Forget it, ums, it's Trumptown.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 12 June 2023 16:12 (ten months ago) link

idk it's still kind of a mystery, given his strange deferential relationship with Putin and Kim Jong Un plus the very shady looking deals Kushner got it wouldn't surprise me if he's just straight up selling government secrets. but also Trump is the one guy who might just take this stuff because he thought it was cool, or maybe out of bitterness, I know for most people it wouldn't matter but in this case I think it will

afaict he did indeed go full Gollum.

Occam's razor in full effect. Why did Trump take them? Because he is a selfish, shortsighted, self-obsessed moron.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 12 June 2023 16:17 (ten months ago) link

what's really funny is Trump was reported as frustrating all the records people when he was in office, because any time he's finished with anything, it was reported he'd habitually crumple up whatever it was he was reading and throw it in the trash. so someone's job was to fish things out and uncrumple them because there are rules about presidential record retention

presumably he needed as many documents as possible because he's wrecking them after waving them around and bragging

mh, Monday, 12 June 2023 16:25 (ten months ago) link

The example in the indictment was Trump using the documents to prove that deep state people (i.e. Gen. Milley) were lying about him in the press.

Going great:

New: Trump expected to leave Bedminster shortly to get to Florida this afternoon. He’s spending the day meeting potential lawyers — though David Markus is said to have already turned him down. Another said to be meeting with Trump is Ben Kuehne, who has previously been indicted.

They already have their wish. Legally speaking, he's not barred from the office. All he has to do is win a majority of the votes of the electoral college and he's back in.

APPOINTMENT OF COUNSEL IN TRUMP CASE:

I've seen folks speculating that Trump could have appointed counsel or a public defender. He can't. Appointment of counsel in these cases is under the Criminal Justice Act (CJA). (This is a core area of expertise for me.) 1/ https://t.co/WI69RjkFjY

last time around they actually had the belief that the Trump-lead military and government was going to be on their side. which of course happened but not to the degree that they succeeded. now they don't even have that.

henry s, Monday, 12 June 2023 19:03 (ten months ago) link

At this point there are plenty of extreme right LARPers who'll jabber ominously if you put a camera on them and invite them to tell the world how fearsome they are. My sense is that the more competent leadership, capable of forming a plan of action with a ghost of a chance, the type who have relevant military or police training, have either been indicted & convicted or have burrowed themselves deeper underground and are waiting for a more favorable moment such as might be provided with a close election or Trump back in office.

the first one went so incredibly poorly

I disagree. When you consider how small the central core of the conspirators was and how small a force they had at their disposal, they came unbelievably close to success. They nearly handed Trump a pretext for declaring a state of emergency. They expected him to use that gift to complete their coup d'etat. What they failed to understand was that Trump is incompetent. And very lazy. And by far the wrong person to trust to pull his weight.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Monday, 12 June 2023 19:09 (ten months ago) link

admittedly I'm not that well read up on what the plan actually *was* but I thought something like that would depend on Republicans going along with it in lockstep when in fact they were all scared out of their minds

xxpost That judge was right to emphasize how dangerous someone like Stewart Rhodes is, because he's (apparently) charismatic, smart and driven. Even if one were to concede the first trait in Trump's case, he sure as hell ain't the other two things.
