I have no interest in arguing about finance. I freely admit that I don't really understand finance (or anything, really).

But exactly one time, my wife was pregnant so I went into a bank and said, "Hi, I have a bunch of dollars. Can I please live in a house?"

The bank said, "okay," and they let me live in a house.

Fifteen years later, I went back to the same bank and said, "Hi, remember me? I have part of a house. Can I please have some dollars?"

The bank said, "okay," and they let me have some dollars.

Really? I must get my wife pregnant.

the dreaded dependent claus (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 27 July 2023 15:08 (nine months ago) link

what have you people done here??

where i live - this is probably common - a house for $150,000 now sells for $300,000 because of pandemic and nobody can afford to sell because there is nowhere to move to because nobody can sell because there is nowhere to move to. because the prices are too high. its like the gift of the magi!

this all reminds me of that goofus & gallant strip where gallant returns a dropped wallet to its owner and goofus drops the atom bomb

Everybody wants to buy a house in the Greater Washington area, it’s great (also terrible)!

the history of the word chintz/y is pretty interesting

rob, Thursday, 27 July 2023 19:35 (nine months ago) link

The solution Scott, is to simply own two houses

hrep (H.P), Friday, 28 July 2023 00:34 (nine months ago) link

LOL I wish houses were even $300k where I live. Try starting at $900k for a small 2 bedroom house.

sarahell, Friday, 28 July 2023 17:56 (nine months ago) link

Yeah a million dollars is the starting price hereabouts

Some people call me Maurice Chevalier (Ye Mad Puffin), Friday, 28 July 2023 18:01 (nine months ago) link

i live in a town that nobody was moving to before the pandemic. then the good people of Boston showed up. they got scared. there used to be 40 houses for sale at any given time. and now there is next to nothing. pretty huge difference. we are very close to amherst and northampton where prices were getting crazy before the plague. now they are just that much crazier.

table, this thread has gone away and i don't really want to revive it but if you were wondering why i called you a renowned queer history professor on here i honestly thought you were someone else. my bad. sorry. i've been away. though its more of a compliment than anything else...

scott seward, Saturday, 29 July 2023 16:04 (nine months ago) link

hey scott, it’s cool! i am merely a somewhat known queer poet and educator.

i legitimately couldn't figure out what "BJH" could stand for other than Barclay James Harvest

in my defense i've never actually heard barclay james harvest

I know I shouldn't be, but I'm sometimes amused that I've been posting here for over 15 years and still remain such a non-entity. Much like high school, this place can feel very cliquish and if you aren't in one of the right cliques, you kind of don't exist.

tl;dr; if you want me to kill a thread dead, let me know and I'll post and you can watch it sink!

I have never thought this about you if that means anything? To my mind, you are the poor guy who would post about working with some monster who’d burn microwave popcorn at work all the time? Cos that’s my association when I see your handle. Definitely not a nonentity.

In any case, don’t worry about that.

a lot of posters know each other irl and interact off board, that may be why it feels weird to you, jon

i don't think you're a non-entity at all, jon!

I've been here since the 1st month of ilx and im only known for polls even though I've hardly done any in years but its hardly an annoyance. I'd be fine with anonymity too tbh. Hence the DN changes now and again.

I've posted this exact sentiment in the past, right down to offering a similar threat at the end.

Lately I guess I've not been as hungry for connections and engagement here though, so it's not been as much of bother.

linoleum gallagher (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:01 (nine months ago) link

i was just struck lately by watchin some interesting threads I chimed in on sink to the bottom. i like to think i'm not THAT boring, but maybe i am or just lots of folks have me killfiled.

thanks for the kind words, been a hard year and while i understand the idea of forums can feel sometimes like shouting into the void but things have been feeling extra void-y lately.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:03 (nine months ago) link

i kill threads dead all the time but never worry about it, knowing that one day Neanderthal will revive them in style when everyone least expects it.

Deflatormouse, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:04 (nine months ago) link

lol otm, Neando is the king of revives

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:06 (nine months ago) link

it would be interesting to know what people think the cliques are, who is in them, and to what degree those posters feel the same. not that I'm suggesting we actually discuss that, that would be a terrible idea

rob, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:08 (nine months ago) link

"clique" was probably a bad word for it. as someone noted upthread there are several different groups that interact irl from time to time so they are naturally more in tune, those can sometimes feel to an outsider like an "in" group

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:10 (nine months ago) link

ah ok, yeah I've never met any ilxors irl so I get that. I do feel (quite possibly one-sided) affinities with sets of posters, but those sets can shift over time

rob, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:11 (nine months ago) link

btw that "someone" was brimstead lol

rob, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:12 (nine months ago) link

yes, sorry, it was brimstead. didn't scroll back enough to verify who it was before posting.

I cannot and will not speak for all of ilxdom but you are all treasures. Neanderthal, Chris, Evan, Jon. Rock the fluck ON, muthafluckas.

I have definitely felt like a thread-killer at times. (Then I'll say something that gets me labeled a sexist knuckle-walker and woo-hoo, off to the races we go!) But you are definitely one of the posters whose contributions annoy me the least.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 16:22 (nine months ago) link

think we've all imagined with killed the odd thread here and there, maybe sometimes a post is so great and to the point that it just doesn't need further elaboration
