway. Should've called McBean.

feel like this mad man might actually have destroyed twitter with $8 tweets at the top of replies.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:31 (one year ago) link

yeah, it was fun blocking them, but there are just too many dummies

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:35 (one year ago) link

thinking back to before elon owned twitter watching him and his cronies convince each other that a subscription service was a no brainer "id pay $5 month for twitter" theyd say to each other

honestly it’s very funny to me that tweets like this are getting promoted now

, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 18:44 (one year ago) link

why did I read the vile responses to that thread, jfc.

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 19:01 (one year ago) link

I mean he appears to literally be logged into it in that screenshot so I don't think it's a 'conspiracy theory' per se

also this is exactly the kind of shit he posts under his main account so why wouldn't it be

frogbs, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 19:01 (one year ago) link

i've never had a twitter account, but i sometimes read certain accounts, and click through from ILX twitter embeds sometimes. just clicking around a teeny bit today, this thing of the blue-check people getting bumped to the top of the replies means every single post is just instantly encrusted with hateful right-wing garbage. like, that was always there, but now it's pushed up past any kind of response that even had the potential to be worthwhile.

and then those awful replies, being more visible, seem to attract more replies (and thus, i think, algorithmic juice) from people trying to argue against them. which maybe comes from a good place, but it means that almost all of the energy being put into the site is either trolling or engaging with trolls. like, great. great job. great website. the only question is how long it takes for its status as horrendously unpleasant right-wing cesspool to really proliferate in the public consciousness and displace whatever conception folks already have when they hear the word "Twitter." but it'll happen.

got it in the blood, the kid's a pelican (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 19:49 (one year ago) link

tbf most tweets on my tl even ones from pretty big accounts still dont have any blue check replies, but then the ones that do yeah its real bad

lag∞n, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 19:53 (one year ago) link

maybe i'm rate limited or something but on a musk post it's not possible to scroll to the non-verified (i.e. actually funny) replies. the infinite scroll site breaks before you get there.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 20:04 (one year ago) link

yeah, there are certain types of posts that attract the blue checks-- the Kevin Bacon one is a prime example. Hillary tweeted her support for Biden and I don't know if it's possible to scroll past the blue check replies.

INDEPENDENTS DAY BY STEVEN SPILBERG (President Keyes), Tuesday, 25 April 2023 20:04 (one year ago) link

Doc otm, it's incredible how Elon took the one aspect of social media that everyone hates - the nonstop bickering over idiotic right wing disinfo - and made it the main feature of the site.

frogbs, Tuesday, 25 April 2023 21:55 (one year ago) link

Particularly sucks to be a woman working for a company that was bought by a guy on a post-divorce woman-hating binge.

New: Twitter used to offer employees 20 weeks of paid parental leave. That’s being changed to whatever is required by law in the region where the employees work, along with a “top up” of two weeks of leave, per internal docs.

— kate conger (@kateconger) April 25, 2023

Or a guy, for that matter, assuming "parental leave" means either parent. Still feels overtly "fuck women" tho.

tbf most tweets on my tl even ones from pretty big accounts still dont have any blue check replies

Right sorry, post-breakup woman-hating binge.

I don’t think there’s many women left. Not one of the women I worked with survived the layoffs the first week after he took over. There’s a class action (among many) asserting those were discriminatory, which seems self-evident.
