apologies, but does anyone here happen to have a Bluesky invite they might be willing to share with ... uh ... me?― alpine static, Sunday, July 2, 2023 5:02 AM (seven hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

I’ve been getting some every few days. I’ll post them when I have them. But maybe they’ll slow down sending invite codes for a few days?

the weird rate limit was a nice little window into how twitter hydrates user timeline caches and what is/isn’t pre-populated

Some real high school vibes at Twitter right now, everyone on the site is actively celebrating the it’s demise while plotting ways to break it further

Yeah GCP doesn’t just cut off customers that spend hundreds of millions a year on the first of the month at midnight UTC.
― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Sunday, 2 July 2023 17:44 (ten months ago) link
There’s apparently a specific service to do with the creation and modification of load balancing/network abuse rules that ran on GCP. Unexpected loss of that could have triggered this problem but seems more likely that they shut it down deliberately last month to save money and effectively tied their hands behind their back when whatever actually caused this problem (which admittedly could have been actual abuse like musk seems to think) started off. These systems are so complicated and interconnected and it’s so hard to reason about whether it’s safe to remove a service. I can see why a rewrite is tempting when the only people who had a chance of reasoning like that are on a beach somewhere.

― Alito Bit of Soap (President Keyes), Monday, 3 July 2023 16:13 (ten months ago) link
Yeah, that is definitely in effect. Which is SO DUMB, because Twitter has typically had a lot (no idea how much) of traffic from non-users who follow links. Which is good for advertisers, obviously. And since the blue ticks are obviously not paying any bills, he needs as many eyeballs as he can get. But obviously trying to figure out the "business plan" here is useless, there isn't one.
― a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Monday, 3 July 2023 16:42 (ten months ago) link
I mean half the stories that get pushed out feature Twitter embeds that have needed context for the story that the article doesn't make redundant.
today I found a weird one where I went to an article and every embedded tweet showed up as the first ever tweet by Jack Dorsey, "just setting up my twittr", instead of the tweet that was supposed to appear there.

not the most original observation but elon came from industries where you sell things not advertising and he really thinks you should be able to sell twitter but its just not true
― lag∞n, Monday, 3 July 2023 16:58 (ten months ago) link
and its a well established industry truth, but he thinks hes smarter
there's definitely some logic to it if you think doing so will encourage people to sign up, which maybe makes sense if your social network is brand new (like it might make sense for Bluesky, if you wanna see what's going on there we want you to make an account) but Twitter is like 15 years old now, if someone doesn't have an account there by now they just aren't gonna make one. but they still might click on things or look at certain people's feeds (obviously it's still pretty good for say, NBA free agency news), and they will still see ads, so....I can only imagine this is happening because Twitter can't handle the traffic right now
several sites I visit have little widgets which show recent tweets by the author, all those seem to be broken right now, or purposely shut off. idk that seems kinda bad, like one of Twitter's strengths is that everywhere you go online will link to it somewhere, now you're just encouraging people to remove Twitter stuff entirely
― frogbs, Monday, 3 July 2023 17:02 (ten months ago) link

for sure...there's a reason the previous owners were so desperate to ensure the deal went through, from what I'd read Twitter's new user signups were not where they needed to be and social media networks by and large do not have a way to reverse things once the numbers start dropping. still what Elon is doing is just jaw dropping stuff, while I don't think he's *trying* to kill Twitter the fact that people are suspecting that may be the case is not exactly a good sign
― frogbs, Monday, 3 July 2023 17:53 (ten months ago) link
fwiw i dont think it was in a death spiral before elon bought it, which is not to say there werent strategic challenges but thats not the same thing as actually being in the process of dying

the articles I've read on the subject claimed that Twitter probably could tread water for a while but that the best case scenario is that it would slowly bleed out in the next 10-15 years. no idea how true that analysis is but yeah when I think of a major site going into a death spiral it's not last year's Twitter (which still seemed pretty alive), it's Twitter right now
― frogbs, Monday, 3 July 2023 18:14 (ten months ago) link
btw based on what I'm seeing there's a good chance the 600 tweet "rate limit" never existed and that the site has just been randomly melting down. some people are saying they can't trigger it and others are saying the site's just not working at all
