So, dumb question, but is the whole “clueless billionaire’s vanity project” aspect of the Twitter takeover just a front for Elon’s backers buying influence over our political discourse and/or attempting to destroy an avenue of free speech which was increasingly seen as a threat?

I do think there may be an ulterior motive for the name change. I believe his legal team is gonna try some shit. but really if you follow this guy at all you'd know these are just the kinds of ideas he has. he never says anything smart

Im not sure he has “backers” in that sense but he has supporters of wealth and influence, I suppose. But I think this was opportunistic of them or just the obvious end result of the actions taken so far. You could pose the same question about Trump. Manipulated fool or Machiavelli? It’s somewhere in between.

yeah I mean if the scheme was to kill Twitter by implementing ideas that are completely in character for Elon Musk I'd actually tip my cap to that

what really disturbing is the fact that hes been so successful, by one important measure the most successful, to this point while doing this type of shit

space x just blew up a rocket and a landing pad trashing the local environment because he felt like it wasnt necessary to build the proper infrastructure, tesla makes shitty cars which he constantly lies about, the tunnel company was purely a pr gambit to sabotage public tanspo, hes got another company devoted to torturing monkeys

right I mean I think big tech companies do dumb shit all the time but a lot of times those ideas actually wind up being successful or at least not hurting their bottom line so I have to say "well ok maybe I'm wrong and just don't understand this". but 90% of Elon's ideas are just plain idiotic and/or unworkable, and with Twitter we're finally seeing how bad things get when he's actually able to unilaterally make decisions. so yeah the fact that he's been so successful can only mean that either our system is deeply fucked up to the point where a random nepo baby who gets lucky with investments can become one of the most powerful men in the world, either that or objective reality just doesn't exist

How quickly we forgot all the lawsuits and bullshit over the Tesla solar roofs, the SolarCity fiasco, etc. etc. etc.

The "use twitter as a vehicle to move political discourse right" gambit I think would be a dumb plan because twitter's influence isn't over the population at large (main twitter related topic I used to hear from activism/ngo friends who dealt with it a lot pre-Musk was "it's not that effective because regular people aren't on there"), it's over the media class and I think it's p hard to argue anything Musk has done has been to get that demographic onside.

Yeah I guess what I was getting at is that this quick pivot to stomping out actual discourse and reporting, and attempting to turn Twitter into yet another conspiracy-laden conservative echo chamber, if successful it’s a pretty big win for the right, and you have to look at who helped Elon finance his acquisition and wonder whether it’s really just him who is driving it in this direction. It becomes another piece of the new hegemony they are trying to create.

theres def some sort of movement, radicalization amongst the psycho silicon valley elite, but imo as far as the plan or just a thing that happening because its the kind of thing they like to turn twitter into a right wing platform it will prob not work because its incompatible with what people liked about twitter in the first place, as evidenced by twitter currently in its death throws

same, I mean I posted on SomethingAwful for a while and part of the game was always who could say the most shit about Lowtax without getting banned. to me "the owner of this place sucks" is just a natural place for a message board/social media site to be in. Musk is definitely a more obnoxious and infuriating guy than Zuck and the others but is he really that much worse? I dunno.

if I still check Twitter it's because there are still some people I really like on it. a lot of them are not American and don't seem to know a whole lot about Elon so they just respond to all the weird shit with "ha ha what is going on here". I used to be on there because it was really good for following sports, particularly baseball, but the timeline is constantly jacked up and a lot of the good accounts aren't really active anymore, so it's not really worth it for that either. idk I figured i'd check in every now and then but that stupid fucking "X" on my home screen now makes me really wanna uninstall the app from my phone
