Are you allowed to run for president if you're in jail?

the world is your octopus (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 1 August 2023 21:45 (nine months ago) link

yes

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Tuesday, 1 August 2023 21:45 (nine months ago) link

It's not only allowed, it's encouraged.

depends on the state

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Tuesday, 1 August 2023 21:48 (nine months ago) link

Most states deprive convicted felons of many of their civil rights, including the right to vote. These rights are usually restored upon release, unless you have the misfortune to live in a state like Florida, which in an example of its endless fuckery won't restore them until the felon pays court costs, restitution, etc.

A felony conviction is no bar to running for President of the United States. The Senate could have convicted Trump in the second impeachment and prohibited from ever running for federal office again. Short of that, he'd have to be found to have engaged in rebellion.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Tuesday, 1 August 2023 21:48 (nine months ago) link

that's the trick, you have to stay convicted, then you can do whatever you want. once you stop being convicted is the problem

Smith: The attack on our nation's capital on January 6th was an unprecedented assault on the seat of American democracy. It's described in the indictment. It was fueled by lies. Lies by the defendant, targeted at obstructing a bedrock function of the U.S. Government pic.twitter.com/wj685DpKIy

“Today's indictment serves as an important reminder: anyone who puts himself over the Constitution should never be President of the United States,” Pence said in a statement.

Andy the Grasshopper, Tuesday, 1 August 2023 23:39 (nine months ago) link

Considering the guy reportedly took notes, and no doubt said notes had a big impact on this indictment, I guess that loser has nowhere else to go.

Also whatever happens with this I'm so glad he got outright charged for Jan. 6 — good! Any fuckin thing we can do to make anyone think twice about doing that again.

Meanwhile Yglesias is SURPRISED that some of the people in the White House were actually ACTING like they were trying to steal an election.

WTF did he think they were doing?

This reveals a more serious level of real planning for a seizure of power than I’d guessed was happening. pic.twitter.com/k9o0pxl8v8

I think the part about this that various people are reacting to is that they were planning to use the military to enforce the overturned election.

Given Lovecraft's antisemitism and that Rehoboth is a Hebrew place name, there's probably something to that.

Also: I feel like the revelation of these goons wanting to use the military isn’t that surprising. Fascists are fascist.

butt dumb tight my boners got boners (the table is the table), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:17 (nine months ago) link

The more surprising thing was how resistant the military was to it. At least the senior leadership. Not the kind of thing I take for granted. But of course, Trump spent his entire term trashing them, so they probably weren’t feeling very coup-y.

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:24 (nine months ago) link

you have to lay the groundwork for this sort of thing you cant just call up the army last minute all like what are you doing right now, the police wouldve been a better choice anyway

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:26 (nine months ago) link

extremely poor plan altogether, staging a coup was a tall order anyway, stealing an election on the other hand is doable under the right circumstances, i wouldve focused on that

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:29 (nine months ago) link

I was thinking of Nixon’s Saturday Night Massacre and how it took him so many tries to find someone who’d fire the prosecutor

Trump ended up with a parallel problem, fired any guy who showed a spine at any point at all. Can’t really coup when everyone in your circle is either spineless or a pure opportunist. Or Pence. Pence was just there because he wanted to be VP despite having the least swag since Dan Quayle

mh, Wednesday, 2 August 2023 02:48 (nine months ago) link

It was all very half-assed, like everything Trump does. Coup on the cheap. Good point about the cops, that's definitely more his base than the military (or at least than the senior military, there's inevitably fascists in the ranks).

“Rehoboth/Dewey has been one of my family's go-to family gathering spots for decades, it's nice in a classic Atlantic Seaboard way.”

It’s wonderful. I’ve been there a bunch and spent a long, mellow weekend in Dewey back in April. For people in this area it’s kind of the chilled out version of Ocean City, Maryland.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 11:06 (nine months ago) link

Is this where we're talking about this?

Okay Rehoboth is gays and lesbians (per my daughter at 13: "yay! SO gay!") plus families with kids. Dewey is 20somethings who drink beer. Bethany is families with kids. Ocean City is basically nonstop Spring Break.

I have a few thoughts about Cape May and northward, and Virginia Beach and southward, but I will hold those in reserve for now.

Steely Duran (Ye Mad Puffin), Wednesday, 2 August 2023 11:19 (nine months ago) link

I mean if we’re going to have this conversation, I submit that most beachy locales in the mid-Atlantic are kind of disgusting, and that good beaches only begin Virginia Beach and south and Connecticut and north.
