Judge in Carroll v. Trump case admonished Trump for social media comments, telling Trump's lawyer: “We’re getting into an area, conceivably, where your client may or may not be tampering with a new source of potential liability" https://t.co/ZgG18joSc3

Trump's lawyer seemed to acknowledge the difficulty of restraining his client:

“Here’s all I can tell you: I will speak to my client and ask him to refrain from any further posts regarding this case...I will do the best I can do, your honor. That’s all I can say.”

Never thought I would be rooting for Disney in a jurisdiction dispute but here we are

strange bedfellows

Suddenly I'm in House Mouse

pinot grigioriffic (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 17:56 (one year ago) link

lol yeah prior to this brouhaha Disney was very persona non grata in my circle for how they treated international exchange employees during the pandemic, as well as how poorly they pay and treat their employees (when compared to Universal Studios).

but sometimes the enemy of the enemy is your friend!

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 17:58 (one year ago) link

I've started to realize a lot of lawyers love being on TV so maybe that's why

frogbs, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 18:00 (one year ago) link

Neanderthal, my man: I was reflexively anti-Disney for most of my life. But in perhaps 2018, my wife and children sat me down and basically told me that there was a narrow window in which we would, collectively, be likely to enjoy a vacation in that allegedly magical place, and we needed to do it exactly then.

So I obligingly contributed something like eight thousand dollars to your local economy. (You're welcome.) We had an okay time. My children outgrew everything Disney-related. After that I didn't ever want to think about the Mouse again, and now here I am thinking about MouseCorp again. Fuck you, Ron.

pinot grigioriffic (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 18:10 (one year ago) link

i actually went last month! had been my first time in like 15 years, lol.

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 18:27 (one year ago) link

I went to Disneyland when I was about five and have almost no memory of it other than the submarine ride and the Pirates of the Caribbean ride, which was a little scary. I went to Disney World when I was 10 — I remember that one a little better, because EPCOT had just opened. It was fine. I enjoyed watching the Disney TV show as a kid way more than I did going to the actual parks.

All that said, I hope Disney steamrolls DeSantis until he's personally on the street shaking a cup for coins.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 18:49 (one year ago) link

DeSantis seems hellbent on being the most despised politician in the country, which doesn't bode well for his political future

Andy the Grasshopper, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:13 (one year ago) link

In my experience, Disney World is fantastic for a child, a nightmare for an adult. It's also a perfectly tuned machine for separating parents from their money. I'll be happy if I never have to go again, although I hope I'm lucky enough to have grandchildren to take.

That said, I hope they crush this little upstart like the insect he is.

Disney World is wonderful. Good food and drink.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:21 (one year ago) link

I don't count as a Floridian, I suppose, but before the pandemic we'd often go and maybe hit one park in three days, there's so much stuff to do.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:21 (one year ago) link

For me, it's complete sensory overload, like a casino. And the rides end up making me sick after a while.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:23 (one year ago) link

Disney is great, though I doubt I'll go again until I am a grandparent, assuming I can even afford it by then.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:24 (one year ago) link

Epcot is far from a sensory overload experience but ymmv

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:25 (one year ago) link

I grew out of theme parks in general after a while. just a product of getting old. I'm a fiend for water rides but my friends never want to get wet. i'm like "it's 90 degrees in Florida, you'll be dry again in 20 minutes".

in my 20s, when I was mostly broke in college, my folks got me an annual pass to Universal Studios/Islands of Adventure, and it felt like the holy grail, like, I'd just drive there at random times because I wanted to ride a rollercoaster. then I started going there to ride the Hulk instead of going to class. i'd go with my friend and we'd spend literally all day there.

now, after four hours in a theme park, I'm already ready to tap out. it's hot, my legs get sore, and rollercoasters, though I still love them (and did the Dragster at Cedar Point before it permanently closed), I get head-aches and backaches like I never got before. Disney rides mostly don't have that problem but you'll walk a much longer distance there then at Universal. my friend does tours there for rich fams sometimes and walks like 8 miles a day.

Tron ride is top notch though, dope design and everything.

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:27 (one year ago) link

Epcot has always been my fav, since childhood.

I still miss the Kitchen Kabaret show at The Land, which featured Pita Gabriel

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:27 (one year ago) link

Last time I spent three days at Universal with my kids, by the end I was ready to die.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:32 (one year ago) link

I still like Busch Gardens because it has animals to look at, more walking space, and involves me leaving Orlando for the day.

also appreciate the one in Williamsburg, home to the Big Bad Wolf ride from the 80s to like maybe a decade ago.

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:37 (one year ago) link

The giant roller coaster at Busch Gardens is the only thing I remember. I enjoyed that.

Honestly, my most memorable amusement park experience was going to Action Park in NJ as a teenager. That place was a terrifying, life-in-your-hands experience. Even the documentary about it doesn't fully convey just how fucked up and thoroughly late '70s/early '80s grimy/trashy it was.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:39 (one year ago) link

having an annual pass to Universal gets you in free to the Mardi Gras concert series, which one year featured Al Green.

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:40 (one year ago) link

(I went, but paid full price...was still worth it)

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:40 (one year ago) link

what would a Donald Trump theme park entail

Cthulhu Diamond Phillips (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:41 (one year ago) link

I don't ride many attractions these days; like I said, I treat Disney World as an expensive hanging-out experience.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:41 (one year ago) link

Universal kind of sucks, with the exception of immersive stuff like Harry Potter and maybe the Simpsons, it's mostly a bunch of indoor 3D motion simulators where a bunch of cartoons yell and spit at you.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 26 April 2023 20:45 (one year ago) link

I cannot fathom being a fully grown adult and not finding amusement parks to be a total nightmare. They are the most awful places on earth.

ive only been to disneyland when i was a kid but i do think disneyworld is interesting because of the scale its fuckin huge like a city and also just the mystique of it its really its own thing where as a like six flags or something is pretty generic, also something about it being such an insane expression of our culture, not sure id want to go tho, def not enough to actually go
